Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a commitment of the organizations to act ethically and contribute to economic development of the society while humanizing the quality of life of the workforce and the local community at large. This is a talented issue for the corporation the world over. CSR is required for the organizations to ensure its sustainability. Now-a-days the practice of CSR is subject to much debate and criticism. Critics argue that CSR deviates from the fundamental economic role of business; others argue that it is nothing more than superficial windowdressing; others yet argue that it is an attempt to pre-empt the role of governments as a watchdog over powerful multinational corporations. Notwithstanding, CSR is a global concern and all organizations practice it to some extent. In this article the authors made an effort to justify CSR and the concomitant issues in the light of Shar?ah, and examine the welfare practices of some Islamic Organizations in Bangladesh to see whether those fall under the traditional concept of CSR. An investigation has been made into some Islamic organizations in Bangladesh using an unstructured questionnaire. It transpires from the study that almost all these investigated Islamic organizations practice social responsibilities in different forms like Qard-E–Hasanah, scholarships/stipends, plantation, health services, establishing schools etc. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/iiucs.v7i0.12271 IIUC Studies Vol.7 2011: 249-282

The subject of this research is the international practices of utilization of social capital of local communities for the purpose of development of tourism attractiveness of the territories. The object of this research is the social capital of local communities. The author explores such aspects of the topic as the development of tourism on the basis of local community, stimulation of social activism and communication between the locals, their ability to self-organization on the local level within the framework of international projects. Special attention is given to the risks and negative consequences for the local communities caused by tourism. The conclusions is made that the role of the representatives of local communities is considered as one of the key elements within the international practice of tourism development. This relates to the formation of tolerant and friendly tourism space for maintaining a “geographical myth”, which cannot be created without involvement of the local residents. Such process must be manageable for the authorities that ensure protection of local population from the sociocultural threats caused by tourists. International experience can be adapted in the Russian realities to some extent, however this process requires outworking of the corresponding mechanism of three-way interaction of the local government, business and local residents. The scientific novelty lies int the attempts of critical revaluation of the role of social capital of local communities at the time of transformation of tourism industry due to unfavorable epidemic situation.

This paper focuses strongly on the role of social capital in multi-stakeholders partnership model which was developed by PT. Unilever Indonesia Tbk in the implementation of corporate social responsibility in Bantul, Yogyakarta.  In this research context social capital is defined as the networks, trust, norms and commitment that enable Unilever and its stakeholders to achieve mutual defined goals through collaboration. This is a post-positivist paradigm phenomenology-interpretive research. Data were collected by conducting in-depth interviews with key informants involved in the project e.g. university’s academicians, NGO, financial institutions, farmers, women/wives of farmers and Unilever of Indonesia Foundation. The study shows that the partnership was created based on the principle of symbiosis-mutualism, where each partner gets some benefits from its partnership. The partnership was developed to empower black soy beans farmers to provide a guarantee supply of black soybeans with a quantity, quality and price in accordance with the standards established by the Unilever. In cooperation with various stakeholders, Unilever has developed some production centers of black soybeans to fulfill it needs. By doing this, the company is able to improve the quality of life of the farmers. Therefore, this project has fulfilled two different values: economics (business) value and social value.
