The phenomena described in this paper, and which the author designates those of recrossed vision , are cases in which objects placed between and very near the eye, such as the two sides of the nose, appear on opposite sides of the sphere of vision: the object on the right side of the nose being seen to the left by the right eye, and that which is on the left of the nose being seen to the right by the left eye. These and other phenomena illustrative of the well-known law by which we estimate the position of objects with relation to the eye to be in a line drawn from its image in the retina through the centre of the eye, are considered by the author as requiring further explanation. Not satisfied with the theory of Berkeley, that the mind is guided by the perceptions received from the sense of touch, in interpreting the signs furnished us by the sight, the author proposes to explain these phenomena by an hypothesis of his own, which he states in the following words. “Over and above the gift of two external or cranial eyes, man has been by his adorable Creator endowed with an internal cerebral organ, which performs the office of a third eye , by being the common recipient of impressions propagated either from one, or both of the external eyes; and the mind, in her chamber of percipience, steers with regard to external objects by the same principle on which the mariner steers by his compass. Thus the two cranial eyes are analogous, in principle and situation, to two magnetic compasses placed upon a ship’s deck; while the third, or cerebral eye, corresponds to another compass placed in the cabin below; and the mind, situated like the captain-mariner in his cabin, knows, from consulting the cerebral eye, on what point of direction the body is steering; although the mind no more perceives either any external object, nor yet any image in the cranial eye, than the mariner perceives (even in the vulgar sense of the word perceiving) the far-off land, or haven, towards which he is surely making his way.”

AbstractIs it the task of legal semiotics or the legal philosophers to define legal semiotics? For the philosopher of law, the question recalls the distinction between philosophers’ philosophy of law and legal scholars’ philosophy of law. The thesis that the paper argues is that a semiotic legal perspective can also be sought from the analysis of anthropological knowledge on the origin of the social bond and society, implying a social and institutional theory of the mind. In the first paragraph, the search for a different kind of rationality emerges from a semiotician, Jürgen Trabant, who analyses semiotically the thought of a rhetorician and philosopher of law, Giambattista Vico. In the second paragraph, the anthropological notion of social bond emerges from the debate on the relationship between the idea of the gift and that of exchange. In the third paragraph, the analysis of the legal notion of thirdness recognizes the central role of myth and fiction in the configuration of the civil world and sign, returning to Vico’s critical view of the philosophy of language as an institution of society.

This paper discusses classical or Pavlovian conditioning, deconditioning, and critical thinking within the context of the human condition and relevant literature. The practical goal of this analysis is to demonstrate how to ‘reprogram’ our thinking from previous, somewhat dysfunctional learning to improve our responsiveness to others and our joy. Becker (2020) defined deconditioning as a systematic self-training process to free oneself from “undesirable desires”–urges and emotions that pop up when we would prefer they did not, thereby making life more stressful. By training oneself to ‘tune out’ these undesirable or distracting desires, one becomes more capable of making and adhering to intentional decisions. Such purposefulness can lead to increased experiences of the pleasures of life emanating from a sense of freedom rather than compulsion (Becker, 2020,p.1). To achieve that goal, this paper explores the important distinctions between conditioning and deconditioning, examining their roles and usefulness in learning generally. In this pursuit, several pertinent articles and books describing conditioning and deconditioning, combined with critical reflection on the researcher’s relevant experiences, are examined to illustrate how people can ‘decondition’ their thinking to stimulate appropriate reasoning for improved learning and memory. Briefly, deconditioning can lead to superior reasoning, resulting in benefits for learning, character development and beyond.

AbstractThe target article by Boyer & Petersen (B&P) contributes a vital message: that people have folk economic theories that shape their thoughts and behavior in the marketplace. This message is all the more important because, in the history of economic thought, Homo economicus was increasingly stripped of mental capacities. Intuitive theories can help restore the mind of Homo economicus.

A “new charts program” for the Americal Association of Variable Star Observers was instigated in 1966 via the gift to the Association of the complete variable star observing records, charts, photographs, etc. of the late Prof. Charles P. Olivier of the University of Pennsylvania (USA). Adequate material covering about 60 variables, not previously charted by the AAVSO, was included in this original data, and was suitably charted in reproducible standard format.Since 1966, much additional information has been assembled from other sources, three Catalogs have been issued which list the new or revised charts produced, and which specify how copies of same may be obtained. The latest such Catalog is dated June 1978, and lists 670 different charts covering a total of 611 variables none of which was charted in reproducible standard form previous to 1966.
