From new understanding of pectin molecular structure and physiological effects on man up to new production methods and new applications, significant new knowledge of pectin has emerged in the last two decades (2010-2020). These developments open the route to new and unexpected applications of this uniquely complex heteropolysaccharide ubiquitous in plants and fruits well beyond its traditional use as food hydrocolloid. This study provides a unified perspective on the new science and technology of pectin. Furthermore, we offer an insight into forthcoming pectin uses from an expanded perspective taking into account selected technology and economic factors that, we argue in this study, will shortly impact the pectin production and uptake in many countries.

Aim: The evolution of consumer expectations has led to the development of new production methods using low inputs. From an oenological point of view, these methods include the production of wines without any SO2 being added throughout the process. These wines are becoming very popular among consumers, but the absence of SO2 during winemaking increases the risk of stability problems. Such wines have been poorly explored in the literature and there is thus a real need for them to be characterised. This study was developed to evaluate whether Bordeaux quality wines produced without added SO2 have their own typicality, and it provides an insight into current wine production.Methods and results: From a batch of fifty-two commercial Bordeaux red wines produced without adding SO2 and twenty red wines made according to the usual winemaking methods, a selection tasting was performed to eliminate wines with at least one defect further to a sensory space evaluation. In a second phase, the Napping test was applied to defect-free wines to evaluate the sensory specificities of wines produced without SO2 addition. The wines without SO2 addition presented a much higher frequency of defects than those with SO2 (70 % vs 15 % respectively). Defects described in wines without added SO2 were: “Oxidation” (47 %), “Volatile phenols” (31 %), “Mousy off-flavor” (10 %), “Reduction” (8 %) and “Vegetable” (4 %). Since the study focused on quality wines with or without SO2 addition, it was difficult for the tasters to discriminate between them according to their overall technical pathway.Conclusion: This approach has revealed that despite the large number of “non-added SO2” wines with defects, upon blind tasting, expert tasters highlighted some “non-added SO2” wines without defects. Nevertheless, at equivalent quality levels within the same geographic region, and in non-targeted sensory tests, wines with and without SO2 addition were considered to be quite similar.Significance of the study: This study was a first sensory step toward the objective characterisation of “non-added SO2” wines, enabling further work to highlight markers of quality in wines without SO2 addition and to develop the production of “non-added SO2” wines without defects. Nevertheless, at this stage, our results show that the absence of sulfites during the whole winemaking process, including bottling, increases the risk of the development of defects.

Systematic momentum trading is a prevalent risk premium strategy in different portfolios. This paper focuses on the performance of the managed futures strategy based on the momentum signal across different economic regimes, focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic period. COVID-19 had a solid but short-lived impact on financial markets, and therefore gives a unique insight into momentum strategies’ performance during such critical moments of market stress. We offer a new approach to implementing momentum strategies by adding macroeconomic variables to the model. We test a managed futures strategy’s performance with a well-diversified futures portfolio across different asset classes. The research concludes that constructing a portfolio based on academically/economically sound momentum signals with its allocation timing based on broader economic factors significantly improves managed futures strategies and adds significant diversification benefits to the investors’ portfolios.

Background: An 8-month rotation programme was implemented for five nurses employed in two kinds of children's palliative care environments: hospital wards and hospices. This study reports the views of the nurses completing the rotation. The research drew on appreciative inquiry and involved a pre- and post-rotation interview and questionnaire. Thematic analysis of the interviews revealed seven themes: adjusting to the rotation programme; support mechanisms; being safe; new knowledge and skills; knowledge exchange; misconceptions; future plans. These were supported by the questionnaire findings. Although the nurses identified some frustration at having to undertake competency assessments relating to previously acquired skills, as well as being out of their ‘comfort zone’, all the participants highly recommended the programme. They commented very positively on the support they received and the overall learning experience as well as the new insight into different aspects of care. In addition, they were able to share their newfound knowledge and expertise with others.

