Pile foundation settlement might cause a disastrous consequence to an in-service pressure pipeline. Flaws, which are unavoidable in the pipeline, lead to reduction of load-supporting capability and service life of the pipeline. So fracture failure risk analysis of in-service pressure pipeline is important in engineering. Failure probability of pipeline due to pile foundation settlement is computed by using the well-known safety assessment procedure R6. Three-moment equation is adopted to compute bending moment in the condition of n piles, where n is the number of piles. A numerical example was presented to illustrate the application of fracture failure risk analysis to determine the failure probability of the pressure pipeline, considering the uncertainties in various internal operating loadings and external forces, flaw sizes, material fracture toughness and flow stress. Furthermore, the failure probabilities of each defect and the whole pipeline were obtained.

Abstract. Syria has been struggling through a continuous conflict for more than nine years so far. This conflict has had a disastrous consequence, for not only Syria urban areas but also its world heritage and historical sites. Moreover, the ongoing conflict resulted in the displacement of over 13 million people that is more than half the population; including more than 6.1 million internally displaced. This long-term encampment is a growing aspect of a growing refugee crisis. The Syrian refugees have to face another crisis in the camps due to a significant shortage of resources and support. One solution was using earthen buildings that have been a traditional architectural style in Syria for 11 thousand years. As a part of the cultural heritage, it depends on community participation and achieves environmental and economic efficiency in addition to preserving memory and identity of the place. This paper discusses the creation of sustainable shelters through the revival of heritage vernacular earthen architecture in northern Syria. A comparative analysis was conducted between the humanitarian agencies shelters (HAS) and different historical vernacular dwellings (HDS) from the same region with an arid steppe climate (hot summer and a short cold winter); they were modelled in numerical thermal simulations framework as a means to assess the shelters’ building energy demand and indoor comfort quality. The comparison resulted in the superiority of the heritage dwelling. The paper is concluded with passive approach optimization to the different historical earthen domes with consideration of the historical characteristics and background.

Warum wir uns mit N.F.S. Grundtvigsidealismus-kritischen Abhandlungen beschäftigenBy Horst NägeleHorst Nägele begins his article with the statement that circumstantial evidence suggests that the democratic credibility of the Federal Republic of Germany may be questioned. Nägele argues for this view by comparing social conventions in Scandinavia and Germany. He adduces historical material to support his theory of a cultural difference on this point. The criticism levelled by the poet Jens Baggesen at the High German language for its remoteness from reality, is dealt with first. Then follows a discussion of the similar criticism by Grundtvig of the idealistic German philosophy, which, according to Grundtvig, is linked up with the Imperialist inclinations of Germany. Hence Germany’s propensity to .litism which finds expression in the New High German literary language as well as in philosophy. In Grundtvig’s view, the connection between the litist, and therefore Imperialist, unitary culture of Germany and the idealistic philosophy manifests itself in the detachment from reality that is characteristic of Schelling’s philosophy. When Schelling talks about the I that embodies itself, it becomes the image of nothing perceiving itself, in contrast to an I attached to a body. Grundtvig also finds evidence of this German tendency towards a missing sense of reality in Schiller’s poetical works. On a close examination of Grundtvig’s writings, it will appear that Friedrich Schiller’s (quasi-idealistic) tragedies are as a whole seen to convey the notion of heroes being (lifeless) shadows, easily killed. For Schiller’s higher, moral human nature, determined by liberty, cannot conquer death; in Grundtvig’s view, only the spirit of history can do that. Grundtvig’s view of life contrasts, for instance, with Schiller’s drama Wallenstein, where the protagonist chooses of his own free will to submit to death and evil. After discussing Grundtvig’s interpretation of Schiller’s dramas, Nägele returns to Schelling’s philosophy as an example of a tendency in German idealism. As Grundtvig understood it, life depends on truth. Grundtvig attaches importance to immediate actuality (‘fundamental and ultimate reality’) as it is the prerequisite for the conception that the ideal is the cause of .all temporal reality.. Grundtvig’s attitude contrasts sharply with what he calls the delusive view of the German idealistic philosophers who despise the body and annihilate life in order to idolize an egocentric construct, with the disastrous consequence that life doesn’t count. Thus Schelling mixes good with evil, truth with falsehood, since the absolute ideal, reason perceiving itself, is given the highest priority, i.e. preceding reality. According to Grundtvig, what is ideal, what is possible, always depends on reality, on what is real. In Grundtvig’s view, truth can only be perceived by man in his life on earth in contradistinction to falsehood; therefore it is impossible to identify the divine perception of the eternal truth and the human recognition of truth. This is the main line of thought in Grundtvig’s criticism of Schelling’s philosophy. It is Nägele’s argument that this criticism is highly topical since it is reflected in the debate over morals today, in the endeavours to create dignified social conventions, and in the complex issue of the future character of the European community as either a union or a loose cooperative structure.

