Abstract Background: Intensification of agricultural systems may result in overexploitation of water resources in arid regions because enhanced productivity of crops is often associated with increased actual evapotranspiration (AET). The aim of this study was to quantify the effect of increased regional AET on the groundwater level in a case study of the oasis located within the Shiyang River Basin near the edge of the Gobi Desert.Result: The results of the study show that regional AET increased during the period from 1981 to 2010 due to increasing oasis area and air temperature. The water losses due to AET exceeded the water supply from the mountainous discharges of the basin by the end of this period, leading to groundwater overexploitation in the oasis area.Conclusions: This case study shows the importance of considering the effect of climate change on water losses associated with increasing agricultural production for the sustainable agricultural development of arid regions.

<p>Groundwater is the main source of drinking water in the Nile Delta. Unfortunately, it might be polluted by seepage from polluted streams. This study was carried out to investigate the possible measures  to  protect groundwater  in the Nile delta aquifer using a numerical model (MT3DMS - Mass Transport 3-Dimension Multi-Species). The sources of groundwater contamination were identified and the total dissolved solids (TDS) was taken as an indicator for the contamination. Different strategies were investigated for mitigating the impact of polluted water: i) allocating polluted drains and canals in lower permeability layers; ii)  installing cut-off walls in the polluted drains, and finally, iii) using lining materials in polluted drains and canals. Results indicated these measures effective to mitigate the groundwater pollution. In particular, the cut-off wall was effective for contamination reduction in shallow aquifers, whereas it had no effect in the deep aquifer, while lining materials in polluted drains and canals were able to prevent contamination and to protect the freshwater in the aquifers.  It is worth mentioning that this study was partially supported by a bilateral project between ASRT (Egypt) and CNR (Italy).</p><p> </p><p> </p>

This research has been done to identify changes in agricultural land to non-agriculture causing the establishment of illegal settlements. Viewed from the standpoint of nature this research is descriptive research, carried out in order to help in strengthening old theories or within the framework of developing new theories. Research locations are in the Office of the Regional Planning, Research and Development (BP3D) Boyolali Regency and Boyolali Regency Agriculture Office. Data collection was carried out by interview and literature study. Data analysis technique is done by data reduction, data display and conclusion. The results show that agricultural development will occur if land problems over the conversion of agricultural land into settlements are unavoidable or need to find a solution to a problem that is very urgent, this is by studying the impact of the problem and socializing the community over these impacts and their resolution to obtain clarity of land legality the conversion. When land starts to shrink, domestic food needs will decrease because population growth cannot be avoided every year. For this reason, immediate special handling is needed, such as direct counseling for the community. Will be danger of land conversion is carried out continuously. Development of the latest technology is needed to manage the land so that fertility does not decrease quickly so as to reduce land productivity. Another way replacement of agricultural land which is used as an alternative handling of the legality problem of conversion of agricultural land.

Subject. This article explores the trends in agricultural development, the impact of government regulation, and the effectiveness of agribusiness at the regional level. The Republic of Mordovia is a case study. Objectives. The article aims to identify the key priority areas of agricultural development in the Republic of Mordovia. Methods. For the study, I used the methods of dynamic and factor analyses, comparison, and generalization. Results. The article identifies the main problems hindering the development of the industry and offers recommendations to address them. Conclusions. In general, the dynamics of the agro-industrial complex of Russia's development is positive, although there are significant financial problems in some regions. To improve the situation, it is advisable to provide financial support not to profitable enterprises of the industry only, but also the low-profit ones.

Water is the most critical factor that restricts the economic and social development of arid regions. It is urgent to understand the impact on cryospheric changes of water resources in arid regions in western China under the background of global warming. A cryospheric basin hydrological model (CBHM) was used to simulate the runoff, especially for glaciers and snowmelt water supply, in the Shiyang River Basin (SRB). A cryosphere water resources service function model was proposed to evaluate the value of cryosphere water resources. The annual average temperature increased significantly (p > 0.05) from 1961 to 2016. The runoff of glacier and snowmelt water in the SRB decreased significantly. This reduction undoubtedly greatly weakens the runoff regulation function. The calculation and value evaluation of the amount of water resources in the cryosphere of Shiyang River Basin is helpful to the government for adjusting water structure to realize sustainable development.
