This report gives an overview about certain aspects of modern reproductive medicine. The following issues are prioritised: development of medical facilities, people’s knowledge on reproductive medicine, appraisal of chances and risks, psychological aspects of involuntary childlessness, stresses and strains during IVFtreatment, ethical consequences of these medical procedures. Furthermore interactions between demographic and medical developments are analysed as well as resulting psychological and sociological perspectives. Previous research results present both a lack of knowledge towards reproductive medical treatments and disproportionate expectations and hope toward treatment-outcome. Very often expensive and complex methods are practiced to fulfil the child wish, but mental and social aspects remain unconsidered. So the motto “a child at any cost” on the part of many involuntary childless couples as well as of some fertility doctors poses a glaring contradiction to insufficient counselling in practice prior to, during and after the treatment.

New contributions to the development of health care give a different look to the place of the patient. It appears that the outcome of medical treatments may depend of the specific medical and physiological condition of the patient and even other kind of conditions outside the patient may contribute to the results of the whole of medical treatment. New entities as effectiveness, participation of the patient, ethics, technics, digitization, multidisciplinary approach of research and consultation, deliver a total different look to the way as to how health care has to be secured. New specializations in medical law, medical management, tend to be developed day by day. New specializations of medicine will bring more effectiveness in using medical procedures. For example, translational medicine tends to find the best effective way of setting up new treatments, new scientific investigations. The introduction of personalized, predictive and preventive medicine, the translational medicine and precision medicine will enhance the implementation of scientific findings. Every contribution in this development has to consider the effect to the result in the health care system. The importance of the condition of the patient remains always the leading motive.

The purpose of this project was to identify unique vocabulary associated with specific medical procedures. Personnel from six medical facilities with acute care or long-term acute care hospital (LTACH) units participated by proposing vocabulary/messages associated with procedures in which they routinely participated. Speech-language pathologists, respiratory therapists, physicians, nurses, chaplains, and nursing aids participated in the project. The unique vocabulary associated with common medical procedures is available in this article and on our augmentative and alternative communication–related website, http://aac.unl.edu .
