Aim: To present the report of a female patient, 10 years old, referred for treatment in the Dentistry Clinic of a Brazilian public university.Case report: The patient's oral health condition was unfavorable with biofilm accumulation, pain report and chewing difficulty. After anamnesis, clinical and radiographic examination, the treatment plan included removal of infectious foci (54, 55, 64, 65, 74, 75, 85, 16, 36 and 46) followed by prosthetic rehabilitation. At this stage, the functional restoration of the lower arch was restricted by the imminent eruption of the premolars. In the upper arch, the maintenance of the mesio-distal diameters aims to guarantee the chronological sequence of successors irruption and establishment of normal occlusion. During the monthly follow-up consultations the patient presents a more spontaneous smile, although she still needs constant reinforcement in oral hygiene habits.Conclusions: The rehabilitation of patients with loss of permanent teeth during the mixed dentition phase should consider the peculiarities of this period for the restoration of health without altering the normal pattern of occlusal development.

Objective. This case report presents 3-year follow-up of a case of nonsyndromic multiple supernumerary teeth (NSMST) with 11 supernumerary teeth, 2 of which showed subsequent formation.Case Report. A 10-year-old girl was referred to the dental clinic with the chief complaint of delayed eruption. Radiographic examination showed 9 retained supernumerary teeth. The treatment plan consisted of extraction of the supernumerary teeth and associated primary teeth in order to allow the permanent teeth to erupt. After 2 years of follow-up, 2 additional supernumerary teeth were observed.Conclusion. Regular follow-up for late forming supernumeraries is crucial for NSMST cases.

Immediate complete denture (ICD) is a mucosa-supported prosthesis manufactured before the removal of natural teeth and installed soon after their extraction. This paper aims to describe a clinical case of oral rehabilitation with upper ICD and lower removable partial denture (RPD). A 57-year-old female patient sought treatment with dissatisfaction with her aesthetics and mobility of the upper teeth. After anamnesis, intra and extra-oral examinations, radiographic examination and analysis of study models mounted on a semi-adjustable articulator, periodontal pockets were found in the upper teeth and extensive bone loss. So, upper tooth extraction, superior ICD and lower RPD were indicated as treatment. For ICD preparation, anatomical and functional moldings were made, made up of orientation and intermaxillary relationship plans for the assembly of the semi-djustable articulator models. The remaining upper teeth were removed from the model for assembly of the artificial teeth and the ICD was polymerized and polished. The lower RPD was made following the standard steps. After dentures manufacturing, the surgery for upper tooth extraction was performed and prostheses installed immediately after surgery. The results demonstrated that the performed treatment provided aesthetic, phonetic, and functional restoration to the patient avoiding her to undergo a period of edentulism. It was concluded that ICD is a good indication for prosthetic rehabilitation of patients with advanced periodontitis, whose planning is the exodontia of all the teeth of an arch.

Abstract Background. Supernumerary teeth are described as an excess of the normal teeth number of 20 deciduous and 32 permanent teeth and can occur in any dental region. Material and methods. The authors present the case of a 12-year-old female child with a paramolar in the maxilla, discovered accidentally during an orthopantomogram, emphasising the treatment modality and the complications that can appear. Conclusion. Supernumerary teeth can be present in any region of the oral cavity. Both practitioners and clinicians should be aware of the various types of paramolars and make a treatment plan after an accurate clinical and radiographic examination.

Hypodontia is characterized by partial or total congenital missing of one or more teeth, on one or both dentitions. Heredity is the main etiological factor and the principal clinical features are reduction on number, size and form of teeth, and late eruption. Removable partial prosthesis, fixed prosthesis, overdentures and adhesive prosthesis are alternative treatments, and the indication is type dependent. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical case of an eleven-year-old child with eight missing permanent teeth of idiopathic etiology.The patient had facial and skeletal symmetry, normal development and was not related to any syndrome. Clinical characteristics: permanent teeth with good periodontal conditions (16, 12, 11, 21, 22, 26, 36, 31, 42, 46), primary teeth (53, 63, 64, 73, 83); overbite and microdontia on teeth 12 and 22. The treatment plan was done initially by documenting of the case for teeth analysis (study casting models, periapicals and panoramic x-rays, and photographs), and followed by the exodontics of teeth 73 and 83.A removable appliance in autocured acrylic resin, using teeth in acrylic for maintenance of functional space and occlusion was planned and carried out.An anterior track for vertical dimension gain was used because of his accentuated overbite. The patient will be monitored until the end of the craniofacial growth, when it will be again evaluated and forwarded for the final oral rehabilitation. Hypodontia diagnosis and management should be performed as early as possible not to interfere with the craniofacial development of the child.

