Background: Spotted pod borer, Maruca vitrata, cause greater damage by attacking flowers, pods in greengram plants. This study investigates the efficacy and economics of certain novel insecticides when sprayed against spotted pod borer in green gram. Methods: The experiment was conducted at Crop Research Center, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology, Meerut, during kharif 2019 in randomized block design with eight treatments (Emamectin benzoate, Spinosad, Chlorantroniliprole, Indoxacarb, Novaluron, Profenophos, Triazophos and control) and three replications on variety SML668. Observations were taken at three, seven and eleven days after the first and second spray and the data thus recorded were analyzed. Result: The insecticide Chlorantraniliprole 20SC @ 0.025 ml/ lit has shown the highest efficacy with low per cent pod damage (7.33) and maximum grain yield (8.61q/ ha) against M. vitrata from the first day of application followed by Spinosad 45SC @ 0.25 ml/ lit with pod damage of 10.67 per cent and grain yield of 5.08 q/ ha. The highest cost-benefit ratio was obtained in Emamectin benzoate treatment (1:8.54), followed by chlorantraniliprole (1: 6.76).

An examination was carried out to study in randomized block design with three replications at Crop Research Centre, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology, Meerut during rabi 2014-15, the evaluation of novel insecticides viz., imidadoprid, acephate, chlorpyriphos, fipronil, thiamethoxam, dimethoate, and pymetrozine, against L. erysimi revealed that all the treatments schedule proved better than control at all the time intervals after each spray. The thiamethoxam 25% WG @100 g/ha was found most effective treatment in reducing the aphids population followed by acephate 75 SP @ 500g/ha. The pymetrozine 50 WG @ 250 g/ha was recorded less effective. Among conventional insecticides imidadoprid 17.8 SL @ 150 ml/ha was found more effective than dimethoate 30% EC @ 1000 ml/ha and fipronil 5 SC @ 1000 ml/ha. The higher yield was obtained from thiamethoxam 25% WG @100 g/ha with (17.15 q/ha) whereas, highest cost benefit ratio is obtained from imidadoprid 17.8 SL @ 150 ml/ha with (1:9.54).

Microplot field trial was conducted from March to May 2017 to assess the efficacy of various biopesticides, pathogen, predator and parasitoid against M. vitrata on lablab (var. Co Gb 14). The experiments were carried out in a randomized block design (RBD) with nine treatments and three replications. Results revealed that spinosad 45% SC @ 75 ml ha-1 was significantly superior to all other treatments by recording a cumulative mean population reduction of 72.58 per cent. The next in the order of efficacy were emamectin benzoate 5% SG @ 200 ml ha-1 (65.16 %) > sequential application of emamectin benzoate (200 ml ha-1) + Bracon brevicornis (2000 adults ha-1 released after fortnight) (63.70%) > emamectin benzoate (100 ml ha-1) + B. brevicornis (1000 adults ha-1) @ half the dose each (62.06 %) > azadirachtin 0.03% @ 2.5 L ha-1 (39.33 %) > B. brevicornis @ 2000 adults ha-1(32.77 %) > Crude suspension of B. bassiana (Bb 112) @ 108 Spores ml-1 (25.95 %) > Xylocoris flavipes @ 40,000 adults ha-1 (20.22 %).

A field experiment on evaluation of biopesticides against gram pod borer (Helicoverpa armigera Hub.) on pigeon pea was carried out during kharif season of 2012-13. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. Gram pod borer is a major pest of pigeon pea in India. For the management of this pest seven biopesticides were tested along with control. Among the biopesticides, Beauveria bassiana @ 1 liter / ha (1x1012 spores/ml) was found to be most effective biopesticide as it recorded lowest larval population (6.68 larvae / 5plants). The highest larval population was recorded in control (12.61 larvae /5 plants). The least effective treatment was Paecilomyces fumosoreseus (9.31 larvae /5 plants). Similar trend was observed in the grain yield as 1667.55 kg/ha, 709.41kg/ha and 1025.21kg/ha , respectively.

