THE recipient of the Clifford G. Grulee Award of the American Academy of Pediatrics for 1965 is Clarence H. Webb of Shreveport, Louisiana. Born in Shreveport in 1902, Dr. Webb was graduated from Tulane University in 1923 and received his M.D. degree from the same university in 1925. Later—in 1931—he received the M.S. degree in pediatrics from the University of Chicago, where he completed a residency at the Bobs Roberts Hospital. Previously he had a year of residency at the University of Minnesota Hospital. Dr. Webb has been in the private practice of pediatrics in Shreveport since 1931. He has also been visiting lecturer at the Tulane School of Medicine since 1947 and professor of pediatrics in the Postgraduate School of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine since 1956. In addition, he finds time to lecture at the Northwestern College of Nursing in Natchitoches. He holds staff appointments at four private hospitals in the Shreveport area and is chief of pediatrics at Confederate Memorial Hospital. Dr. Webb is a member of a number of medical organizations and has served as president of the Louisiana and Shreveport Pediatric Societies, as well as president of the Shreveport Medical Society. He has been active in many local, state, and national organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America, the Louisiana Public Health Association, from which he received its annual award in 1957; the American Anthropological Association, and the Society for American Archeology. Dr. Webb served as president of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1962-1963, previously serving as a member of the Executive Board and as chairman of District VIII. These services were outstanding and important.

This paper describes three alternative architectural studio teaching models taught by the authors at the University of Minnesota and at Stanford University. The three models attempt to build independent and collaborative capacity in students and to emphasize iterative components of the design process. Collectively, the models reflect the authors’ shared conviction that studio education is quite pliable and available to a wide variety of changes in approach and methods.The three models discussed in this paper are the Harkness model, the Exchanges in the Thick Middle and Shifting Allegiances. The Harkness model was implemented and tested in early undergraduate studios at Stanford University. Exchanges in the Thick Middle and the Shifting Allegiances studios, studio pedagogy based in play frameworks of “movement, change, alternation, succession, association and separations” (Srivastava and Christenson 2018), have been tested at the University of Minnesota and North Dakota State University in both undergraduate and graduate studios. All three models are briefly introduced in this paper, followed by a description of the typical day and a typical review in the studios. The conclusions section briefly outlines the overlaps and differences in the three models.

The original Assignment Calculator from the University of Minnesota is a free open-source tool which helps students manage time and organize the steps of a research project.1 It provides a schedule and timeline for each step, and includes tips and outside links to more information. The head of instruction and outreach services in the Henry Madden Library recognized the value of this popular tool, but felt we could expand on its potential for students and faculty here at California State University-Fresno. Charcoal rot was first observed on sunflower in North and South Dakota in 1998, and was widespread on soybeans recently in Iowa, suggesting that Macrophomina may becoming more common in cooler growing areas of Midwestern United States. With the multitude of Macrophomina hosts in the northern Great Plains and the high incidence of microsclerotia we detected in soil, high disease potential may exist, suggesting that in drier, hotter years the sunflower crop may be affected by this disease. Abstract Ponderosa pine has been planted extensively in the northern Great Plains. Many of the plantings, however, have performed poorly or failed because of poor early survival and slow growth. A regional provenance test of 73 ponderosa pine sources was established in 1968 as one means of improving the performance of this species throughout the Great Plains. Results after 15 years indicated that three sources located in north central Nebraska and south central South Dakota were taller than all other sources. The three sources exhibited a height growth 30% above the plantation mean and an average survival 20% higher than that of the plantation as a whole. These sources have also been among the tallest and best survivors in similar tests throughout the Great Plains. Juvenile-mature correlations were strong for 5-year and 15-year height growth. The identification of a relatively small area from which to collect genetically improved ponderosa pine should greatly facilitate the incorporation of these seedlings into tree-planting efforts in the northern Plains.
