Ambient air pollution and its exposure has been a worldwide issue and can increase the possibility of health risks especially in urban areas of developing countries having the mixture of different air pollution sources. With the increase in population, industrial development and economic prosperity, air pollution is one of the biggest concerns in Pakistan after the occurrence of recent smog episodes. The purpose of this study was to develop a land use regression (LUR) model to provide a better understanding of air exposure and to depict the spatial patterns of air pollutants within the city. Land use regression model was developed for Lahore city, Pakistan using the average seasonal concentration of NO2 and considering 22 potential predictor variables including road network, land use classification and local specific variable. Adjusted explained variance of the LUR models was highest for post-monsoon (77%), followed by monsoon (71%) and was lowest for pre-monsoon (70%). This is the first study conducted in Pakistan to explore the applicability of LUR model and hence will offer the application in other cities. The results of this study would also provide help in promoting epidemiological research in future.

With the rapid and unbalanced development of industry, a large amount of cultivated land is converted into industrial land with lower efficiency. The existing research is extensively concerned with industrial land use and industrial development in isolation, but little attention has been paid to the relationship between them. To help address this gap, the paper creates a new efficiency measure method for industrial land use combining Subvector Data Envelope Analysis (DEA) with spatial analysis approach. The proposed model has been verified by using the industrial land use data of 30 Chinese provinces from 2001 to 2013. The spatial autocorrelation relationship between industrial development and industrial land use efficiency is explored. Furthermore, this paper examines the effects of industrial development on industrial land use efficiency by spatial panel data model. The results indicate that the industrial land use efficiency and the industrial development level in the provinces of eastern region are higher than those of the western region. The spatial distribution of industrial land use efficiency shows remarkable positive spatial autocorrelation. However, the level of industrial development has obvious negative spatial autocorrelation since 2009. The improvement of industrial development has a significant positive impact on the industrial land use efficiency.

Urbanization in Mediterranean Europe has occurred in recent decades with expansion of residential, commercial and industrial settlements into rural landscapes outside the traditional metropolitan boundaries. Industrial expansion in peri-urban contexts was particularly intense in Southern Europe. Based on these premises, this work investigates residential and industrial settlement dynamics in the Valencian Community, Spain, between 2005 and 2015, with the aim to clarify the role of industrial expansion in total urban growth in a paradigmatic Mediterranean region. Since the early 1990s, the Valencian industrial sector developed in correspondence with already established industrial nodes, altering the surrounding rural landscape. Six variables (urban hierarchy, discontinuous settlements, pristine land under urban expansion, isolated industrial settlements, within- and out-of-plan industrial areas) were considered with the aim at exploring land-use change. Empirical results indicate a role of industrial development in pushing urban sprawl in coastal Valencia. A reflection on the distinctive evolution of residential and industrial settlements is essential for designing new planning measures for sustainable land management and containment of urban sprawl in Southern Europe. A comparative analysis of different alternatives of urban development based on quantitative assessment of land-use change provides guidelines for local development and ecological sustainability.

AbstractAn engineering-geological map of the Western Thessaly basin has been compiled, providing a valuable guide to both urban planning and industrial development of the wider area. This map contributes significantly to the optimization of land use and improved planning of technical work. Additionally, the engineering-geological conditions of the formations encountered in the Western Thessaly basin are examined. The formations are grouped into thirteen (13) engineering-geological entities, with regard to their geotechnical behaviour. This entire study was based on both in situ investigations and geotechnical information extracted from 1,039 boreholes.Furthermore, a landslide inventory map of the Western Thessaly basin has been compiled. In addition, the surface subsidence ruptures, due to ground-water overexploitation, have been examined in the eastern part of the study area.

What role does media coverage play in local communities' efforts to assert their stake in contests over urban land use? We focus this question by examining the case of Taylor Yard in Los Angeles, where community activists fought for a decade to avoid industrial development of a 100‐acre parcel of former rail yard in favor of creating much‐needed parkland. We analyze 446 direct quotations from 54 print news stories on the contest over land use at Taylor Yard between 1985 and 2001. We identify whom journalists covering Taylor Yard treated as newsworthy sources, and how rivals employed competing definitions of “the community” and its interests to frame the contest over land use at Taylor Yard. This analysis shows how park advocates' framing of the contest ultimately achieved prominence in print news coverage of Taylor Yard. Our findings suggest the need to rethink previous sociological accounts of the relationships among local news professionals, their favored sources, and coverage of urban development.

Abstract: The industry has a great influence on the economy of Semarang Regency by becoming the largest contributor to Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). The rapid industrial development from 2011-2017 has an impact on the decrease of agricultural land area, besides that industrial development has implication on land use mismatch of Spatial Plan. This study describes the results of descriptive qualitative analysis with spatial approach from the impact of industrial development on land use change and land use suitability for industry in 2017 against Spatial Plan. The analysis shows that, first, the impact of industrial development on land use change in Semarang regency in 2011-2017 resulted in the amount of agricultural land decreased by 253,32 Ha. The biggest land use change occurred on industrial land use that is 146,10 Ha (28,84%). Second, the use of land for industry in 2017 of 288,05 Ha has been in accordance with the spatial plan is in accordance with the industrial designation area, while the land with an area of 202,02 Ha is used for industries that are not in accordance with the industrial designation area. Pesatnya perkembangan industri dari tahun 2011-2017 berdampak pada penurunan luas tanah pertanian, disamping itu perkembangan industri tersebut berimplikasi pada ketidaksesuaian penggunaan tanah tehadap Rencana Tata Ruang Wilayah (RTRW). Kajian ini menjelaskan mengenai hasil analisis secara deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan keruangan dari dampak pembangunan industri terhadap perubahan penggunaan tanah serta kesesuaian penggunaan tanah untuk industri tahun 2017 terhadap RTRW. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa pertama, dampak pembangunan industri terhadap perubahan penggunaan tanah di Kabupaten Semarang tahun 2011-2017 mengakibatkan jumlah luas tanah pertanian mengalami penurunan sebesar 253,32 Ha. Perubahan penggunaan tanah terbesar terjadi pada penggunaan tanah untuk industri yaitu seluas 146,10 Ha (28,84%). Kedua, penggunaan tanah untuk industri tahun 2017 seluas 288,05 Ha telah sesuai dengan RTRW yaitu sesuai dengan kawasan peruntukan industri, sedangkan tanah dengan luas 202,02 Ha digunakan untuk industri yang tidak sesuai dengan kawasan peruntukan industri.
