This study aimed to determine the effect of ethanol extract of gemitir flower (Tagetes erecta L.) on total cholesterol levels, Low-Density Lipoprotein C (LDL), Malondialdehyde (MDA), Apolipoprotein B (ApoB). Forty-eight Rattus norvegicus were randomly divided into 6 groups, groups were given standard feed (K-) and 5 groups of hyperlipidemia models (K +, P1, P2, P3, P4) were given High Fat Diet (HFD) for 35 days. On the 36th day, the total cholesterol levels were checked through the tail of Rattus norvegicus, and from day 37 to day 50 were given a normal diet (K-), HFD (K +), simvastatin 10 mg/kgBW (P1), ethanol extract of gemitir flowers (Tagetes erecta L.) 200 (P2), 400 BW (P3), and 800 mg/kgBW (P4). On day 51, the total cholesterol, LDL-C, MDA, and ApoB blood serum levels were checked. The results showed total cholesterol, Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL), Malondialdehyde (MDA), and Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) given ethanol extract of gemitir flowers 200 and 400 mg/kgBW (P2) had a significant reduction (P < 0.05). Giving ethanol extract of gemitir flower (Tagetes erecta L.) could reduce levels of total cholesterol, LDL, MDA, and Apo B.

Introduction: Accumulating evidence suggests that apolipoprotein B (apoB) is superior to low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in prediction of cardiovascular events. Yet, an important outstanding question is whether apoB, relative to LDL, is an enhanced marker for subclinical atherosclerosis, particularly in diabetics where LDL levels may underestimate atherogenic lipid burden due to increased proportion of small, dense LDL. Hypothesis: We hypothesized that plasma apoB would be a better predictor than LDL-C of coronary artery calcification (CAC) scores in type 2 diabetics and non-type 2 diabetics. Methods: We performed cross-sectional analyses of asymptomatic Caucasians in (1) The Study of Inherited Risk of Coronary Atherosclerosis (434 men and 383 women; median age 48, non-diabetics) and (2) The Penn Diabetes Heart Study (580 men and 261 women; median age 60, type 2 diabetics). Results: Levels of apoB and LDL-C were correlated in diabetics (r=0.78, p<0.001) and non-diabetics (r=0.77, p<0.001). There was no association between LDL-C and CAC in diabetics. In non-diabetics, an association of LDL-C was lost after adjustment for total cholesterol. In contrast, after controlling for age, gender, statin therapy, and total cholesterol, levels of apoB were positively associated with CAC in diabetics [tobit regression ratio for 30 mg/dl increase in apoB 2.94 (95% CI 1.62 – 5.53), p=0.001) and had a more modest association with CAC in non-diabetics [1.67 (95% CI 1.16 – 2.32), p=0.005]. Conclusions: ApoB, but not LDL-C, predicted CAC scores, a measure of coronary atherosclerotic burden. The strength of this association was greater in diabetics than non-diabetics. Relative to LDL-C, plasma apoB levels may be particularly useful in assessing CVD risk in type 2 diabetes.

Tea Benalu (Scurrula atropurpurea [Bl.] Dans.) and Mango Benalu (Dendrophthoe pentandra L. miq.) containssecondary metabolites with potential antioxidant potential. Antioxidants can inhibit the oxidation process and reduce Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and increase High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL). The safety of the preparations for the combination of parasites of tea and mango leaves was tested to obtain toxic effects after repeated treatment tests over some time. The purpose of this study was to determine the toxic effects of a combination of methanolic extracts of a combination of tea parasites and mangoes in female rats (Rattus norvegicus) subchronically for 28 days by looking at the results of the clinical biochemical examination on lipid profiles, namely total cholesterol levels, triglycerides, high-density lipoproteins (28%). HDL), and Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL). The method of this study was experimental with a combination dose of methanol extract of tea parasite leaves and mango parasite leaves at a dose of 250 mg / KgBB, 500 mg / KgBB and 1000 mg / KgBB with 5x replications each treatment. The subjects used white rats (Rattus norvegicus) female Wistar strains aged 6-8 weeks with a minimum body weight of 100 grams. The treatment in this study was in the form of each dose given 5 times a week for 28 days (subchronic toxicity test) orally. Lipid profile levels were analyzed using the one-way ANOVA test. The results showed that the level of control blood lipid profile with a treatment dose of 250 mg / KgBW, 500 mg / KgBW, and 1000 mg / KgBW was not significantly different. The toxicity test of combined extracts of tea leaves and mango parasite leaves of female rat Rattus novergicus on subchronic exposure 28 days with those doses showed no difference tangible between treatments of controls. Subjek menggunakan tikus putih (Rattus norvegicus) betina strain wistar yang berumur 6-8 minggu dengan berat badan minimal 100 gram. Perlakuan dalam penelitian ini berupa setiap dosis  diberikan 5 kali seminggu selama 28 hari (uji toksisitas subkronik) secara per-oral. Kadar profil lipid dianalisis menggunakan uji One-way ANOVA. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kadar profil lipid darah kontrol dengan perlakuan dosis 250 mg/KgBB, 500 mg/KgBB dan 1000 mg/KgBB tidak berbeda nyata. Uji”toksisitas”ekstrak kombinasi daun benalu teh dan daun benalu mangga  tikus betina Rattus novergicus pada paparan subkronik 28 hari dengan”dosis”tersebut menunjukkan hasil tidak”beda”nyata antara perlakuan terhadap”kontrol. ”Hal ini berarti aman dan tidak menimbulkan sifat toksik pada profil lipid tikus wistar betina.Kata Kunci : Profil Lipid, Scurrula atropurpurea, Dendophthoe pentandra, Subkronik, Rattus norvegicus

