Abstract The solution casting method was utilized to synthesize nanocomposite films of chitosan (Cs)/CuO, Cs/graphene oxide (GO), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/TiO2, CMC/GO, sodium alginate (Na Alg)/TiO2, and Na-Alg/GO owing to their various applications. The influence of CuO, TiO2 and GO concentration on the optical properties of Cs, CMC and Na-Alg films was studied by UV-Vis Spectroscopy. The absorbance of Cs, CMC and Na-Alg increased with increasing the filler content, thus reflecting the dependence of Cs, CMC, and Na-Alg properties on the nanofiller content, and confirming the interactions between individual polymers and CuO, TiO2 and GO nanoparticles. The obtained absorbance values were then used to calculate the absorption coefficient and, hence, the optical band gap values. The characteristic absorption bands of CuO and TiO2 underwent a redshift by increasing the filler content. The results showed that the optical band gap of Cs, CMC, and Na-Alg decreased with filler content, and they possessed 1, 2 and 2 band gaps respectively. The obtained results recommended that Cs, CMC, and Na-Alg nanocomposites can be used in optoelectronic devices.

We report the synthesize of Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) using ablation method with reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) solution as a starting material. We have varied the concentration of rGO as following: 0.5, 2, 5 mg/ml and then have ablated them using 800 nm Ti-Sapphire femtosecond laser to obtain GQDs. From the UV-Vis data, we observed that the more concentration of rGO is being ablated, the more secondary absorption peak at 255.1 nm appeared. This secondary absorption peak is a characteristic of n-π* bonding due to the presence of oxygen defect which occurs as a result of the interaction between the laser and the water in rGO solution. We conclude that the population of oxigen defect in GQDs is increasing, following the increase of rGO concentration and could alter the optical properties of GQD. On the other hand, using Tauc’s plot, we confirm that the increase of rGO concentration as the ablated material does not alter GQDs optical band gap. However, it will slightly reduce both, direct and indirect Oxygen defect related optical band gap.

Modifying the physical and optical properties of zinc borotellurite glasses by controlling rare earth (RE) doping is important in order to obtain high quality glass. In this study, Samarium (Sm3+) doped zinc borotellurite glasses were successfully fabricated by using conventional melt-quenching technique with chemical composition (where x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 mol%). The physical properties by mean of their density as well as molar volume were measured while the optical properties have been studied through UV-Vis spectroscopy in order to determine the optical band gap (Eopt) and Urbach energy (ΔΕ) of the glass system. Optical absorption spectra of the glass samples were recorded in the range 350 nm - 750 nm at room temperature. The amorphous nature of the glass was confirmed from X-ray diffraction techniques. The density and molar volume of the glass samples were found to vary with respect to Sm3+ ions content. The value of optical band gap, Eopt lies between 2.605 eV to 2.982 eV for the direct transition and 2.768 eV to 3.198 eV for the indirect transition respectively. Meanwhile, the Urbach energy, ΔE was observed in the range of 0.112 eV to 0.694 eV respectively. The physical and optical properties were found to be strongly affected by the varying concentration of Sm3+ ions. Some other results will be analysed and discussed in detail.

We have successfully demonstrated ZnO/Mg thin films on Mg seeded-template by using sol-gel spin-coating and immersion technique. By increasing weight percentage of Mg, zinc particles become agglomerate and displayed flower formed as displayed in FESEM characterization. It was observed that the morphology of the zinc particles on Mg seeded-template change from inconsistently distribution for 1 and 3 % into cluster flower-like of zinc particles for 5 and 7 % weight percentage of Mg. The optical properties of the ZnO/Mg thin films were examined by UV-Vis spectroscopy and the Tauc plot methods was used to estimate the optical band gap. The study reveals that, 7 % weight percentage of Mg was recorded as the highest transmittance which is more than 60 % in visible wavelength compared to others. With the rise weight percentage of Mg, the transmittance of the thin films was increased except for 5 %. This gradually downgraded to below 60 % of transmission most probably due to the grain size that becomes bigger. The optical band gap can be tuned by using different Mg percentage to the ZnO/Mg thin films.

The glass samples of zinc borotellurite glass doped with dysprosium nanoparticles with chemical formula TeO20.7B2O30.30.7ZnO0.31-xDy2O3x (where x= 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04 and 0.05 molar fraction) have been fabricated by using melt quenching technique. In this study, the structural and optical properties of the zinc borotellurite glass doped with dysprosium nanoparticles were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. From the XRD, the amorphous nature of the glass samples has been confirmed. The infrared spectra revealed four obvious bands which are assigned for BO3, BO4 and TeO4 vibrational groups. The direct and indirect optical band gap, as well as Urbach energy, was calculated through absorption spectra obtained from UV-Vis spectroscopy. From the spectra, it is observed that both direct and indirect optical band gap decreases as the concentration of dysprosium nanoparticles increase. Other than that, the Urbach energy is observed to have an inverse trend with the optical band gap. The Urbach energy is increases as the concentration of dysprosium nanoparticles increases.