Aims: To evaluate the efficacy of novel insecticides against the spotted pod borer on rice fallow blackgram. Study Design: Randomised Block Design (RBD) was used in this study. Place and Duration of Work: The present study was carried out at College farm Agricultural College, Naira during Rabi 2017-2018 season. Methodology: The spotted pod borer, Maruca vitrata (Geyer) is a serious pest of blackgram through out the growth period especially in flowering and pod development stages in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Management of this pest becomes difficult due to its concealed nature of feeding inside flowers and pods. Different newer insecticides were evaluated for the management of M. vitrata on blackgram cultivar LBG-752 under rice fallow situations with ten treatments replicated thrice. Results: The current study indicated that among all the insecticidal treatments chlorantraniliprole 9.3% + λ cyhalothrin 4.6% @ 0.5 ml l-1 was found to be very effective by recording 75.91 per cent overall mean reduction in M. vitrata larval population with lowest pod damage (7.04%) over control (60.58%) and also recorded highest grain yield (8.31 q ha-1) followed by chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC @ 0.0037% and flubendiamide @ 39.35 SC 0.00787% with 72.04 and 67.30 per cent overall reduction in mean larval population of M. vitrata over untreated control. The cost - benefit (C:B) ratio for all the treatments revealed that chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC @ 0.0037% was highly economical with a C : B of 1: 17.14 followed by spinosad 45 SC with cost - benefit (C:B) ratio 1: 15.28. Conclusion: Usage of newer insecticides with novel modes of action are highly effective against spotted pod borer with an additional increase in yield of blackgram.

Background: Pod fly, Melanagromyza obtusa is one of the most obnoxious pest causing grain damage ranging from 10-80% with a monitory loss of US$ 256 million annually. Being an internal feeder, infested pods do not show any external symptoms of damage until the fully grown maggots chew the pod wall, leaving a thin papery membrane intact called as window, through which adults exit from the pod. Several field studies were conducted to determine the efficacy of insecticides for the control of pod fly. However, these findings did not find acceptability and led to partial success. Insecticides that should leave lesser residues and pose lesser environmental threat have become imperative. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of certain new insecticide molecules against pod fly in pigeonpea ecosystem. Methods: Two field experiments were conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Lam, Guntur during Kharif, 2012 and 2013 in a randomized block design (RBD) using pigeonpea cv. ICPL 85063 (Lakshmi) with 17 treatments including untreated control and 3 replications. Two sprays were given at 10 days interval starting from pod initiation stage. At maturity, number of pods showing pod fly damage were recorded and expressed as percentage. Grain yield was recorded and cost–benefit ratio was worked out. Result: Among different insecticides, thiacloprid 21.7 SC, followed by diafenthiuron 50 WP, flubendiamide 480 SC and dimethoate 30 EC were very effective against pod fly with more grain yield and registered highest incremental cost benefit ratio (ICBR). It was further suggested that effective insecticides may be alternated in order to avoid development of resistance to pod fly in pigeonpea.

An experiment was conducted at Zonal Agricultural Research Station, V.C farm, Mandya (Karnataka), India during 2015, to assess the chemical control of sugarcane early shoot borer (Chilo infuscatellus). Nine insecticides namely, Fipronil 0.3G, Chlorantraniliprole 0.4G, Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC, Spinosad 45SC, Flubendiamide 39.35SC, Cartap hydrochloride 4G, Phorate 10G, Carbofuran 3G, Chlorpyriphos 20EC, and compared with untreated (Check plot)using randomized block design with three replications. Significant differences were noticed among the treatments. Chlorantraniliprole 0.4G recorded lowest cumulative incidence (2.79 %) and highest per cent reduction over the control (85.78 %) which was followed by Cartap hydrochloride 4G (5.37% and 72.65%), Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC (5.95% and 75.62%), Flubendiamide 39.35SC (6.64% and 66.19%) and Fipronil 0.3G (6.83% and 65.22%) were found significantly superior in reducing the cumulative incidence of C. infuscatellus.In Co 86032 Cartap hydrochloride 4G was found to be the best insecticide in getting a highest cost benefit ratio (1:12.39). Other insecticides such as Fipronil 0.3G (1:8.84), Chlorantraniliprole 0.4G (1:6.96), Flubendiamide 39.35SC (1:5.42) and Spinosad 45SC (1:4.16) have also recorded better cost benefit ratio. Since Cartap hydrochloride 4G does not have crop label so we can recommend Fipronil 0.3G or Chlorantraniliprole 0.4G for the management of sugarcane early shoot borer.