Abstract Background: The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that in the liver, excessive fat accumulation impairs cholesterol metabolism mainly by altering the low-density lipoprotein-receptor (LDL-R) pathway. Method: Young male Wistar rats were fed standard (SD), high fat (HFD; 60% kcal) or Western (WD; 40% fat + 35% sucrose (17.5% fructose)) diets for 2 or 6 weeks. Results: Weight gain (~ 40g) was observed only following 6 weeks of the obesogenic diets (P < 0.01). Compared to the 2-week treatment, obesogenic diets tripled fat pad weight (~ 20 vs 7 g) after 6 weeks. Hepatic triglyceride (TG) levels were greater in response to both the WD and HFD compared to the SD (P < 0.01) at 2 and 6 weeks and their concentrations were greater (P < 0.05) in WD than HFD at 2 weeks. Plasma total cholesterol levels were higher (P < 0.05) in animals submitted to WD. After 2 and 6 weeks, liver expression of LDL-R, proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSKk9) and sterol regulatory element binding protein 2 (SREBP2), involved in LDL-cholesterol uptake, was lower in animals submitted to WD than in others treated with HFD or SD (P < 0.01). Similarly, low-density lipoprotein-receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1) and acyl-CoA cholesterol acyltransferase-2 (ACAT-2) mRNA levels were lower (P < 0.01) among WD compared to SD-fed rats. Expression of the gene coding the main regulator of endogenous cholesterol synthesis, 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCoAR) was reduced in response to WD compared to SD and HFD at 2 (P < 0.001) and 6 (P < 0.05) weeks. Being enriched in fructose, the WD strongly promoted the expression of carbohydrate-response element binding protein (ChREBP) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), two key regulators of de novo lipogenesis. Conclusion: These results show that the WD promptly increased TG levels in the liver by potentiating fat storage. This impaired the pathway of hepatic cholesterol uptake via the LDL-R axis, promoting a rapid increase in plasma total cholesterol levels. These results indicate that liver fat content is a factor involved in the regulation of plasma cholesterol.

In this meta-analysis it was demonstrated that, when compared with nonsmokers of similar age, smokers in the 8- to 19-year-old age group have significantly higher serum levels of triglyceride (+11.8%), very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL)-cholesterol (+12.4%) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (+4.1%) and significantly lower serum levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (-8.5%) and total cholesterol (-3.7%). All of these smoking-associated changes are in the same direction as those found in adults, with the exception of total cholesterol levels, which are significantly increased in adult smokers. The extent to which mean triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, and HDL-choles-terol levels are shifted is significantly greater in the 8-to 19-year-old smokers than in adult smokers. The changes in mean total cholesterol levels among smokers in both age groups represent only the net shifts in the lipoprotein fractions and are therefore likely to be a less sensitive indicator of the possible lipid-related excess coronary artery disease risk in smokers.

1. Changes in serum total and lipoprotein fraction triglyceride and cholesterol levels were studied in 24 adults on home haemodialysis. Half the patients were randomly allocated to a low cholesterol (mean 200 mg/day), fat-modified diet (mean polyunsaturated/saturated fat ratio of 1.0 with a mean of 43% of the total energy content derived from fat). 2. Before dietary manipulation, triglyceride levels in all lipoprotein fractions were significantly higher (P < 0.02) than in a control group of age and sex matched normal subjects. Total cholesterol, very-low-density-lipoprotein (VLDL) and low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol were also significantly raised (P < 0.02), but high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol was normal. In the patients on a fat-modified diet triglyceride levels did not alter in any of the lipoprotein fractions. Total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels fell significantly into the normal range (P < 0.002 and < 0.001 respectively) but VLDL and HDL cholesterol levels did not change. 3. Hypertriglyceridaemia is the most common lipid abnormality in patients with renal failure and a long-term fat-modified diet is, therefore, of limited therapeutic importance in these patients unless there is a low HDL/LDL cholesterol ratio.

