The paper presents research results emerging from the analysis of Intelligent Personal Assistants (IPA) log data. Based on the assump­tion that media and data, as part of practice, are produced and used cooperatively, the paper discusses how IPA log data can be used to analyze (1) how the IPA systems operate through their connection to platforms and infrastructures, (2) how the dialog systems are de­signed today and (3) how users integrate them into their everyday social interaction. It also asks in which everyday practical contexts the IPA are placed on the system side and on the user side, and how privacy issues in particular are negotiated. It is argued that, in order to be able to investigate these questions, the technical-institutional and the cultural-theoretical perspective on media, which is common in German media linguistics, has to be complemented by a more fun­damental, i.e. social-theoretical and interactionist perspective.

This paper studies the usability methodologies for spoken dialogue web interfaces along with the appropriate designer-needs analysis. The work unfolds a theoretical perspective to the methods that are extensively used and provides a framework description for creating and testing usable content and applications for conversational interfaces. The main concerns include the design issues for usability testing and evaluation during the development lifecycle, the basic customer experience metrics and the problems that arise after the deployment of real-life systems. Through the discussion of the evaluation and testing methods, this paper argues on the importance and the potential of wizard-based functional assessment and usability testing for deployed systems, presenting an appropriate environment as part of an integrated development framework.

This thesis examines the understandings and meanings of personal blogging from the perspective of blog authors. The theoretical framework draws on a symbolic interactionist perspective, focusing on how meaning is constructed through blogging practices, supplemented by theories of mediation and critical technology studies. The principal evidence in this study is derived from an analysis of in-depth interviews with bloggers selected to maximise their diversity based on the results of an initial survey. This is supplemented by an analysis of personal blogging’s technical contexts and of various societal influences that appear to influence blogging practices.Bloggers were found to have limited interest in gathering information about their readers, appearing to rely instead on an assumption that readers are sympathetic. Although personal blogging practices have been framed as being a form of radically free expression, they were also shown to be subject to potential biases including social norms and the technical characteristics of blogging services. Blogs provide a persistent record of a blogger’s practice, but the bloggers in this study did not generally read their archives or expect others to do so, nor did they retrospectively edit their archives to maintain a consistent self-presentation.The empirical results provide a basis for developing a theoretical perspective to account for blogging practices. This emphasises firstly that a blogger’s construction of the meaning of their practice can be based as much on an imagined and desired social context as it is on an informed and reflexive understanding of the communicative situation. Secondly, blogging practices include a variety of envisaged audience relationships, and some blogging practices appear to be primarilyself-directed with potential audiences playing a marginal role. Blogging’s technical characteristics and the social norms surrounding blogging practices appear to enable and reinforce this unanticipated lack of engagement with audiences. This perspective contrasts with studies of computer mediated communication that suggest bloggers would monitor their audiences and present themselves strategically to ensure interactions are successful in their terms. The study also points the way towards several avenues for further research including a more in-depth consideration of the neglected structural factors (both social and technical) which potentially influence blogging practices, and an examination of social network site use practices using a similar analytical approach.

This paper describes and analyzes the state of research in Voice User Interfaces (VUIs) in Latin America based on the review of scientific documents published in SCOPUS from 1999 to June 2020, through a bibliometric analysis. We analyzed 419 academic papers. Although a gradual increase is observed over the years, the number of published documents has increased considerably since 2014. Brazil (44%) and Mexico (28%) are the countries with more documents published. Co-authorship occurs between Latin American countries (Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Ecuador, and Costa Rica). However, the mayor collaboration from Latin American countries occurs with the United States, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Japan. The main researched topics are studies of automatic speech recognition, artificial intelligence, speech processing, and human-computer interaction, which have grown over the past few years. Natural language processing, conversational agents, user experience, and chatbots are keywords related to more recent studies. Our analysis reveals that the primary active research developed in the short-term future are personal assistants and assistive technology using voice user interfaces.

BACKGROUND Anxiety and depression are amongst the most commonly prevalent mental health disorders (CMDs) worldwide. Chatbot apps can play an important role in relieving anxiety and depression. Users’ reviews of chatbot apps are considered an important source of data to explore users’ opinion and satisfaction of chatbot apps. OBJECTIVE This study aims to explore users’ opinions, satisfaction, and attitudes about anxiety and depression chatbot apps through conducting a thematic analysis of users’ reviews of 11 anxiety and depression chatbot apps collected from Google play and Apple store. In addition, we propose a workflow to provide a methodological approach for future analysis of review comments. METHODS We analyzed 205,881 user review comments from chatbots dedicated for users with anxiety and depression symptoms. Using scrapper tools (Google Play Scraper and App Store Scraper python libraries), we extracted text and metadata. The reviews were divided into positive and negative meta themes, based on users rating per review. We analysed the reviews using word frequencies of bigrams (words in pair).A topic modelling technique, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) was applied to identify topics in the reviews, and analysed for detecting themes and subthemes. RESULTS A thematic analysis was conducted on 5 topics for each sentimental set. Reviews were categorized as either positive or negative. For positive reviews, the main themes were confidence and affirmation building, adequate analysis, and consultation, caring as a friend, and easy to use. Whereas for negative reviews results revealed the following themes: usability issues, update Issues, Privacy and Non-creative conversation. CONCLUSIONS Chatbots appear to have the ability to provide users suffering from anxiety and depression feel confident and give them support via a tool that is easy to use, low cost, containing adequate symptom detection whilst providing feeling of having a close friend to converse with. Users tend to dislike technical and privacy issues. Users expect engaging and creative conversations via appealing user interfaces.