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata Walp.) is a major grain legume used as vegetables and pulses. Among the several insect pest of cowpea, spotted pod borer is one of the most destructive pest. To evaluate the available chemical pesticides for pod borer management, a set of field experiments on cowpea variety Malepatan-1 were conducted at Horticulture Research Station, Malepatan, Pokhara in years 2019 and 2020. The experiments were laid out in Completely Randomized Block Design (RCBD) having seven  treatments viz.Flubendiamide 39.35 % SC @ 0.3 mL/L, Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 % SC @ 0.2 mL/L, Emamectin benzoate 5 % SG @0.3 g/L, Spinosad 45 % SC @0.3 mL/L, Bacillus thuringiensis Kurstaki @2g/L, Azadirechtin 0.03%@ 5mL/L and Control with four replications. Flubendiamide 39.35 % SC @ 0.3 mL/L and Emamectin benzoate 5 % SG @0.3 g/L were found the most effective insecticides in lowering cowpea flower and pod damage with highest benefit cost ratio; however, considering environment, Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 % SC @ 0.2 mL/L and Spinosad 45 % SC @0.3 mL/L being next effective treatments could be viable option to manage spotted pod borer in cowpea production.

Field experiment was carried out during 2018 cropping season to evaluate the effect of planting dates on incidence of legume pod borer Maruca vitrata on cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) varieties. The treatments consist of five varieties of cowpea (local variety, SAMPEA 6, SAMPEA 7, SAMPEA 8 and SAMPEA 10) which were sown at three different dates, 7th (early), 24th (Mid) August and 7th (early) September, 2018. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) replicated three times. The number of M. vitrata larva on flowers, damaged pods and weight of grains were determined. The result showed that first sowing nearly August had less infestation by M. vitrata than those in mid August and differs significantly (P≤0.05) from those sown in September. All varieties sown in early and mid August had less M. vitrata infestation and produced higher grain yield of 533.33kg and 395.06 kg on SAMPEA 7 and SAMPEA 8, respectively compared to those sown in early September: 256.79 and 197.53 on SAMPEA 7 and SAMPEA 10, respectively. Local variety and SAMPEA 6 were the varieties with higher mean number of M. vitrata, higher pod damage and low grain yield. Therefore, SAMPEA 7 can be utilized in breeding program for the management of pod borer.

Aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch) is one of the serious pests of cowpea. Bioefficacy of four insecticides with different concentrations namely Jholmol (125 ml/L), Neemix (2 ml/L), Cannabis extract (100 g/L), Chlorpyrifos 50% EC and Cypermethrin 5% EC (2 ml/L) along with control were evaluated against aphid at Research Station of Agriculture and Forestry University, Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal in 2018. Five treatments; four different insecticides and control were laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The results indicated that all the insecticides were significant for aphid reduction. The effects were higher in Neemix followed by Jholmol and cannabis extract. The yield of cowpea was significantly highest (11.10 t/ha) with Neemix application, while lowest in control (7.58 t/ha). The highest net profit (NRs.61670) was obtained in Neemix followed by treatments of Jholmol (NRs.46175) and Cannabis extract (NRs.35815). The lowest incremental Cost/Benefit ratio was obtained in Neemix (1.341) and followed by treatments of, jholmol (1/1.12) and Cannabis extract (1/0.85), respectively. Thus, application of Neemix @ 2 ml/L could be used in cowpea to control aphid with high yield.

ABSTRACT: The experiment was conducted in randomized block design with 7 treatments and 4 replications, to evaluate the performance of some botanical products against the pest complex of brinjal.The treatments included Triazophos 40E.C. 0.04%,Neem oil 1 %,Achook 5 %,NSKE 5%, Karanj oil 1%,Eucalyptus oil 1% and an untreated control. Four spraying of each treatment were conducted starting 30 days after transplanting, at an interval of 15 days. Observation on shoot and fruit damage by Leucinodes orbonalis were recorded. The results revealed that Triazophos 40E.C. 0.04%,was significantely superior over all the botanical treatments shoot damage in different treatments & ranged between 3.9 to 10.1%.Highest healthy fruits yield (24.76q/ha) was recorded in the treatment of Triazophos 40E.C. 0.04% followed by the treatment of neem oil 1% (20.54 q/ha healthy fruits), and both the treatments were statistically at par Yields in remaining treatments were at par and ranged between 19.57 and 15.23 q/ha. Lowest yield (10.50 q/ha in healthy fruits) was registered in untreated control.Highest cost benefit ratio of 1:6. 31 was treatment of Triazophos 40 EC 0.04%. Application of neem oil 1% registered the cost benefit ratio of 1:1.79 and was found most economical.
