This paper details the evolution of access network sharing models from legacy DSL to the most recent fibre-based technology and the main challenges faced from a technical and business perspectives. We first give an overview of existing access sharing models, that span physical local loop unbundling and virtual unbundled local access. We then describe different types of optical access technologies and highlight how they support network sharing. Next, we examine how the concept of SDN and network virtualization has been pivotal in enabling the idea of “true multi-tenancy”, through the use of programmability, flexible architecture and resource isolation. We give examples of recent developments of cloud central office and OLT virtualization. Finally, we provide an insight into the role that novel business models, such as blockchain and smart contract technology, could play in 5G networks. We discuss how these might evolve, to provide flexibility and dynamic operations that are needed in the data and control planes.

Design of each successor mobile technology assures improved and advanced functionality features compared to its predecessor. Machine Learning and generally Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming necessity for further expansion of the beyond 5G mobile world. AI-assisted IoT services, data collection, analytics and storage should become native in the beyond 5G era. 5G introduces New Radio (NR) in sub-6 GHz bands and also in mmWave bands above 24 GHz, network virtualization and softwarization, which means that Next Generation Core and 5G NR access network are built by using different functions in split user and control planes that introduces the network slicing approach. Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC) and Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC), that are provided via separate network slices as logically separated network partitions are the key 5G services that constantly will increase the traffic volume and the number of connected devices. Terahertz and visible light communication and fundamental technologies like compressed sensing theory, new channel coding, large-scale antenna, flexible spectrum usage, AI-based wireless communication, special technical features as Space-Air-Ground-Sea integrated communication and wireless tactile network are few of the novelties that are expected to become a common network standard available beyond 2030.

Managing the multiple services of the leased line at the same location is quite critical especially when the resource become highly utilized. Bundling the several network resource components into a one box by simplifying the multiple networks to a single network can help to reduce the utilization of network resources. This paper presents a study on optimiziation of leased line distribution at the EDGE of Local Access Network via WAN convergence network. In this study, a WAN Convergence Network is designed which intends to use only a single leased line network in a location rather than multiple leased lines. It is using a simple concept of SDH structured which channelized the time slots and control the transmission line. The time slots will be relocated from the multiple leased lines into a WAN Convergence Network and it will be de-multiplexed through the Data Circuit Terminating Equipment (DCE) at the customer premises. The WAN Convergence Network design starts from the Digital Data Network (DDN) until the DCE which includes the Local Access Network. This approach will be able to save the network resource especially the time slots, cable port, DCE and consequently avoid adding new network infrastructure. This research will result to the new network design which offer multiple leased line networks at the customer end by using only one dedicated leased line network namely WAN Convergence Network.


A comprehensive broadband information network has been the goal of many Telecom operators worldwide. It is likely that such target networks will be single mode and will use time- and wavelength-division multiplexing and eventually coherent technologies to carry all services (including high-definition television). At issue is whether fibring of the local-access network can proceed by direct installation of such comprehensive target systems in the 1990s, or whether fibre solutions could first become cost-effective for current narrowband services and then gracefully evolve to broadband services. Regarding the technologies, there is more familiarity with star networks involving one or two fibres to each customer. In this paper, recent developments in the use of passive distributed networks are described, and optoelectronic issues affecting the adoption of star and distributed technologies are considered against the means of achieving future broadband infrastructures.

There have been important developments in the field of veterinary parasitology over the last few years. This symposium was called to collect individuals together, who have made significant contributions to their field of study, to present and summarize their work.I would like to pause for a moment before introducing the Symposium in this preface to comment on the sad loss of Professor Peter Nansen, a particularly eminent Danish scientist who developed our field of study. I, like many others, remember him with affection. He was a very helpful colleague and outstanding leader of the Danish Centre for Experimental Parasitology, Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Frederiksberg C. We are all saddened by his death and will continue to carry our memories of him with us.

The home network is one of the emerging areas from the last century. However, the growth of the home network market is stationary at present. This paper describes the limitations of the home network system and the requirements for overcoming the current limitations. Also described is a new home network service system known as COWS and its easy installation and scalable operation. COWS consists of power consumption monitor and control devices along with a service server that is a complementary combination of Open Service Gateway initiative (OSGi) and web services. A home network system has a dynamic, heterogeneous, distributed, and scalable topology. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) has been proposed as a solution that satisfies the requirement of a home network, and OSGi and web services are two successful SOA-based frameworks. An included service server has a flexible architecture that consists of a core and extendable service packages. A power consumption monitor and control function provides useful context information for activity-based context-aware services and optimizes the power consumption. The system can be installed easily into existing and new houses to solve the current barrier of the popularization of home network services.

It facilitates to examine the implications of circular business models such as remanufacturing on operations management decisions. It also introduces them to the concept of total cost of ownership and impact of remanufacturing on reducing total cost of ownership. The cases help students to evaluate the challenges and opportunities of remanufacturing business in emerging economy like India. This case is among the first few cases on the application of circular economy principles in context of heavy-duty and off-road sector and the impact of these principles on product design and production planning and control decisions.

Practical applications of knowledge management are hindered by a lack of linkage between the accepted data-information-knowledge hierarchy with using pragmatic approaches. Specifically, the authors seek to clarify the use of the tacit-explicit dichotomy with a deductive synthesis of complementary concepts. The authors review appropriate segments of the KM/OL literature with an emphasis on the SECI model of Nonaka and Takeuchi. Looking beyond equating the sharing of knowledge with mere socialization, the authors deduce from more recent developments a knowledge creation, nurturing and control framework. Based on a cyclic and upward-spiraling data-information-knowledge structure, the authors' proposed model affords top managers and their consultants opportunities for capturing, debating and storing richer information – as well as monitoring their progress and controlling their learning process.
