The author analyzes the new concept of “truly modern libraries” being developed by Vadim Stepanov who suggests to review the library functions and to re-orient the libraries toward providing socio-cultural and leisure services. The author analyzes these methodological and practical recommendations within the concept while demonstrating the practical “misery” of the concept itself and the recommendations which, to one degree or another, have been being developed in the national library studies. Thus, the open access to library collections is a common place since 1930s; every large library has got special room for public events, etc. The author discusses the experience of Helsinki city library (“Oodi”) that has switched to sociocultural and leisure services. Today, “Oodi” – is a cultural and entertaining center, comprising the library oriented toward leisure activities; in fact, it franchises the title of a library. The author demonstrates that accommodating libraries within cultural, leisure and entertaining complexes has been the common practice since the Soviet period. He emphasizes that changes in the national librarianship are of the multifactor character, while automation and computerization of library processes and online access lead to decreasing the library staff number and the volume of library collections. Thus, these changes may not be regarded as the manifestation of a crisis. The author suggests the projects must be being developed more responsibly.

Introduction. The “Shestvia (Procession) Journal” is one of the most common monuments of the historical narrative of the Peter the Great era. This monument has been published many times, but still does not have a scientific publication, and its handwritten tradition has practically not been studied. Methods and materials. This work examines the manuscripts of the “Shestvia Journal” in the funds of the Department of Manuscripts of the National Library of Russia. Analysis. The study of the literary “convoy” of historical collections about Peter the Great makes it possible to establish that the “Shestvia Journal” was assigned a strictly defined place in the narrative about the initial period of the reign of Peter the Great: in 42 collections it was directly connected with the texts of the “Notes” by A.A. Matveev, and only in eight lists had a separate existence. Results. Observations on the manuscripts of the “Shestvia Journal” held in the collections of the Manuscripts Department of the National Library of Russia allow us to hypothesize that the journal was created not as an independent work, but as part of a cycle of texts devoted to the early history of the reign of Peter the Great. This cycle, along with the magazine, included “The Legend of the Conception and Birth of... Emperor Peter the Great”, as well as the work of Count AA. Matveev on the rifle riots of 1682 and 1698.

Most art libraries in Poland are in fact sections of libraries of more general scope. In the case of the National Library of Warsaw, although material on Polish art is represented in the collections there is no art section as such. Other art library collections include the library of the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy, the ‘Cabinets of Illustrations’ within other libraries attached to the Polish Academy in various cities, departmental libraries in universities and technical universities, and libraries of museums and of learned and professional societies. Public libraries disseminate information on the arts and often organise arts activities; the Art Section of the Warsaw Public Library is among the most important art library collections in the country. Although public libraries join in cooperative arts ventures, art libraries in Poland have not yet begun to work together, and so far there is no professional organisation especially for art librarians.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the role of documentary editions in supporting the development of historical collections in libraries, their function as evidential and informational objects and considerations for their evaluation in collection development. Framed as objects possessing bibliographic and archival characteristics, attention is given to the evaluative challenges these objects present during collection development. Design/methodology/approach This paper provides an archival and bibliographic analysis of documentary editions through examining and discussing their archival and bibliographic elements. Consideration is given to how these elements are expressed as information and evidence, how they operate as scholarly and archive-like objects and how they acquire value as collected objects. This approach clarifies the informational and evidential characteristics of these works, offering a framework for their evaluation in libraries. Findings Documentary editions possess archival and bibliographic characteristics, requiring that evaluators critique the scholarly value and archival integrity of their content. This has implications for the curation of archival objects in library collections, where library and archival expertise can support a more nuanced assessment of these works. Originality/value The blurred documentary character of these works has been identified by scholars (Cox, 1991). This paper presents evaluative considerations. Here, these characteristics are clarified, and an approach for evaluating these works is offered.
