Efficient use of agricultural wastes and by-products, basically transforming waste materials into value added products, is considered as pivotal for an effective bioeconomy strategy for the rural development. To this scope, citrus waste management represents a major issue for citrus processors but, at the same time, it embodies a potentially unexploited resource for the rural sustainable development. This study focuses on analyzing the current management of citrus waste in South Italy and identifying the determinants and barriers that may affect an entrepreneur’s choice on the destination of citrus waste. Citrus processors’ preferences about the contract characteristics needed to take part in a co-investment scheme have been investigated. Both analyses are preliminary steps to design an innovative and sustainable citrus by-product supply chain. Results show that the distance between the citrus processors and the citrus by-products plant is one of the main criteria for choosing alternative valorization pathways. Moreover, the required guaranteed capital, the short duration of the contract, and low risk are contract scheme characteristics that improve entrepreneurs’ willingness to co-invest in the development of a citrus waste multifunctional plant.

The world fisheries resources have exceeded 160 million tons in recent years. However, every year a considerable amount of total catch is discarded as by-catch or as processing leftovers, and that includes trimmings, fins, frames, heads, skin, viscera and among others. In addition, a large quantity of processing by-products is accumulated as shells of crustaceans and shellfish from marine bioprocessing plants. Recognition of the limited marine resources and the increasing environmental pollution has emphasized the need for better utilization of the by-products. Marine by-products contain valuable protein and lipid fractions, minerals, enzymes as well as many other components. The major fraction of by-products are used for feed production—in making fish meal/oil, but this has low profitability. However, there are many ways in which the fish and shellfish waste could be better utilized, including the production of novel food ingredients, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, biomedical materials, fine chemicals, and other value-added products. In recent times, much research is conducted in order to explore the possible uses of different by-products. This contribution primarily covers the characteristics and utilization of the main ingredients such as protein, lipid, chitin and its derivatives, enzymes, carotenoids, and minerals originating from marine by-products.

Waste management is a pervasive problem in today’s world and is rising continuously with rise in urbanization. For ecologically sustainable development, waste management is a vital requirement in many countries. It is very essential to sort the waste at base level so that there can be proper disposal of waste at the dumping sites. Sorting of waste requires more manpower and consumes more time too. Waste can be sorted and managed in numerous types of techniques. Analysing and classifying the garbage using image processing can be a very productive way to process waste materials. These papers talk about the traditional methods in which waste disposals are taking place. These also talk about the drawbacks faced by the already existing systems and ways to overcome it.

Due to the impact of globalization, the competition between enterprises has become fierce and led the supply chains of many industries to be reorganized. One of the consequences is that the operation of many small and medium enterprises (SMs) had become very difficult. Hence, many of SMEs in Taiwan have gone bankrupt and some of them have moved to other places where they have lower production costs, in order to survive; this not only hollowed out the industries but also disconnected the supply chains in their mother countries. Because Taiwan’s SMEs are generally poor in innovation, this study explored the implementation of the theory of inventive problem-solving (TRIZ) with alignment of new product development (NPD) and supply chain management (SCM) to strengthen the innovation and productivity of new products, so that SMEs can refer to its use to aid sustainable business operation. We considered an SME in Taiwan as a case to study and investigate the strategies that it employed to achieve survival and sustainability. By examining the practical applications of the NPD of the case company, which was based on the TRIZ and NPD SCM alignment, we found that value-added products may be created despite unfavorable industry environments, by implementing and coordinating the TRIZ and three product-related variables, namely innovating, modularity, and variety. This study explored practical alternatives for SMEs to develop various value-added products that meet customers’ changing requirements and succeed in competitive markets to achieve a sustainable business operation. Considering SMEs are crucially important to the economic equality and development of countries and that SMEs may only survive for a short time when operating in changing supply chain environments, this study can be used as a reference for the management of SMEs and future academic research in related fields.

Waste are the product, left behind, of the mines activity in Poland. Having in mind, that this kind activity is conducted on a large scale, because coal is still the main source for polish energetic sector, it generates a large amount of waste. Which needed be to treated appropriately. This waste management (waste from mines) is a major line of the enterprise, presented in this article. Like any other, in this company there are processes that altogether create a supply chain. However, due to the type of waste and taking account the present business condition, enterprise has implemented, recently, the elements into the logistics processes, which are consistent with sustainable development conception. These elements will be described in this article together with the effects of its use in economic, environmental and social aspects
