AbstractVocabulary learning is often assigned as out-of-class learning, which learners need to autonomously initiate and be motivated to sustain. Under such learning modes, though independent learners may need less motivational scaffolding, learners who prefer a more interactive study environment may need to be provided with assistance to boost their motivation. Focusing on such personal determinants, this study examines the role of self-construal in vocabulary learning by employing self-determination theory. The participants were 155 engineering students from a Japanese technical college. Path and mediation analyses were performed based on vocabulary test scores and questionnaire responses. Results revealed that independent self-construal had a significant impact on more self-determined types of both motivation (i.e., intrinsic motivation and identified regulation) and amotivation, but interdependent self-construal was statistically irrelevant to them, in the context of vocabulary learning. Furthermore, perceived autonomy and competence mediated the relationship between independent self-construal and motivation. These findings indicate that vocabulary learning motivation is shaped and regulated by self-construal and may be enhanced through support of the mediators.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of cultural differences and the types of relationship closeness involved in recipients’ emotional and behavioral reactions after receiving disliked gifts. Design/methodology/approach Collecting data from Thailand and the USA, two experiments were conducted in a 2 (self-construal: independent/interdependent) × 2 (relationship closeness: close/distant) between-subjects design. Study 1 explores the recipients’ feelings and reactions upon receipt of a disliked gift. Study 2 explores the disposition process for a disliked gift. Findings The results show that a recipient’s emotions, reaction and disposition process can be affected by cultural differences and relationship closeness: specifically that close and distant relationships moderate the relationship between self-construal and gift-receiving attitudes and behaviors. Research limitations/implications Future research can investigate representative groups from other countries to broaden the generalizability of the findings. Practical implications This understanding can guide gift-givers when selecting gifts for close or distant recipients across cultures. Additionally, it can help retailers develop and introduce new marketing strategies by applying self-construal as a marketing segmentation tool for gift purchase and disposition. Originality/value This research is among the first studies to offer insights into how individuals in different cultures manage disliked gifts they receive from people in either close or distant relationships.

The Portfolio strategies are the effective investment tools pertaining to active and passive investment approaches. This signifies the investor’s inclination of buying and selling the risky and risk-free assets. The research includes four strategies namely buy and hold strategy, dynamic asset allocation, strategic asset allocation and tactical asset allocation along with their dimensions. Strategies based hypothetical portfolios are generated on the basis of 14 years’ stock prices (2005-2017). The annually and monthly risk-adjusted return ratios; Sharpe ratio, Treynor’s measure, CAPM and Jenson Alpha are calculated individually. Simulated annualized portfolios generate significant result with Sharpe and treynor measure. Alpha return is generated with buy and hold if based on growth in stock prices. For empirical result, One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used for studying the relationship between the strategies. Post hoc Tukey’s test is applied to find the difference between the strategies. The ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test for monthly portfolios gives significant results with three measure Sharpe ratio, CAPM and Jenson Alpha. No empirical significant result is measured on the basis of treynor measure.

Acquiring a better understanding of what drives pro-environmental and sustainable behaviour is important for both researchers and practitioners alike. The purpose of this paper is to explore the moderating role of locus of control and self-construal on the relationship between pro-environmental beliefs and pro-environmental consumer behaviour. We explicitly model the endorsement of the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) as a predictor of three specific types of environmental behaviour—travel, purchasing and day to day activities. The results show a positive and significant association between the endorsement of NEP and a person’s pro-environmental traveling behaviour, purchasing behaviour and day to day activities. Moreover, we find that the effects are moderated by a person’s locus of control, specifically, it remains positive and significant only for people with an internal locus of control. However, we found no moderating effect of a person’s self-construal on the association between NEP and pro-environmental behaviour. The findings are important in the continuing work to understand what is limiting consumers to behave according to their beliefs. Practical and theoretical implications of the results as well as suggestions for future research are presented.

Based on persuasion theory, this study examines the influence of peer work performance on the focal employee’s voice-taking relationship. Our study purposes that peer work performance contributes to the focal employee’s cognition-based trust and that their interdependent self-construal moderates this relationship. Our study suggests that cognition-based trust mediates the relationship between peer work performance and the focal employee’s voice taking. Finally, we intend to show that the focal employee’s interdependent self-construal moderates the mediating role of cognition-based trust in transmitting the effect of peer work performance on the focal employee’s voice taking. Analyses of the data collected from China support these hypotheses.