Nanocomposite (NCP) films of polycarbonate-polybutylene terephthalate (PC-PBT) blend as a host material to Cr2O3 and CdS nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated by both thermolysis and casting techniques. Samples from the PC-PBT/Cr2O3 and PC-PBT/CdS NCPs were irradiated using different doses (20–110 kGy) of γ radiation. The induced modifications in the optical properties of the γ irradiated NCPs have been studied as a function of γ dose using UV Vis spectroscopy and CIE color difference method. Optical dielectric loss and Tauc's model were used to estimate the optical band gaps of the NCP films and to identify the types of electronic transition. The value of optical band gap energy of PC-PBT/Cr2O3 NCP was reduced from 3.23 to 3.06 upon γ irradiation up to 110 kGy, while it decreased from 4.26 to 4.14 eV for PC-PBT/CdS NCP, indicating the growth of disordered phase in both NCPs. This was accompanied by a rise in the refractive index for both the PC-PBT/Cr2O3 and PC-PBT/CdS NCP films, leading to an enhancement in their isotropic nature. The Cr2O3 NPs were found to be more effective in changing the band gap energy and refractive index due to the presence of excess oxygen atoms that help with the oxygen atoms of the carbonyl group in increasing the chance of covalent bonds formation between the NPs and the PC-PBT blend. Moreover, the color intensity, ΔE has been computed; results show that both the two synthesized NCPs have a response to color alteration by γ irradiation, but the PC-PBT/Cr2O3 has a more response since the values of ΔE achieved a significant color difference >5 which is an acceptable match in commercial reproduction on printing presses. According to the resulting enhancement in the optical characteristics of the developed NCPs, they can be a suitable candidate as activate materials in optoelectronic devices, or shielding sheets for solar cells.

This research paper proposes the usage of a simple thermal treatment method to synthesis the pure and Eu3+ doped ZnO/Zn2SiO4 based composites which undergo calcination process at different temperatures. The effect of calcination temperatures on the structural, morphological, and optical properties of ZnO/Zn2SiO4 based composites have been studied. The XRD analysis shows the existence of two major phases which are ZnO and Zn2SiO4 crystals and supported by the finding in the FT-IR. The FESEM micrograph further confirms the existence of both ZnO and Zn2SiO4 crystal phases, with progress in the calcination temperature around 700–800 °C which affects the existence of the necking-like shape particle. Absorption humps discovered through UV-Vis spectroscopy revealed that at the higher calcination temperature effects for higher absorption intensity while absorption bands can be seen at below 400 nm with dropping of absorption bands at 370–375 nm. Two types of band gap can be seen from the energy band gap analysis which occurs from ZnO crystal and Zn2SiO4 crystal progress. It is also discovered that for Eu3+ doped ZnO/Zn2SiO4 composites, the Zn2SiO4 crystal (5.11–4.71 eV) has a higher band gap compared to the ZnO crystal (3.271–4.07 eV). While, for the photoluminescence study, excited at 400 nm, the emission spectra of Eu3+ doped ZnO/Zn2SiO4 revealed higher emission intensity compared to pure ZnO/Zn2SiO4 with higher calcination temperature exhibit higher emission intensity at 615 nm with 700 °C being the optimum temperature. The emission spectra also show that the calcination temperature contributed to enhancing the emission intensity.

AbstractNanocomposite films of polymethylmethacrylate PMMA with Sn0.75Fe0.25S2 nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated by both thermolysis and casting techniques. Changes in PMMA/Sn0.75Fe0.25S2 nanocomposite (NCP) due to gamma irradiation have been measured. XRD results indicate that the gamma doses of 10–80 kGy cause intermolecular crosslinking that reduces the ordered portion in the NPs. Bonding between the NPs and the host PMMA was confirmed by FTIR. TGA results indicate an enhancement in thermal stability in the NCP films irradiated with doses 20–80 kGy. The optical band gap was reduced from 3.23 to 2.47 eV upon gamma irradiation up to 80 kGy due bonding between the NPs and PMMA which enhanced the amorphous part of the NPs. Finally, the color variation between the blank and irradiated films (ΔE) was determined. Color changes immensely when the PMMA/Sn0.75Fe0.25S2 NCP films are gamma irradiated. Values of ΔE were as much as 31.6 which is an acceptable match in commercial reproduction on printing presses.

Many researches have been done to obtain a low band gap and high Polymeric solar cell (PSCs) polymer either by creating new polymer or revising reported polymers from previous studies. In present work, two new copolymers were synthesized through direct arylation polymerization to produce poly(9,9-didodecylfluorene-alt-benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (P1) and poly(9,9-didodecylfluorene-altthieno[ 3,2-b]thiophene) (P2). The P1 and P2 are donor-accepter copolymers. P1 and P2 were compared to investigate its suitability to be applied in PSCs. The polymers obtained were characterized using FT-IR, NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. P1 shows two adsorption bands at λmax1 = 243 nm and λmax2 = 320 nm, whereas P2 also shows two adsorption bands at λmax1 = 243 nm and λmax2 = 427 nm. The optical band gap was calculated, P1 enabled band gap of 3.88 eV while P2 showed band gap of 2.91 eV. This work could be provided an insight to design and synthesize more efficient fluorene-based copolymers as active layer of PSCs in due course.

Nanocomposite films of Poly (methylmethacrylate) with different concentration of silver nanoparticles were prepared by ex-situ method. Firstly, silver nanoparticles were obtained by reducing the aqueous solution of silver nitrate with sodium borohydride then Ag-PMMA films were prepared by mixing colloidal solution of silver nanoparticles with solution of polymer. Thin solid films were structurally characterized using UV-VIS spectroscopy and TEM. The appearance of surface plasmon resonance peak, characteristic of silver nanoparticles at 420 nm in UV-VIS absorption spectra of Ag-PMMA films confirms the formation of Ag-PMMA nanocomposite. TEM showed Ag nanoparticles of average size 8 nm embedded in PMMA matrix. Analysis of absorption and reflection data indicates towards the reduction in optical band gap and increase in refractive index of the resulting nanocomposite. The synthesized Ag-PMMA nanocomposite has been found to be more conducting than PMMA as ascertained using I-V studies. The decrease in band gap and increase in conductivity can be correlated due to the formation of localized electronic states in PMMA matrix due to insertion of Ag nanoparticles. The PMMA thin films with dispersed silver nanoparticles may be useful for nanophotonic devices.
