The mirror foot is a rare, congenital defect characterized by a mirror image of polydactyly. Due to a small number of cases and rarity of this condition, the definitions and classifications are incomplete. This report provides description of the treatment of patient hadeight fingers and eight metatarsal bones in his right foot with normal crus bones. A positive result of treatment was achieved with surgical treatment by removing the three middle fingers along with the metatarsal bones and bringing the first and fifth radii of the foot closer. One year after surgery, the appearance and function of the foot are normal, and the child is wearing standard footwear. There are no clear guidelines for treatment of mirror foot. In the case of proper tibia and fibula, resection of the excess radii of the foot is recommended, starting with the hypoplastic radii. Keywords: mirror foot, resection of foot radius, deformation classification

Introduction: Gingival recessions are mucogingival defects of multifactorial etiology that interfere with aesthetics and function; in many cases these defects require multidisciplinary treatment. Objective: To report a clinical case of gingival recession treatment using a periodontal and orthodontic approach. Case report: Patient a 20-year-old woman, sought the Extension Project of Clinical and Surgical Periodontics (PROEPECC/UFCG) complaining of developing gingival recession in tooth 31, which was poorly positioned in the arch after orthodontic movement. Periodontal examination revealed type 1 gingival recession associated with a prominent labial frenulum, with a gingival height of 3 mm, width of 2 mm, probing depth of 1 mm, and absence of attached gingiva. The root was covered using a subepithelial connective tissue graft removed from the palatal mucosa and coronally positioned flap; in addition, inferior labial frenectomy was performed. After 1 year and 6 months, tooth 31 was again moved to reposition it in the arch. One year and 10 months post-surgery, new periodontal examination was performed to evaluate the mucogingival characteristics of the treated area. The recession was completely covered and there was a 4-mm increase in the attached gingiva. Conclusion: Orthodontics may positively or negatively influence periodontal structures and periodontics may favor the prognosis of tooth movement in a risk area by modifying the periodontal phenotype, increasing its resistance to gingival recession.

A very rare case of a mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the external auditory canal in an 80-years-old man is presented. Two years ago the tumor of the left external auditory canal appeared, involving facial nerve. Metastatic lesions, composed of squamous cells only, appeared in the ipsilateral cervical lymph nodes. One year after surgical treatment the patient is alive and well.

In early diagnosed and causally treated cases of secondary glaucoma, it is possible to save the sight in a glaucomatous eye and to preserve the sight in a healthy eye. The most common causes of secondary glaucoma include anterior uveitis, in which diverse pathological processes can lead to an increase in IOP. In cases of treating glaucoma secondary to uveitis with annular posterior synechiae in connection with peripheral anterior synechiae, iridencleisis is the method of choice. This article presents the results of the eight-month treatment of such a case with iridencleisis combined with posterior sclerectomy. This method makes it possible to increase the area of aqueous humour outflow to the subconjunctival space. The treatment resulted in the reduction of IOP in the left eye from the preoperative value of 72 mmHg to 15 mmHg, which was maintained at a constant level during the eight-month period following the surgery. Sight assessment in the operated eye, carried out on the basis of PLR, menace and dazzle response, brought a moderately positive result.

A ganglion is a cystic swelling that occurs most commonly in women. Recurrence is possible after conservative or surgical treatment. A novel method of therapy, electroacupuncture stimulation, was performed in a 53 year old woman with a large, recurrent dorsal wrist ganglion. After treatment it rapidly disappeared and there was no recurrence during the one year follow-up period. Although the mechanism is obscure, it is our impression that electroacupuncture may have a local action on such cysts in addition to needle drainage.

With increase use of tissue-integrated prostheses in recent years it is a goal to understand what is happening at the interface between haversion bone and bulk metal. This study uses electron microscopy (EM) techniques to establish parameters for osseointegration (structure and function between bone and nonload-carrying implants) in an animal model. In the past the interface has been evaluated extensively with light microscopy methods. Today researchers are using the EM for ultrastructural studies of the bone tissue and implant responses to an in vivo environment. Under general anesthesia nine adult mongrel dogs received three Brånemark (Nobelpharma) 3.75 × 7 mm titanium implants surgical placed in their left zygomatic arch. After a one year healing period the animals were injected with a routine bone marker (oxytetracycline), euthanized and perfused via aortic cannulation with 3% glutaraldehyde in 0.1M cacodylate buffer pH 7.2. Implants were retrieved en bloc, harvest radiographs made (Fig. 1), and routinely embedded in plastic. Tissue and implants were cut into 300 micron thick wafers, longitudinally to the implant with an Isomet saw and diamond wafering blade [Beuhler] until the center of the implant was reached.

Cavernous hemangiomas are benign tumours of mesodermal origin. Even though various localizations of hemangioma have been described in the literature, its occurrence in the greater omentum is very rare. Only symptomatic hemangiomas are indicated for surgical treatment. There are case reports presenting resection or surgical removal of the greater omentum with hemangioma because of mechanical syndrome, consumption coagulopathy, bleeding, infection or suspicion of a malignancy. This article presents a case report of a patient operated on for a suspicion of carcinomatosis of the greater omentum. Histological examination found hemangiomatosis in the resected greater omentum.

Pelvic injuries account for 16 to 25% of all skeletal trauma in small pets. Small dogs as companion dogs are now widespread. Unusual exterior and behavioral features have made them popular and at the same time vulnerable in the modern urban environment. The author defined the nature of injuries and adapted technique of transosseous osteosynthesis for the treatment of toy-breed dogs with pelvic trauma. The study of the X-rays in 226 dogs with pelvic injuries demonstrated that toy-breed dogs accounted for 16% of the total. Multiple pelvic trauma was revealed in 95% of them. Surgical treatment was performed in 24 dogs, conservative one - in 13, that amounted to 65% and 35%, respectively. Surgical treatment consisted in open juxtaposing of fragments and focal transosseous and/or internal osteosynthesis with subsequent external fixation using devices of various designs. The external structures were of three types: half-ring support or U-shaped staple, pair of parallel curved plates connected by two threaded rods with each other, and pair of curved plates located bilaterally on both sides of the pelvis and connected by two threaded rods with the help of threaded ends. The terms of fixation for pelvic injuries in toy-breed dogs at the age under one year were 42 days on the average, and in the dogs at the age above one year - 60 days. Surgical treatment in toy-breed dogs with pelvic injuries was performed more often in comparison with conservative one. Pelvic trauma was accompanied by pronounced pain shock. The osteosynthesis techniques used in toy-breed dogs are little traumatic and not limiting functions thereby contributing to recovery of all the structures of pelvis and pelvic limbs.
