In this paper, fracture toughness evaluation of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) binary blends and PBT/TPU/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) ternary nanocomposites have been conducted using both Izod impact and quasi-static fracture tests. Essential work of fracture (EWF) approach is used to study the fracture properties in details. The results of EWF tests revealed an effective role of TPU and CNTs in toughening mechanism of binary blends and ternary nanocomposites. According to EWF results, both the crack resistance and plastic deformation energies promoted in all compounds as compared to neat PBT. Energy dissipation in the yielding and tearing stages determined by the energy partitioning method. The obtained results indicated that displacement up to the failure point increased by increasing the TPU content, while inclusion of CNTs reduced this quantity. The specific non-essential work of fracture [Formula: see text] , [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] increased with increasing the TPU contents which is confirmed by load-displacement curves. Whereas, addition of CNTs reduced [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] values as compared to reference binary blend, however, ternary nanocomposites still have higher values as compared to pure PBT. In contrast with EWF results, high strain rate of impact test prevents the activation of toughness improving mechanisms that readily occurs in quasi-static loading.

This work presents the influences of glass fiber content on the mechanical and physical characteristics of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) reinforced with glass fibers (GF). For the mechanical characterization of the composites depending on the GF reinforcement rate, tensile tests are carried out. The results show that increasing the GF content in the polymer matrix leads to an increase in the stiffness of the composite but also to an increase in its brittleness. Scanning Electron Microscope analysis is performed, highlighting the multi-scale dependency on types of damage and macroscopic behavior of the composites. Furthermore, flammability tests were performed. They permit certifying the flame retardancy capacity of the electrical composite part. Additionally, fluidity tests are carried out to identify the flow behavior of the melted composite during the polymer injection process. Finally, the cracking resistance is assessed by riveting tests performed on the considered electrical parts produced from composites with different GF reinforcement. The riveting test stems directly from the manufacturing process. Therefore, its results accurately reflect the fragility of the material used.

As artificial marble is abundant and widely used in residential and commercial fields, the resource utilization of artificial marble wastes (AMWs) has become extremely important in order to protect the environment. In this paper, polybutylene terephthalate/artificial marble wastes (PBT/AMWs) composites were prepared by melt blending to maximize resource utilization and increase PBT performance. The research results showed that the filling of AMWs was beneficial to the improvement of PBT-related performance. X-ray diffraction analysis results indicated that after filling AMWs into the PBT matrix, the crystal structure of PBT was not changed. Heat deflection temperature (HDT) analysis results indicated that the HDT of PBT composites with 20 wt% AMWs reached 66.68 °C, which was 9.12 °C higher than that of neat PBT. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis results showed that heterogeneous nucleation could be well achieved when the filling content was 15 wt%; impact and scanning electron microscope analysis results showed that due to the partial core-shell structure of the AMWs, the impact strength of PBT was significantly improved after filling. When the filling amount was 20 wt%, the impact strength of the PBT composites reached 23.20 kJ/m2, which was 17.94 kJ/m2 higher than that of neat PBT. This research will not only provide new insights into the efficient and high-value utilization of AMWs, but also provide a good reference for improved applications of other polymers.

AbstractNaturally occurring nipagin and eugenol were used as the collaborative starting materials for poly(ether ester) polymers. In this study, two series of nipagin and eugenol-derived copoly(ether ester)s, PHN11−xE1x and PHN11−xE2x (x = 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%), were prepared with renewable 1,6-hexanediol as a comonomer. The nipagin-derived component acts as the renewable surrogate of petroleum-based dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), while the eugenol-derived component acts as the cooperative property modifier of parent homopoly(ether ester) PHN1. 1,6-Hexanediol was chosen as the spacer because of its renewability, high boiling point, and short chain to enhance the glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of materials. The molecular weights and chemical structures were confirmed by gel permeation chromatograph (GPC), NMR and FTIR spectroscopies. Thermal and crystalline properties were studied by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD). The tensile assays were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties. The results suggested that properties of this kind of poly(ether ester)s could be finely tuned by the relative content of two components for the desired applications (elastomer, rubbery) suitable for different scenarios from polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT).

Injection molding is a common process for manufacturing thermoplastic polymers. Preconnected to fabrication, mechanically loaded parts are examined in structural simulation. A crucial prerequisite for a valid structural simulation for any material is the underlying material data. To determine this data, different phenomena must be considered such as influences of load type, strain rate, environmental conditions and in case of fiber reinforced materials the fiber orientation (FO) in the considered area. Because of rheological effects, injection molded parts often possess a non-homogeneous FO distribution. This makes it challenging to create testing plates for specimen extraction with a well-defined FO over thickness and width in the considered area. In this paper, a novel testing part is introduced with an unidirectionally oriented testable area. It shows a FO degree of more than 0.75, which has been validated with μ-CT measurement and two thermoplastic materials: polyamide and polybutylene terephthalate, both reinforced with 30 weight percent of short glass fibers. In order to resolve influences of the already addressed FO distribution in injection molded parts, tensile test specimens need to be extracted out of specially designed plates via milling and cannot be injection molded directly. Experiments were carried out to study possible effects of preparation on the mechanical properties of specimens with both materials and two milling parameter sets. The first milling parameter set creates reproducible surface roughnesses, whereas the second parameter set shows a correlation between FO and roughness value: when milling perpendicularly to the main FO lower roughnesses are reached than milling in fiber direction. Uncertainties of the normalized rupture strain from orthogonally extracted specimens seem to be larger than the values from those extracted in fiber direction.

A multiplex assay based on a low-density hydrogel microarray was developed to identify genomic substitutions in N. gonorrhoeae that determine resistance to the currently recommended treatment agents ceftriaxone and azithromycin and the previously used drugs penicillin, tetracycline, and ciprofloxacin. The microarray identifies 74 drug resistance determinants in the N. gonorrhoeae penA, ponA, porB, gyrA, parC, rpsJ, mtrR, blaTEM, tetM, and 23S rRNA genes. The hydrogel elements were formed by automated dispensing of nanoliter-volume droplets followed by UV-induced copolymerization of NH2-containing oligonucleotides with gel-forming monomers. Polybutylene terephthalate plates without special modifications were used as microarray substrates. Sequences and concentrations of immobilized oligonucleotides, gel composition, and hybridization conditions were carefully selected, and the median discrimination ratio ranged from 2.8 to 29.4, allowing unambiguous identification of single-nucleotide substitutions. The mutation identification results in a control sample of 180 N. gonorrhoeae isolates were completely consistent with the Sanger sequencing results. In total, 648 clinical N. gonorrhoeae isolates obtained in Russia during the last 5 years were analyzed and genotyped using these microarrays. The results allowed us to draw conclusions about the present situation with antimicrobial susceptibility of N. gonorrhoeae in Russia and demonstrated the possibility of using hydrogel microarrays to control the spread of antibiotic resistance.
