A Multi-Dwell Temperature Profile Design for the Cure of Thick CFRP Composite Laminates

Abstract This paper develops a multi-objective optimization method for the cure of thick composite laminates. The purpose is to minimize the cure time and maximum temperature overshoot in the cure process by designing the cure temperature profile. This method combines the finite element based thermo-chemical coupled cure simulation with the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). In order to investigate the influence of the number of dwells on the optimization result, four-dwell and two-dwell temperature profiles are selected for the design variables. The optimization method obtains successfully the Pareto optimal front of the multi-objective problem in thick and ultra-thick laminates. The result shows that the cure time and maximum temperature overshoot are both reduced significantly. The optimization result further illustrates that the four-dwell cure profile is more e ective than the two-dwell, especially for the ultra-thick laminates. Through the optimization of the four-dwell profile, the cure time is reduced by 51.0% (thick case) and 30.3% (ultra-thick case) and the maximum temperature overshoot is reduced by 66.9% (thick case) and 73.1% (ultra-thick case) compared with the recommended cure profile. In addition, Self-organizing map (SOM) is employed to visualize the relationships between the design variables with respect to the optimization result.

Lightweight design is one of the important ways to reduce automobile fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. At the same time, the fatigue life of automobile parts also greatly affects vehicle safety. This paper proposes a multi-objective reliability optimization method by integrating Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) with the NSGA-II algorithm coupled with entropy weighted grey relational analysis (GRA) for lightweight design of the lower control arm of automobile Macpherson suspension. The dynamic load histories of the control arm were extracted through dynamic simulations of a rigid-flexible coupling vehicle model on virtual proving ground. Then, the nominal stress method was used to predict its fatigue life. Six design variables were defined to describe the geometric dimension of the control arm, while mass and fatigue life were taken as optimization objectives. The multi-objective optimization design of the control arm was carried out based on the Kriging surrogate model and NSGA-II algorithm. Aiming at the uncertainty of design variables, the reliability constraint was added to the multi-objective optimization to improve the reliability of the fatigue life of the control arm. The optimal design of the control arm was determined from Pareto solutions by entropy weighted grey relational analysis (GRA). The optimization results show that the mass of the control arm was reduced by 4.1% and the fatigue life was increased by 215.8% while its reliability increased by 7.8%. The proposed multi-objective reliability optimization method proved to be feasible and effective for lightweight design of a suspension control arm.

In this paper, a kind of multi-objective trajectory optimization method based on non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) is proposed for free-floating space manipulator. The aim is to optimize the motion path of the space manipulator with joint angle constraints and joint velocity constraints. Firstly, the kinematics and dynamics model are built. Secondly, the 3-5-3 piecewise polynomial is selected as interpolation method for trajectory planning of joint space. Thirdly, three objective functions are established to simultaneously minimize execution time, energy consumption and jerk of the joints. At last, the objective functions are combined with the NSGA-II algorithm to get the Pareto optimal solution set. The effectiveness of the mentioned method is verified by simulations.

Arriving optimal solutions is one of the important tasks in engineering design. Many real-world design optimization problems involve multiple conflicting objectives. The design variables are of continuous or discrete in nature. In general, for solving Multi Objective Optimization methods weight method is preferred. In this method, all the objective functions are converted into a single objective function by assigning suitable weights to each objective functions. The main drawback lies in the selection of proper weights. Recently, evolutionary algorithms are used to find the nondominated optimal solutions called as Pareto optimal front in a single run. In recent years, Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) finds increasing applications in solving multi objective problems comprising of conflicting objectives because of low computational requirements, elitism and parameter-less sharing approach. In this work, we propose a methodology which integrates NSGA-II and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) for solving a two bar truss problem. NSGA-II searches for the Pareto set where two bar truss is evaluated in terms of minimizing the weight of the truss and minimizing the total displacement of the joint under the given load. Subsequently, TOPSIS selects the best compromise solution.

High-efficiency taxiing for safe operations is needed by all types of aircraft in busy airports to reduce congestion and lessen fuel consumption and carbon emissions. This task is a challenge in the operation and control of the airport’s surface. Previous studies on the optimization of aircraft taxiing on airport surfaces have rarely integrated waiting constraints on the taxiway into the multi-objective optimization of taxiing time and fuel emissions. Such studies also rarely combine changes to the airport’s environment (such as airport elevation, field pressure, temperature, etc.) with the multi-objective optimization of aircraft surface taxiing. In this study, a multi-objective optimization method for aircraft taxiing on an airport surface based on the airport’s environment and traffic conflicts is proposed. This study aims to achieve a Pareto optimized taxiing scheme in terms of taxiing time, fuel consumption, and pollutant emissions. This research has the following contents: (1) Previous calculations of aircraft taxiing pathways on the airport’s surface have been based on unimpeded aircraft taxiing. Waiting on the taxiway is excluded from the multi-objective optimization of taxiing time and fuel emissions. In this study, the waiting points were selected, and the speed curve was optimized. A multi-objective optimization scheme under aircraft taxiing obstacles was thus established. (2) On this basis, the fuel flow of different aircraft engines was modified with consideration to the aforementioned environmental airport differences, and a multi-objective optimization scheme for aircraft taxiing under different operating environments was also established. (3) A multi-objective optimization of the taxiing time and fuel consumption of different aircraft types was realized by acquiring their parameters and fuel consumption indexes. A case study based on the Shanghai Pudong International Airport was also performed in the present study. The taxiway from the 35R runway to the 551# stand in the Shanghai Pudong International Airport was optimized by the non-dominant sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II). The taxiing time, fuel consumption, and pollutant emissions at this airport were compared with those of the Kunming Changshui International Airport and Lhasa Gonggar International Airport, which have different airport environments. Our research conclusions will provide the operations and control departments of airports a reference to determine optimal taxiing schemes.

