We consider the results of studies on the choice of material of the lower radial bearing of the pump, designed to circulate the coolant lead – bismuth. The circulation of the liquid coolant is provided by a vertical axial pump having a “long” shaft. In this design it is necessary to provide for the lower bearing the lubrication carried out with lead – bismuth coolant. Having analyzed the operating conditions of the axial pump, we decided to carry out the lower bearing in accordance with the scheme of a hydrodynamic sliding bearing. The materials of friction pairs in such a bearing must withstand the stresses arising from the operation of the pump, as well as the aggressive conditions of the coolant. Non-metallic materials – ceramics and carbon-based composite materials – were selected basing on the study of literature data for experimental research on the corrosion and heat resistance in the lead-bismuth environment.

AbstractInvestigation of the flow properties of materials containing rigid reinforcements has been prompted by various technological challenges concerned with high specific strength composites. The materials of interest range from metallic materials such as Al alloys, to ceramic materials such as Si3N4 and also include the intermetallics: TiAl and MoSi2. The reinforcements are typically A12O3 and SiC. The strengths of interest may be the flow strength at ambient temperature or the creep strength. The present analysis constitutes an attempt to provide estimates of either the flow or creep strength for matrices that exhibit power law deformation.

A new class of metallic materials, so-called “high-entropy alloys” (HEAs), was under review. Various definitions of these alloys are given, their main differences from the conventional alloys are indicated and the dynamics of publications in the period from the first publications in 2004 to the end of 2020 are presented. It is noted the almost exponential growth of the article numbers concerning these alloys, and the main reasons of such high interest are discussed. Experimental results of development the radiation-tolerant materials based on the concept of high-entropy alloys and study of the radiation damage mechanisms are summarised.

For years of time there have been conducted the investigations of gas-turbine engine parts made of carbon-carbon and ceramic materials. This paper presents mainly the results of works done to create engine components of ceramic materials. There are given the investigation results on development of equipment and methods intended for use in determining the characteristics of heat-resistant non-metallic materials under ultra high temperature conditions. The unique tooling is developed to be used for conducting mechanical tests in different conditions (vacuum, protective medium, air) at temperatures up to 2200°C. There are considered three possible fields of application of ceramic materials, that are, turbine (1), combustion chamber and other stator components operating at high temperatures (2), bearings (3). Different ceramic elements are designed and manufactured, their structural strength is investigated in the laboratory faculties and also as part of engine gas generators.

Additive manufacturing is a rapid manufacturing based on discrete accumulation to achieve prototypes or parts of products. Inorganic non-metallic materials, as one of the three major materials, have incomparable application prospect in medical, aerospace, automotive, construction, arts and crafts, as well as many other fields. In order to rapidly create devices with arbitrarily complex shapes, additive manufacturing of inorganic non-metallic materials is becoming a hot spot of current research. In view of the technical types, materials and other aspects, this article introduced research status and development of additive manufacturing in inorganic non-metallic materials at home and abroad. Several common inorganic non-metallic materials are compared and analyzed, such as Al2O3, Si3N4 SiO2, ZrO2, etc. The forming characteristics and the problems of several popular ceramic materials and sand–casting materials are illustrated with emphases. The key problems existed in additive manufacturing forming process of inorganic non-metallic material are pointed out and urgent to be solved at present. Furthermore, the impacts of the material handling process, three dimensional printing (3DP), Selective Laser Sintering(SLS), Selective Laser Melting (SLM) three-dimensional forming processes and post treatment process on the quality and performance of the forming parts are analyzed. Finally, the prospects in SLS of the gem material are put forward.