The effectiveness of Bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum) to decrease blood total cholesterol level among elderly with HypercholesterolemiaBackground: Total cholesterol levels will gradually increase with age. In the elderly, uncontrolled cholesterol will be a risk factor for life-threatening diseases such as stroke and cardiovascular disease. Observing the adverse effects of hypercholesterolemia, appropriate intervention needed. The treatment of Hypercholesterolemia by using complementary herbal therapy as bay leaves. Bay leaves also contain quercetin, which is a flavonoid that plays a role in strong antioxidants because it can prevent oxidation of LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein). Flavonoids can also prevent fat deposition on the walls of blood vessels.Purpose : To determine the effect of bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum)  on reducing the cholesterol levels among elderly with Hypercholesterolemia, Method: A quasi-experimental One Group pretest-posttest design without control. The sampling taken by purposive sampling. The number of samples of this study were 29 participants.The cholesterol levels measured using a GCU (Glucose Cholesterol Urid acid), which was calibrated and had good accuracy. The statistical test used is the Paired sample t-test. As for the making of a concoction of bay leaves at each dose of administration by; as much as 10 bay leaves boiled with 400ml of water until the remaining 200ml. 400 ml per day provide in morning and evening and the therapy takes out for 1 full a month and ends with a blood examination evaluation with GCU.Results : The analysis showing that there was a significant difference in the mean cholesterol levels before and after being given the bay leaf stew with a p value of 0.001, which means that there was an effect of the provision of bay leaf boiled water on reducing cholesterol levels.Conclusion: The bay leaf is a complementary herbal therapy that is cheap and can find everywhere in Indonesia also is a non-invasive treatment. Mencermati dampak buruk dari hiperkolesterolemia maka diperlukan intervensi yang tepat. Mengatasi hiperkolesterolemia dapat dilakukan dengan pengunaan terapi komplementer herbal berupa pemberian air rebusan daun salam. Daun salam juga mengandung quercetin, yaitu Flavonoid yang berperan dalam antioksidan kuat karena mampu mencegah oksidasi LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein). Flavonoid juga dapat mencegah pengendapan lemak pada dinding pembuluh darah.Tujuan : Mengetahui pengaruh pemberian air rebusan dalam salam terhadap penurunan kadar kolesterol lanisa yang mengalami Hipercholesterolemia.Metode : Penelitian  quasy eksperimental dan menggunakan rancangan One Group pretest-posttest design without Control. Teknik pengambilan sampel dilakukan dengan secara purposive sampling. Jumlah sampel penelitiannya 29 partisipan. Kadar kolesterol pada partisipan diukur dengan menggunakan alat cek kolesterol GCU (Glukosa Colesterol Urid acid) yang sudah dikalibrasi dan memiliki akurasi yang baik. Uji statistic yang digunakan yakni uji Paired sample t-test. Adapun pembuatan ramuan daun salam pada setiap dosis pemberian dengan cara; rebus sebanyak 10 lembar daun salam dengan 400ml air hingga tersisa 200ml.400 ml per hari berikan pagi dan sore dan terapi berlangsung selama 1 bulan penuh dan diakhiri dengan evaluasi pemeriksaan darah dengan GCU.Hasil : Menunjukan bahwa ada perbedaan rerata kadar kolesterol yang bermakna sebelum dan sesudah diberikan rebusan daun salam dengan nilai p value 0,001 yang berarti ada pengaruh pemberian air rebusan daun salam terhadap penurunan kadar kolesterol.Simpulan: Pemberian rebusan air daun salam merupakan terapi komplementer herbal yang murah, mudah, dapat dilakukan dimanapun dan kapanpun dan merupakan tindakan non-invasif. Intervensi ini diharapkan dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai metode terapi non farmakalogi dalam mengatasi hiperkolesterolemia pada lansia.

The use of serum total cholesterol measurement was evaluated as a screening tool to predict elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in 2857 children and adolescents, aged 5 to 17 years, examined in 1981 and 1982. Subjects were from the biracial community of Bogalusa, Louisiana. For selected serum total cholesterol values (150 to 210 mg/dL, 3.88 to 5.43 mmol/L), sensitivities were higher for blacks than whites and higher for females than males, whereas the positive predictive values were higher for whites than blacks and higher for males than females. With the age-, race-, and sex-specific 95th percentiles of serum total cholesterol levels as cutoff points, only 44% to 50% of subjects with elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (≥95th percentile) were detected, and approximately 50% of those identified had false-positive results. Lowering the serum total cholesterol cutoff point increased the sensitivity, but decreased the specificity and positive predictive value. At the 75th percentiles of serum total cholesterol levels, sensitivities were 92% to 95% for females and 100% for males and specificities were 78% to 79%, but the false-positive results increased to 81% to 84%. The low cost and ease of obtaining serum total cholesterol measurements contribute to its appeal as a screening tool for hyperlipidemia. However, its poor test characteristics make serum total cholesterol measurement inefficient as a screening tool for detecting elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in children and adolescents.
