The popularity of the supply chain concept emanates because of quality management. Quality management practices in supply chain contribute to quality offerings, overall firm performance, cost reduction and ultimately for competitive advantage. The paper empirically and analytically investigates the relationship between total quality management and supply chain performance. The primary data for the study were collected from 44 managers of small manufacturing firms, 74 wholesalers and 120 retailers in district Udhampur of J&K State. The data after purification & validation through factor analysis were subjected to multivariate tools. The results of Chisquare test, hierarchal regression model and correlation matrix revealed positive association between total quality management & supply chain operational efficiency, overall supply chain performance as predictor of quality management and existence of direct relationship between TQM and supply chain performance. The study emphasized that proper implementation of TQM programs could play a major role in developing an integrated organisation through teamwork, cordial relationship, training & education, cultural change and customer focus across the supply chain.

The purpose for this research work is to evaluate the degree of total quality management (TQM) implementation in the Ethiopian plastic industry in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and its impact on operational performance. A quantitative approach has been used via a self-administrated questionnaire. A simple random sampling technique was used to collect primary data. Correlation and regression procedures were used to analyse the primary data. The result of investigation on the level of TQM practices indicated that case industry has an acceptable level of TQM implementation. In addition, based on the regression analysis, it is concluded that two out of five of the selected TQM practices (training and supplier quality management) are significantly correlated with operational performance of plastic industry. In this process supplier quality management was considered as the most important TQM factor in terms of impacting operational performance

Purpose – This study aims to assess the level of supply chain management practices (SCMP), total quality management practices (TQMP) and firm's supply performance (FSP) in the automotive industry in Thailand and investigate the differences across organizational characteristics on SCMP, TQMP and FSP. Design/methodology/approach – Based on an extensive literature review, the measurement instruments for SCMP, TQMP and FSP were developed and validated by experts, pilot test and various statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics were employed to examine the existences of SCMP, TQMP and FSP in the sample companies. MANOVA was applied to test the differences across company ownership, company size, tier in the supply chain and ISO/TS 16949 on SCMP, TQMP and FSP. Findings – The author found that the measurements of SCMP, TQMP and FSP are reliable and valid. The automotive companies in Thailand apply TQMP much more extensively than SCMP. Their SCMP still emphasize efficient flows of information and materials at operational level to minimize transaction cost. Overall, Japanese companies, large companies, first-tier suppliers and the companies with ISO/TS 16949 have more intensively applied SCMP and TQMP and achieved a higher level of FSP. Research limitations/implications – The distribution of paper-based questionnaires was a convenience sample. Although data from a sample of 211 companies were collected, only 19 percent of them provided more than one response. Future research should apply different random sampling methods and investigate the reasons for and ways to improve the low multiple-response rate. Practical implications – The findings are beneficial to the managers who want to improve SCMP, TQMP and FSP through organization management. Originality/value – This study is one of the first to assess the existence of SCMP and FSP and to study the differences across organizational characteristics on SCMP and FSP in the automotive industry in developing countries. The existence and differences across organizational characteristics on TQMP were also confirmed.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify the importance of integration of supply chain management practices with total quality management (TQM) practices to augment business performance. The objective of paper is to focus on the two important dimensions, namely, supply chain and TQM of an organization with special reference to the concepts: exploration and exploitation. Design/methodology/approach – In total, 20 variables have been identified (independent variables) which impact business performance (dependent variable). Variables have been extracted into four categories with a combination of two orientations, i.e., exploitation and exploration, with respect to quality management and supply chain practices. Findings – Configurationally four different combinations concerning supply chain and TQM were identified in which an enterprise can operate. This is supported with the four different case studies. Practical implications – This study leads to some interesting practical implications for practicing managers as it offers a framework in which the supply chain and TQM practices can be implemented with respect to an organizational structure (mechanistic or organic structure), environmental conditions (uncertain environment and rapidly changing product life cycle) and identification of customer orientations (whether customer is price sensitive or customer makes buying decision on account of trust or relation to the product). Originality/value – The concept of supply chain exploitation and supply chain exploration with different orientations of quality management is not studied comprehensively before. This paper provides a background for establishing a framework of strategies for supply chain and quality practices, with respect to the exploitation and exploration scenario.