Purpose – This paper aims to provide a European perspective on the collaborative robot business and to consider the factors governing future market development. Design/methodology/approach – Following an introduction, this first describes the collaborative robots launched recently by European manufacturers and their applications. It then discusses major European research activities and finally considers the factors stimulating the market. Findings – This article shows that collaborative robots are being commercialised by the major European robot manufacturers as well as by several smaller specialists. Although most have low payload capacities they are inexpensive and offer a number of operational benefits, making them well suited to a range of existing and emerging applications. Europe has a strong research base and several EU-funded programmes aim to stimulate collaborative robot development and use. Rapid market development is anticipated, driven in the main by applications in electronic product manufacture and assembly; new applications in the automotive industry; uses by small to medium-sized manufacturers; and companies seeking robots to support agile production methods. Originality/value – This paper provides a timely review of the rapidly developing European collaborative robot industry.

The iEducate mini-conference was a professional development approach used in a college of education that has a one to one iPad initiative. Students were strongly encouraged to attend workshops on effective iPad integration strategies for the classroom during a one-week period. A total of 87 students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members participated and two-thirds indicated they would participate in similar events in the future. Participants indicated that opportunities to share their knowledge and collaborate with peers to explore new applications and integration strategies, connect new knowledge and skills to K12 classroom practice, and talk to K12 students about their vision for technology integration were beneficial outcomes of the experience. Discussion of the structure and management of the event, student feedback and plans for future implementations are provided.

Nanosilica (NS) has shown significant beneficial effects on concrete. However, the utilization of NS to achieve its maximum benefits is limited by the agglomeration of nanoparticles, which is associated with production methods and the method of NS dispersion in concrete. In this study, the effects of the utilization of NS as a suspension in calcium hydroxide (CH) on the hydration characteristics and the microstructure of the cement pastes were investigated with different levels of cement replacements (1%, 2%, 4%, and 6% NS) at 2, 7, and 28 days. The hydration of the cement pastes was investigated by isothermal calorimetry, and the measurement of CH content by thermogravimetry. The microstructures were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopic mapping. The microstructure of the pastes was characterized by analyzing the pore size and the pore size distribution using mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). The calorimetric studies indicated that the replacing cement by NS derived by this method leads to faster hydration up to 4% replacement. The CH contents could be reduced by the incorporation of NS. The pore structures revealed that the pastes with NS had become comparably denser than the pastes without NS. A positive insight into the durability characteristics was shown by the results of the MIP when using NS as suspensions.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is a culinary, medicinal, and ornamental plant appreciated for its antioxidant properties, mainly attributed to high content of rosmarinic acid. This species also includes purple varieties, characterized by the accumulation of anthocyanins in leaves and flowers. In this work, we compared the main morphological characteristics, the antioxidant capacity and the chemical composition in leaves, flowers, and corollas of green (‘Italiano Classico’) and purple (‘Red Rubin’ and ‘Dark Opal’) basil varieties. The LC-ESI-MS/MS analysis of individual compounds allowed quantifying 17 (poly)phenolic acids and 18 flavonoids, differently accumulated in leaves and flowers of the three varieties. The study revealed that in addition to rosmarinic acid, basil contains several members of the salvianolic acid family, only scarcely descripted in this species, as well as, especially in flowers, simple phenolic acids, such as 4-hydroxybenzoic acid and salvianic acid A. Moreover, the study revealed that purple leaves mainly contain highly acylated anthocyanins, while purple flowers accumulate anthocyanins with low degree of decoration. Overall, this study provides new biochemical information about the presence of not yet characterized bioactive compounds in basil that could contribute to boosting the use of this crop and to gaining new knowledge about the roles of these compounds in plant physiology.

Tacit knowledge attenuates particularly quickly in organizations that experience discontinuous membership: the coming and going of organizational roles or positions during a workflow process. Since knowledge flows enable workflows, and workflows drive performance, theory suggests that dynamic knowledge—particularly tacit knowledge—is critical for competitive advantage. This research seeks to extend established organization theory, through integration of emerging knowledge-flow theory, to inform the design of discontinuous organizations. Toward this end, we build a computational model based upon ethnographic study of an affordable housing project that experienced severe discontinuous membership. Analysis of this model reveals problematic theoretical gaps, and provides insight into how scholarly understanding of knowledge flows can extend organization theory to address discontinuous organizations. This research contributes new knowledge for designing knowledge-based organizations in discontinuous contexts.