Just over twelve years ago, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) published the Culture, trade and globalization: questions and answers. In the book, the first ever definition of ‘cultural industries’ is applied to ‘those industries that combine the creation, production and commercialization of contents that are intangible and cultural in nature. These contents are typically protected by copyright and they can take the form of goods or services.’ Cultural creations need guiding and checking on, and that is the reason why there is art director or creative director, so-called the ‘gate-keeper’, controlling over the quality of creations. If a gate-keeper builds a safeguard in the cultural creative behavior, lacking the check on the legal protection in the cultural creative industries, and whether the information of cultural industry element has touched on the question of the intellectual property rights infringement, then it will result in a disastrous consequence. This is the topic which the article researches on.

Abstract von Willebrand factor (VWF) released from endothelium is ultralarge (UL) and hyperreactive. If released directly into plasma, it can spontaneously aggregate platelets, resulting in systemic thrombosis. This disastrous consequence is prevented by the ADAMTS13 (ADisintegrin and Metalloprotease with ThromboSpondin motif) cleavage of ULVWF into smaller, less active forms. We previously showed that ULVWF, on release, forms extremely long stringlike structures. ADAMTS13 cleaves these strings under flow significantly faster than it does under static conditions. As ULVWF tethering to endothelium is important for its rapid proteolysis, we investigated 2 molecules for their potential to anchor the ULVWF strings: P-selectin and integrin αvβ3. We demonstrated that P-selectin anchors ULVWF to endothelium by several means. First, Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells expressing P-selectin specifically adhered to immobilized ULVWF and ULVWF-coated beads to immobilized P-selectin. Second, an anti-VWF antibody coimmunoprecipitates P-selectin from the histamine-activated endothelial cells. Third, P-selectin antibody or soluble P-selectin, but not a αvβ3 antibody, RGDS peptide, or heparin, blocked the formation of ULVWF strings. Fourth, P-selectin expression was in clusters predominantly along the ULVWF strings. Finally, the strength of the minimal ULVWF–P-selectin bond was measured to be 7.2 pN. We, therefore, conclude that P-selectin may anchor ULVWF strings to endothelial cells and facilitate their cleavage by ADAMTS13.

AbstractAsking what would have been the case had the Jewish War of 66-70 CE not ended with the destruction of the Temple demonstrates the momentous consequences of those events for the history of Christianity and of anti-Judaism in Western culture. That the war might not have occurred or might have been nipped in the bud is a consensus view of Jewish, Roman and primitive Christian authors. That its consequences fueled a perception of Jews as abominable or rightly abandoned by their own God can be documented in both Roman and Christian texts. But the most disastrous consequence of the events of 66-70 CE was the anti-Judaism which is embedded in the Christian imagination through the canonical Gospels. Their accounts of the divinely authorized breech between followers of Jesus messiah and fellow Jews would never have been credible had moderate Jewish voices quelled the rebellion. Christianity would have remained a Jewish movement which incorporated Gentiles into God's people and anti-Judaism would not have been inscribed on the Western imagination.

Introduction: Tension pneumoperitoneum is rarely encountered in the emergency department but can have disastrous effects on the body when it is. However, an emergency physician has skills that can be readily applied to needle decompress the abdomen for rapid stabilization. Case Report: A 42-year-old male arrived via ambulance after a likely overdose with mental status improvement following naloxone administration. He was found to be in respiratory distress due to a rigid, distended abdomen that required intubation for stabilization. Computed tomography imaging showed significant pneumoperitoneum with tension physiology. Surgery consultation was unable to intervene immediately, and needle decompression with an angiocatheter was performed at the bedside with immediate ventilatory improvement. Conclusion: Tension pneumoperitoneum is a rare but potentially disastrous consequence of overdose secondary to emesis and rupture of the gastric wall. Needle decompression is a skillset already in the emergency physician’s toolbox and can be applied for emergency stabilization of a tension pneumoperitoneum with proper forethought and technique.

Concern regarding the shielding effectiveness (SE) of building materials is gaining more response nowadays due to the awareness on the electromagnetic pollution (EMP) that is believed to results in disastrous consequence. A pure concrete inherently providing certain level of SE but it is not enough. Hence additional shielding and absorbing additives are added into the concrete. In this work MnxZn1-xFe2O4will be added into the pure concrete to enhance its SE performance. The effect of microstructure, compositions, grain sizes, homogeneity, mixture volume of the MnxZn1-xFe2O4will be considered for the optimization in this mixture. The key component to determine the SE of concrete is their electrical characteristic (relative permittivity and relative permeability). The parallel plate which is proposed previously will be used to determine the electrical characteristic of material and it will also be used for SE measurement.
