Application of DOWS (Downhole Oil Water Separation) Technology Used in High Water-Cut Oilfield: Case Study

The three-phase separator has a wide range of applications in oil production industry. For the purpose of studying the effect of heating temperature, demulsifiers and water content on the separation of oil-water mixture in the three-phase separator, eight kinds of oil samples were taken from different oil transfer stations in Changqing Oilfield and the mixtures were prepared by stirring method. To simulate the two-stage dehydration process, the first stage dehydration experiments without any heating were performed on mixtures at the dose of 100ppm demulsifer at 20°C, and the water cut of these mixtures is the same as that of the gathering pipeline in each oil transfer station. The water cut of the upper crude oil was measured after 40 minutes, and the values of them ranged from 0.5 vol% to 65.2 vol%. No visual stratification was observed for the sample most difficult to separate, so it was selected to conduct the second stage dewatering process. Three bottles of the same mixture were prepared and heated to 30°C, 40°C and 50°C, respectively. The results showed that all of them stratified in 10 minutes, and the water-cut values of the upper oil layer were 1.4 vol%, 0.5 vol% and 0.3 vol%, respectively, compared to 65.2 vol% at 20°C. When the concentration of demulsifier was changed to 200ppm and 300ppm, the results exhibited almost no differences. So it is deduced that the further improvement of heating temperature and demulsifier dose have limited enhancement on oil-water separation. At Last, 35 vol%, 50 vol%, 70 vol% and 85 vol% water cut mixtures of the special oil sample were made to experiment as previously. In consequence, the 35 vol% water-cut emulsions presented a relatively slow rate of oil-water stratification at low heating temperature, and the oil content of the lower separated water was improved by the addition of demulsifier dosage above 100ppm when the water cut was 90 vol%. It is indicated that high heating temperature is necessarry for low water-cut mixtures oil-water separation and can be appropriately reduced to save energy consumption as the water cut continues to rise. The demulsifier dosage is also neccessary be controlled in high water cut period. These experimental data provide the basis for the further optimization operation of the three-phase separator.

Abstract The expected profiles of the water produced from the mature ADNOC fields in the coming years imply a 5-fold increase and the OPEX of the produced / injected water will increase considerably. This requires in-situ water separation and reinjection. The objective is to reduce the cost of handling produced water and to extend the well natural flow performance resulting in increased and accelerated production. The current practice of handling produced water is inexpensive in the short term, but it can affect the operating cost and the recovery in the long term as the expected water cut for the next 10-15 years is high. A new water management tool called downhole separation technology was developed. It separates Oil & Gas from produced water inside the wellbore and injects the produced water into the disposal wells. The Downhole Oil Water Separation Technology is one of the key development strategies that will reduce the handling Produced water, improve the recovery, and minimize field development cost by eliminating surface water treatment and disposal well. The main benefits for DHOWS are to accelerate Oil Offtake, reduce Production Cost, Lower Water Production and Improve facility Utilization. DHOWS require specific criteria to meet the objectives of the well. Multi-disciplined inputs are needed to properly install effective DHOWS, but robust design often brings strong performance. This paper describes the fundamental criteria and workflow for selecting the most suitable DHOWS design for new and sidetracked wells to deliver ADNOC production mandates cost effectively while meeting completion requirements and adhering to reservoir management guidelines.

