The ability of melatonin to regulate number of physiological and biochemical processes under different environmental stresses has been widely studied in plants. So, this investigation was done to study the protective roles of melatonin on Cicer arietinum L. grown under arsenic stress. Subjecting Cicer arietinum L. seeds to arsenic stress caused significant decreases in germination percentage, radicle growth, biomass accumulation, protein content and activities of antioxidant enzymes. On the other hand, melatonin treatment significantly increased growth parameters and protein quantity via improving antioxidant enzyme systems as compared with their corresponding untreated controls.

The flavonols kaempferol, quercetin and isorhamnetin were labelled with 14C by keeping seven day old Cicer arietinum L. plants in an atmosphere of 14CO2 for five days. The purified (U-14C) flavonols were applied to cell suspension cultures of Cicer arietinum L., Phaseolus aureus Roxb., Glycine max and Petroselinum hortense. Based on the rates of 14CO2 formation and distribution of radioactivity after fractionation of the cells, the flavonols were shown to be catabolized to a very high extent. All four cell suspension cultures possess the enzymatic activity transforming flavonols to the recently discovered 2,3-dihydroxyflavanones. Upon incubation of the flavonols datiscetin and kaempferol with enzyme preparations from Cicer arietinum L. cell suspension cultures, it was demonstrated that the enzymatically formed 2,3-dihydroxyflavanones are further transformed in an enzyme catalyzed reaction. Salicylic acid was found as a degradation fragment of ring B of the 2,3,5,7,2′-pentahydroxyflavanone derived from datiscetin. Neither phloroglucinol nor phloroglucinol carboxylic acid were observed as metabolites of ring A. These in vitro findings were further substantiated by in vivo data because the flavonols kaempferol, quercetin and datiscetin when applied to cell suspension cultures of Cicer arietinum L. and Glycine max gave rise to para-hydroxybenzoic acid, protocatechuic acid and salicylic acid, respectively. It was thus concluded that flavonols are catabolized via 2,3-dihydroxyflavanones with the B-ring liberated as the respective benzoic acid. The data are discussed in connection with earlier findings on the catabolism of chalcones, cinnamic and benzoic acids.

Since rainfall generally exceeds 500 mm during the winter months and soil erosion is a problem in the southern U.S.A., a cover crop is essential to reduce soil losses. Continuous cultivation of a crop on the same land also provides the opportunity for pest problems to develop. A winter rapeseed (Brassica napus L.)-grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L). Moench.) double-cropping system was investigated in the field from 1981 to 1984. Conventional tillage (CT) and no-till (NT) systems were used for both crops. Gullivar rape was planted in October and harvested in June. Winter rapeseed yields averaged 2.87 t ha−1 on CT plots in 1982. Averaged over 1983 and 1984, rape yields were 1.66 and 0.73 t ha−1 on CT and NT plots, respectively. However, the seeding method biased the rapeseed performance. Problems were encountered with winter weed control and pod shattering in the winter rape plots. Two sorghum hybrids, R. C. Young Oro Txtra and Funks G-550, were planted in June and harvested in October. Grain yields were not significantly different between hybrids (Oro 5.69 t ha−1, Funk 5.67 t ha−1) or between tillage systems (CT 5.59 t ha−1, NT 5.78 t ha−1). Grain yield differences were noted for year × hybrid × tillage interactions. Rape was a weed problem in the sorghum plots. The winter rape-sorghum double-cropping system offers an alternative to current winter small grains-sorghum/soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) or winter annual legume-sorghum/soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) systems; however, markets for the winter rapeseed and production economic analyses are needed prior to adoption of the system. Additional winter rapeseed research is needed to evaluate yields properly under NT conditions.Key words: Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, Brassica napus L., conservation tillage, multiple cropping, sorghum, rapeseed

NUNES, M. The work was developed in Bossoroca city, RS, in an experimental area of 31.17 ha, subdivided into seven sectors of approximately 4.45 ha. In each sectors, 25 plants were collected, being measured growth parameters and developing of plants in fortnightly periods followed by determination of component production at harvest. The irrigation management was carried out with the irrigation schedule stipulated by Irrigameter instrument, with same sheet of water in all sectors. Points georeferenced area were visualized using ArcGIS 9.3 software, where maps production were generated. Average production of different sectors were subjected to analysis of variance and Tukey test at 5% probability. It was concluded that there was variation in production across sectors, where sector 03 had the highest production with 6713.25 kg ha-1 and the sector with the smallest 05 5248.05 kg ha-1. Keywords: Glycine max, L.; water management; production components.