This paper proposes a model predictive control method based on dynamic multi-objective optimization algorithms (MPC_CPDMO-NSGA-II) for reducing freeway congestion and relieving environment impact simultaneously. A new dynamic multi-objective optimization algorithm based on clustering and prediction with NSGA-II (CPDMO-NSGA-II) is proposed. The proposed CPDMO-NSGA-II algorithm is used to realize on-line optimization at each control step in model predictive control. The performance indicators considered in model predictive control consists of total time spent, total travel distance, total emissions and total fuel consumption. Then TOPSIS method is adopted to select an optimal solution from Pareto front obtained from MPC_CPDMO-NSGA-II algorithm and is applied to the VISSIM environment. The control strategies are variable speed limit (VSL) and ramp metering (RM). In order to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, the proposed algorithm is tested under the simulation environment originated from a real freeway network in Shanghai with one on-ramp. The result is compared with fixed speed limit strategy and single optimization method respectively. Simulation results show that it can effectively alleviate traffic congestion, reduce emissions and fuel consumption, as compared with fixed speed limit strategy and classical model predictive control method based on single optimization method.

A new and effective elastic constants identification technique is presented to extract the elastic constants of a composite laminate subjected to uniaxial tensile testing. The proposed technique consists of a new multi-level optimization method that can solve different types of minimization problems, including the extraction of material constants of composite laminates from given strains. In the identification process, the optimization problem is solved by using a stochastic multi-start dynamic search minimization algorithm at the first level in order to obtain the statistics of the quasi-optimal design variables for a set of randomly generated starting points. The statistics of the quasi-optimal elastic constants obtained at this level are used to determine the reduced feasible region in order to formulate the second-level optimization problem. The second-level optimization problem is then solved using the particle swarm algorithm in order to obtain the statistics of the new quasi-optimal elastic constants. The iteration process between the first and second levels of optimization continues until the standard deviations of the quasi-optimal design variables at any level of optimization are less than the prescribed values. The proposed multi-level optimization method, as well as several existing global optimization algorithms, is used to solve a number of well-known mathematical minimization problems to verify the accuracy of the method. For the adopted numerical examples, it has been shown that the proposed method is more efficient and effective than the adopted global minimization algorithms to produce the exact solutions. The proposed method is then applied to identify four elastic constants of a [0°/±45°]s composite laminate using three strains in 0°, 45°, and 90° directions, respectively, of the composite laminate subjected to uniaxial testing. For comparison purposes, several existing global minimization techniques are also used to solve the elastic constants identification problem. Again, it has been shown that the proposed method is capable of producing more accurate results than the adopted available methods. Finally, experimental data are used to demonstrate the applications of the proposed method.

This paper presents the development of multi-objective population-based optimization method, called Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II), to optimize the aerodynamic characteristic of a low Reynolds number airfoil. The optimization is performed by changing the shape of the airfoil to obtain geometry with the best aerodynamic characteristics. The results of the study show that the developed optimization tool, coupled with modified PARSEC parameterization, has yielded optimum airfoils with better aerodynamic characteristics compared to original airfoil. Additionally, it is found that the developed method has better performance compared to similar methods found in literature.

This work tends to deal with the multi-objective dynamic optimization problem of a three translational degrees of freedom parallel robot. Two global dynamic indices are proposed as the objective functions for the dynamic optimization: the index of dynamic dexterity, the index describing the dynamic fluctuation effects. The length of the linkages and the circumradius of the platforms were chosen as the design variables. A multi-objective optimal design problem, including constrains on the actuating and passive joint angle limits and geometrical interference is then formulated to find the Pareto solutions for the robot in a desired workspace. The Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) is adopted to solve the constrained nonlinear multi-objective optimization problem. The simulation results obtained shows that the robot can achieve better dynamic dexterity and less dynamic fluctuation simultaneously after the optimization.

The working parameters of the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator were optimized to gain an understanding of the flow control mechanism. Experiments were conducted at a Reynolds number of 63,000 using a NACA 0015 airfoil which was fixed to the stall angle of 12 degrees. The two objective functions are: 1) power consumption (P) and 2) lift coefficient (Cl). The goal of the optimization is to decrease P while maximizing Cl. The design variables consist of input power parameters. The algorithm was run for 10 generations with a total population of 260 solutions. Although the number of generations and population size was limited due to experimental constraints, the algorithm was able to converge and the approximate Pareto-front was obtained. From the objective function space, we observe a relatively linear trend where Cl increases with P and after a certain threshold, the value of Cl seems to saturate. We discuss the results obtained in the objective space in addition to scatter plot matrix and color maps. This article, with its experiment-based approach, demonstrates the robustness of a Multi-Objective Design Optimization method and its feasibility for wind tunnel experiments.

Aiming at the problem that the downtime is simply assumed to be constant and the limited resources are not considered in the current selective maintenance of the series-parallel system, a three-objective selective maintenance model for the series-parallel system is established to minimize the maintenance cost, maximize the probability of completing the next task and minimize the downtime. The maintenance decision-making model and personnel allocation model are combined to make decisions on the optimal length of each equipment’s rest period, the equipment to be maintained during the rest period and the maintenance level. For the multi-objective model established, the NSGA-III algorithm is designed to solve the model. Comparing with the NSGA-II algorithm that only considers the first two objectives, it is verified that the designed multi-objective model can effectively reduce the downtime of the system.