Objectives. To report the prevalence and distribution of nonsyndromic dental anomalies in children in eastern Saudi Arabia. Methods. This retrospective records review study involved radiographic examination of 6–18 years old pediatric patients who attended the Dental Hospital of the College of Dentistry, Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Four calibrated examiners recorded nonsyndromic dental anomalies from patients’ digital orthopantomograms (OPG). The anomalies recorded were related to tooth number, shape, and location. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and Fisher exact tests were used to report prevalence and differences by gender, nationality, and medical history at the 5% significance level. Results. Of 2226 reviewed patients’ records, 1897 met the inclusion criteria and were included in the study. The study sample had equal distribution of males (52.6%) and females (47.4%) and comprised 81.2% Saudi children with a mean age of 8.8 ± 1.84 years. Most study subjects (97.8%) were in mixed dentition and 88.7% were healthy. The prevalence of dental anomalies was as follows: teeth rotations (24.5%), ectopically erupted teeth (6%), congenitally missing permanent teeth (5.4%), peg lateral (1.1%), supernumerary (0.5%), gemination (0.3%), and fusion (0.1%). No statistically significant differences were found in the distribution of dental anomalies by patients’ gender, medical history, and nationality ( p value ≥0.05). Conclusion. This study showed that teeth rotations were the most common dental anomalies followed by ectopic eruptions and congenitally missing teeth. The study findings may guide dental practitioners to better diagnose and manage children with dental anomalies in eastern Saudi Arabia.

Traumatic dental injuries are common clinical problems during childhood, and may have complex etiologies causing physical and physiological impairment. The aim of this study was to report the management of a severe traumatic dental injury in an 8-year-old female patient, victim of a motorcycle accident, who was taken to a pediatric dentistry clinic three months after the accident. After clinical and radiografic examination, we observed the avulsion of the permanent maxillary central incisors and of the permanent left lateral incisor, with considerable lingual interposition, interfering in speech and swallowing. The patient showed low risk of caries and good behavior during the appointments. However, she demonstrated to be embarrassed to smile. Besides the preventive treatment concerning caries, the treatment plan included immediate care and subsequent monitoring of the psychosocial reestablishment. For this purpose, an acrylic partial denture was made in order to replace the missing anterior teeth, maintaining the characteristics of the mixed dentition and preserving the aesthetics and the function. Follow-up appointments were performed one, three and six months after the first visit, aiming to monitor the adaptation of the prosthesis, as well as the growth and development of the child’s dentition. Thus, the aesthetic and functional rehabilitation was achieved regarding the patient’s satisfaction, enabling immediate social reinsertion.

Odontogenic anomalies are frequently observed by pedodontists in their routine practice. Concomitant hypodontia and hyperdontia is a rare condition of unknown aetiology. CHH may occur in both the jaws and is more common in the permanent and mixed dentition. This article, describes a case of non-syndromic CHH in the mixed dentition. Genetic factors probably play an important etiological role in the co-occurrence of partial anodontia and supernumerary teeth. A 7 year old boy showed a conical mesiodens and missing right primary central incisor. Radiographic examination of the patient revealed presence of succedaneous permanent teeth. Introduction: A wind instrumentalist was diagnosed with a periapical lesion on tooth 21. The prosthetic rehabilitation options were considered with respect to the embouchure mechanism of the saxophonist. The underlying mechanism associated with the embouchure of the saxophone player was observed in this particular case in order to understand if asymmetrical forces were transmitted to the upper central incisors. Periapical lesions can be harmful to the oral health of musicians. The treatment options thus have to be taken into consideration with special focus on the need for oral rehabilitation on the anterior maxilla. Material and Methods: The patient underwent a radiographic examination with a panoramic X-ray. Subsequently, two piezoresistive sensors (FlexiForce™) were placed on the upper surface of the mouthpiece in order to quantify the pressure applied to the central incisors during the embouchure. In order to understand the values involved during this procedure, the saxophone player was required to play three different notes at different pitches: high, medium, and low. This procedure was repeated three times for each pitch in order to obtain a medium value for each note. Signal acquisition was obtained within software developed for this purpose, with the voltage output observed in LabView 2011®. Results: The panoramic X-ray showed a periapical lesion with the characteristics of a radicular cyst on tooth 21. The FlexiForce™ piezoresistive sensors allowed us to find that greater force (kg) was being applied to tooth 11 in comparison to tooth 21 during the embouchure mechanism. Conclusions: The sensors used in this research are acceptable for identifying the tooth where the greatest pressure is applied during the mouthpiece stabilization. In the case of executing an oral rehabilitation procedure for wind instrumentalists, a clinical examination can be complemented with the aid of bioengineering and the inherent development of sensor technology in order to better understand the embouchure mechanism. Likewise, the prosthetic rehabilitation should be taken into consideration in order to provide minimal changes to the musician’s performance.

In cariously exposed immature permanent teeth, the treatment choice is controversial in pediatric dentistry. Radical root canal treatment usually appears to be the solution for these teeth. Even partial pulpotomy is a vital treatment for traumatically exposed immature permanent teeth; extending the borders of indication towards cariously exposed immature permanent teeth with reversible pulpitis may abolish the necessity of pulpectomy. This article describes the partial pulpotomy of a cariously affected immature permanent teeth and the follow-up for 1 year. A healthy 11-year-old male patient was referred to Gazi University Faculty of Dentistry Department of Pediatric Dentistry. The patient had reversible pulpitis symptoms on teeth numbered 45. At radiographic examination, immature apex and deep caries lesion were observed and partial pulpotomy was performed by using calcium hydroxide to maintain vitality of the pulp and allow continued development of root dentin expecting the root will attain full maturity. Clinical and radiographic follow-up demonstrated a vital pulp besides not only closure of the apex (apexogenesis), but also physiologic root development (maturogenesis) after 1 year. Partial pulpotomy is an optional treatment for cariously exposed immature permanent teeth for preserving vitality and physiological root development.
