Abstract The authors have analyzed invention patents in the Russian oil and gas sector (OGS) based on a knowledge database complexity index they designed for this purpose. The index takes into account the subclasses and sections of international patent classification (IPC) used in the patents. It has been demonstrated that opportunities for creating breakthrough technologies and radical innovations mostly arise within giant multinational oil and gas field service companies (e.g. Halliburton, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes). At the same time, Russian oil and service companies are noticeably lagging behind the foreign players and Russian actors in the sphere of science and education. The conducted analysis of the sectoral knowledge database revealed several significant risks for the development of the Russian OGS along the innovative trajectory. The risks (relative to the invention patents) arise from inadequate opportunities for creating breakthrough technologies.

The oil and gas sector is an important factor in sustainable development, so it is considered necessary to make serious changes in conducting economic analysis on the oil and gas business. Oil and gas industry activities consist of upstream activities, and downstream activities. Activities in these upstream and downstream operations have high risk, high costs and high technology, so the company continuously tries to reduce the importance of the adverse impact of these risks on the work environment and people. Thus, evaluating the factors that affect sustainable production in this sector becomes a necessity. In this research will be evaluated the economy of the oil and gas field using methods of economic indicators, among others; NPV, POT, ROR, where these factors are estimated in order to be able to estimate the prospects of the oil and gas field so that the decision that the field development project can be implemented or cannot be taken immediately. Implementation of oil and gas field economic evaluation in this study using Macro VBA Excel. From several methods of economic analysis obtained that the results of this study show high precision compared to other methods, in addition to the way of evaluation using the above economic indicators is very popular.

Abstract Present day industries worldwide, including oil and gas sector, are going through a transition from the traditional concept of isolated operation to a more cohesive and interconnected digital transformation. The driving forces behind the transformation can be summarized as follows: -A collaborative workplace spanning multiple locations, where the processes can be synchronized through an integrated work management system-Reduced deployment of manpower to remote and hazardous locations through implementation of remote monitoring and control from a central location-Providing intelligent guidance to operation and maintenance through implementation of training, real-time troubleshooting etc.-Informed decision making through historical data, real-time video, lessons learnt etc.-Storage and mobility of data, efficient computing and distributed workload-Machine substitution of human performance (artificial intelligence, drones, robots etc.) From all these drivers, evolves the concept of Internet of Things (IoT). On the field side, the idea of IoT means to deploy web-enabled devices having unique addressable identity. A plethora of such field instruments, devices, machines, processes and people then need to be interconnected over internet through a robust and reliable telecom infrastructure to make such integrated platform happen. Therefore, on the backbone side, this complex mesh of interconnectivity largely depends on the availability of a feasible and practical communication media. Providing a viable communication media becomes more challenging with the constraints of locations involved – their remoteness, difficult terrains, prevalent hazardous atmosphere, to name a few. The objective of this paper is to present one such communication scheme through VSAT, which is easy to deploy, economically viable, scalable with growing demand and based on emerging technology of private satellite communication. For the sake of objectivity, this paper discusses most of the scenarios with an offshore oil and gas field, although the idea can be generalized to apply on other sectors and industries.

Abstract When surfactant is used as emulsifier, the stability of emulsion is often greatly reduced with the influence of reservoir conditions (temperature, pressure, salinity, etc.), which shortens the validity period of emulsion. Pickering emulsion has a wide range of applications in the oil and gas field due to its advantages of good stability and easy regulation. In this article, the formation, stabilization mechanism, and influencing factors of Pickering emulsions were introduced, and the application status and prospects of Pickering emulsions in oil and gas field were summarized. It was pointed out that Pickering emulsion has many advantages and important research value when applied in deep strata and complicated reservoirs. It is expected that this article can effectively reflect the application value of Pickering emulsion in oil and gas field and promote the application of Pickering emulsion in petroleum industry.

Thawing of ice-saturated rocks due to climate change or various technological impacts will be accompanied by subsidence of the earth’s surface and development of dangerous permafrost geological processes called thermokarst, leading to accidents, which may destruct the wells. Currently, the investment programs of the development of new northern oil and gas fields are restricted. In this regard, reducing the cost of developing the oil and gas fields is an urgent problem. For example, diminishing the area of well pads and maintaining efficiency in the northern oil and gas fields can significantly reduce the costs, in particular, during the design stage. A model of unsteady thermal fields propagation in frozen soil from new well construction for the North Mukerkamyl oil and gas field is developed, taking into account the construction features, the annulus, and the complex lithology of the soil surrounding the well. It is planned to take into account climatic and technological factors, in particular, an annual rest period of well operation, which held from several hours to two weeks. The paper discusses the computational features of the thermal fields calculating in frozen ground from wells and explores the influence of various parameters, which in the computations may lead to a significant increasing of thawing area in the well pads

The paper shows the development of technogenic axial loads acting on the column of casing pipes during the construction of directional wells. Axial loads depend on the angle of inclination of the wellbore trajectory and its length in the productive deposit, as well as from the timing of the input of the inclined-directed section of the trunk from the beginning of the development of the field.

Abstract A common problem in oil and gas field is premature and excessive water production through higher permeable thief zone, faults, water conning or channeling and natural or induced fracture. Excessive water production impacts the economics of a well through increasing rate of corrosion, emulsion and scale formation, consequently shortening its production life and lowering flowing wellhead pressure. There are several techniques used to control excessive water production such as chemical and mechanical. In this work a novel chemical approach was followed to tackle excessive water production in Taq Taq oil field located in Kurdistan Region Iraq. Water production into the reservoir was determined to be through the fractures as the reservoir units are highly fractured carbonates. Therefore, the chemicals designed by this work were to reduce excessive water production selectively and fracture connectivity in the zones where excessive water production is expected. Three nano-solutions have been prepared and investigated for their rheological properties. Only one is selected and met the field screening criteria. The composition of the nano-solutions were mainly polyacrylamide mixed with nano composite of cement, clay and inorganic cross-linker. All nano-solution underwent extensive screening and studied for their mechanical strength, toughness and tensile module. Results showed that nano-solutions strength increases with increasing the nano concentration. Similarly, their viscosity and degradation resistance are improved noticeably with nano composites. The scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was also used to characterized the nano size and distribution studied by this work.

Abstract Pipeline leak or failure is a dreaded event in the oil and gas industries. Top events such as catastrophes and multiple fatalities have occurred in the past due to pipeline leak or failure especially when loss of contents was met with fire incidents. It is therefore imperative that the causes of pipeline failure are tackled to prevent or mitigate leak incidents. This is expedient to curb the menace that goes with leak incidents, such as destruction of the environment and ecosystem; loss of assets, finance, lives and property; dangers to workers and personnel, production downtime, litigation and dent to company’s reputation. This work focuses on the investigation of the actual cause of sudden pipeline failures and frequent pipeline leaks that often result to sectional pipeline replacement before the expiration of their anticipated life cycle in OML30 oil and gas field. The pipeline material selected, the standard of the minimum wall thickness of the material, the corrosive nature of the pipeline content and the observed internal corrosion rate were probed. An analysis of the rate of thinning and diminution of the internal wall of the pipeline by monitoring the interior rate of corrosion was used to forecast the remaining life of a crude oil pipeline and predict the life expectancy of a newly replaced or installed pipeline or installed pipeline.