Abstract Single-layer water cut measurement is of great significance for identifying and shutting off the unwanted water, analyzing oil remained and optimizing production. Currently, however, only the water cut of multilayer mixture can be measured by testing samples taken from wellhead, a way which is widely used in oilfields. That of single-layer fluid cannot be determined yet To address the problem, this paper puts forward a new impedance sensor that offers long-term online monitoring of single-layer water cut. This sensor is based on the different electrical conductivity of oil and water. It has two layers. The inner one contains three electrodes - two at both sides sending sinusoidal excitation signals and one at the middle receiving signals that have been attenuated by the water-oil medium. With the Maxwell's model of oil-water mixed fluid, the receiver then can measure the water cut online. The outer layer of the sensor is made of PEEK, an insulative protection. In front of the electrodes lies a static mixer which makes the measurement more accurate by fully blending the two media when they flow through the electrodes. Laboratory tests are carried out with the prototype of the sensor at various oil-water mixing ratios, fluid flow rates, and temperatures. Results show that the average margin of error is within ± 3%. Higher accuracy is seen when high water cut and flow rate enable oil globules to disperse more evenly and the space in between to get wider and the RMS error is less than 2%. If the water cut drops below 80%, the aggregation of the droplets will cause wild fluctuation and more errors in the measurement. In addition, the mineralization of the mixture directly changes its conductivity, which largely impacts the result. Meanwhile, temperature can influence the ionic movement intensity and then alter the conductivity of the medium. Therefore, in practice, the sensor calibration needs to be performed according to the range of medium salinity, and the temperature of the medium is collected in real time for temperature compensation. It is shown that after the adjustment, the water cut measurement results have higher accuracy and consistency. The impedance sensor can realize online water cut monitoring for a single-layer, indicated by tests. It is more suitable for the increasing high water cut oilfields in that it is more accurate as the water cut grows.

Abstract The Umm Gudair (UG) Field is a carbonate reservoir of West Kuwait with more than 57 years of production history. The average water cut of the field reached closed to 60 percent due to a long history of production and regulating drawdown in a different part of the field, consequentially undulating the current oil/water contact (COWC). As a result, there is high uncertainty of the current oil/water contact (COWC) that impacts the drilling strategy in the field. The typical approach used to develop the field in the lower part of carbonate is to drill deviated wells to original oil/water contact (OOWC) to know the saturation profile and later cement back up to above the high-water saturation zone and then perforate with standoff. This method has not shown encouraging results, and a high water cut presence remains. An innovative solution is required with a technology that can give a proactive approach while drilling to indicate approaching current oil/water contact and geo-stop drilling to give optimal standoff between the bit and the detected water contact (COWC). Recent development of electromagnetic (EM) look-ahead resistivity technology was considered and first implemented in the Umm Gudair (UG) Field. It is an electromagnetic-based signal that can detect the resistivity features ahead of the bit while drilling and enables proactive decisions to reduce drilling and geological or reservoir risks related to the well placement challenges.

ABSTRACT Jake field, discovered in July, 2006, contains 10 oil-producing and 12 condensate gas-producing zones. The wells have high flow capacities, producing from long-perforation interval of 3,911 ft (from 4,531 to 8,442 ft). Production mechanisms include gas injection in downdip wells and traditional gas lift in updip, zonal production wells since the start-up of field in July, 2010. Following pressure depletion of oil and condensate-gas zones and water breakthrough, traditional gas-lift wells became inefficient and dead. Based on nodal analysis of entire pay zones, successful innovations in gas lift have been made since March, 2013. This paper highlights them in the following aspects: Extend end of tubing to the bottom of perforations for commingled production of oil and condensate gas zones, in order to utilize condensate gas producing from the lower zones for in-situ gas lift.Produce well stream from the casing annulus while injecting natural gas into the tubing.High-pressure nitrogen generated in-situ was used to kick off the dead wells, instead of installation of gas lift valves for unloading. After unloading process, the gas from compressors was injected down the tubing and back up the casing annulus.For previous high water-cut producers, prior to continuous gas lift, approximately 3.6 MMcf of nitrogen can be injected and soaked a couple of days for anti-water-coning.Two additional 10-in. flow lines were constructed to minimize the back pressure of surface facilities on wellhead. As a consequence, innovative gas-lift brought dead wells back on production, yielding average sustained liquid rate of 7,500 bbl/d per well. Also, the production decline curves flattened out than before.

In order to solve the problem of high water cut wells in some oil field in Daqing that it could not get the large-scale application because of the bad separating effect of down hole centrifugal oil-water separator, we optimize the design of multi-cup uniform flux oil-water separator according to the similar separation principle of multi-cup uniform flux gas anchor, and it is obtained to achieve of injection-production technology in the same well which is of high water cut. The design concept of the separator is increasing the number of opening every layer and aperture gradually in subsection from up to down in the design process. The purpose is to get the close intake quantity of every orifice and guarantee the residence time is long enough in the separator, effectively shorten the length of down hole oil-water separator and reduce the production costs and operating costs.
