Abstract Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3 ceramic fibers were synthesized via the precursor linear self-assembly nonhydrolytic sol-gel (NHSG) method, taking TiCl4 as the titanium source, anhydrous barium acetate and strontium acetate as the barium source and strontium source, anhydrous ethanol and glycol as the oxygen donor and solvent, respectively. The NHSG method promotes the formation of Ba–O–Ti and Sr–O–Ti through heterogeneous condensation. The bimolecular association structure of the reaction intermediate (chlorotitanium ethoxide) between ethanol and titanium tetrachloride facilitates the self-linear assembly of precursors. It also enables linear colloidal particle formation and excellent spinnability of the sol. The novel Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3 ceramic fibers would promote the flexibility of electronic products.

TiO2nanopowders were synthesized by non-hydrolytic sol−gel synthesis and solvothermal method. Effects of the type of alcohol on the properties of TiO2nanopowders were investigated. XRD and FSEM were used to characterize TiO2nanopowders. The results showed that TiO2nanopowders with diameters of about 50nm and micro-spheres with diameters of about 400~500nm were obtained by non-hydrolytic sol−gel synthesis, when ethanol and isopropanol were used as oxygen donor and solvent, respectively. TiO2prepared with ethanol by non-hydrolytic sol−gel synthesis and calcined at 700°C consisted only 3.8% rutile phase. After solvothermal synthesis, TiO2nanopowders with diameters of about 50nm were obtained when ethanol and isopropanol were used as the oxygen donor. However, submicrometer spheres with uniform size distribution were obtained with 1-octanol.

Magnesium aluminate (MgAl2O4) spinel nanoparticles were prepared by non-hydrolytic sol-gel method using anhydrous alcohols as oxygen donor. XRD and FTIR were used to characterise the effect of anhydrous alcohols on synthesis of MgAl2O4 spinel nanoparticles. The results showed that when the oxygen donor used in stoichiometric ratio for synthesizing MgAl2O4, anhydrous ethanol was the more effective oxygen donor than anhydrous isopropanol. But there was no remarkable effect on synthesis of MgAl2O4 spinel when the amount of anhydrous ethanol exceeded the stoichiometric ratio. The mean particle size MgAl2O4 spinel nanoparticles was in the range of 40 to 50 nm.

ABSTRACTMesoporous Hybrid Thin Films (MHTF) of a variety of compositions and embedded organic functions are produced by combining sol-gel synthesis, template self-assembly and surface modification. One-pot or post-grafting strategies permit to modify the pore surface behavior. Highly controlled MHTF issued from a reproducible and modular synthesis can be used as building blocks for more complex structures, presenting order at larger scales, and novel properties derived from this multiscale order. Multilayer stacks of MHTF presenting specific and different functions and frameworks located in a well-defined position have been produced by combining sequential film deposition, selective functionalization and dissolution. These systems present new properties such as localized chemistry or modulable photonic crystal behavior.
