Identification, quantification and assessment of uncertainty are essential in the petrochemical industry. During the construction or maintenance phases of an oil transportation pipe line, there is a high degree of risk for accidents, which would be fatal to the human resources and the environment. The Society of Consulting Engineers are subject matter specialists in Iran who are required to provide risk assessment services for oil and gas field pipe line projects. The purpose of this study was to survey 30 Consulting Engineer experts for their priorities on most likely risks, which occur in oil pipelines during construction or maintenance modes. The risk categories were informed from a literature review (theory deduction). Then the Analytical Hierarchy Procedure was used to normalize the uncertainty estimates and to rank the risk occurrence likelihood. The results indicated that gas compressors, ancillary facilities, storage tanks and pumping stations, respectively, had the highest risk level according to the experts.

Enbridge Pipelines (NW) Inc. (formerly Interprovincial Pipe Line (NW) Ltd.) owns and operates a buried 323mm diameter crude oil pipeline from Norman Wells, NWT to Zama, AB. The pipeline is approximately 869 km in length, with the route following a portion of the Mackenzie River Valley in the Northwest Territories. The pipeline routing is through discontinuous permafrost that has the potential to interact with the pipeline through frost heave, slope movement and thaw settlement that can produce extreme structural stresses in the pipe wall. Given the proper conditions, these stresses may localize and the pipeline will deform plastically, causing pipe wall wrinkling. This paper reviews the general structural design and discusses the inspection and monitoring of the structural integrity of the pipeline, as well as the intervention criteria used to determine when structural mitigation is required. This case study will discuss the discovery of a wrinkle from internal inspection pig data, field dig verification, installation and monitoring of field instrumentation and the pipeline repair technique that was utilized.

One of the problems in the operation of pipelines for oil and gas through the sea is the damage and failure submarine pipe line (SPL). The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the factors and causes of damage and failure of the submarine pipeline which results in the cessation of the supply of feed intake of crude oil to the oil refinery unit. The method used in this research is a application research with a case study approach to the handling of problems with damage and failure of submarine pipelines, how the replacement and how to protect it is most suitable and in accordance with applicable regulations. The results showed that the protection of submarine pipelines with articulated concrete block matresses and immersion as deep as 2 meters had completed the regulatory aspects and were safe against the effects of collisions and dragged ship anchors. The results of this study also recommend that this protection method can be replicated to overcome similar problems in other work units.

AbstractUsing interviews with former militants and previously unpublished documents, this article traces the genesis and internal dynamics of the Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo (People's Revolutionary Army, ERP) in El Salvador during the early years of its existence (1970–6). This period was marked by the inability of the ERP to maintain internal coherence or any consensus on revolutionary strategy, which led to a series of splits and internal fights over control of the organisation. The evidence marshalled in this case study sheds new light on the origins of the armed Salvadorean Left and thus contributes to a wider understanding of the processes of formation and internal dynamics of armed left-wing groups that emerged from the 1960s onwards in Latin America.

Abstract Culture shapes our basic sensory experience of the world. This is particularly striking in the study of religion and psychosis, where we and others have shown that cultural context determines both the structure and content of hallucination-like events. The cultural shaping of hallucinations may provide a rich case-study for linking cultural learning with emerging prediction-based models of perception.

Abstract Hoerl and McCormack demonstrate that although animals possess a sophisticated temporal updating system, there is no evidence that they also possess a temporal reasoning system. This important case study is directly related to the broader claim that although animals are manifestly capable of first-order (perceptually-based) relational reasoning, they lack the capacity for higher-order, role-based relational reasoning. We argue this distinction applies to all domains of cognition.

Abstract Sociocultural developmental psychology can drive new directions in gadgetry science. We use autobiographical memory, a compound capacity incorporating episodic memory, as a case study. Autobiographical memory emerges late in development, supported by interactions with parents. Intervention research highlights the causal influence of these interactions, whereas cross-cultural research demonstrates culturally determined diversity. Different patterns of inheritance are discussed.
