Abstract Background Globally the adolescent and youths are facing different sexual and reproductive health problems like unwanted pregnancy, unsafe abortion, STI including HIV.HIV / AIDS is continue to be a major global health priority. HIV counseling and testing is a key strategic entry point to prevention, treatment, care and support services .HIV/AIDS counseling is “confidential communication between client and a care provider aimed at enabling the client to cope with stress and to take personal decisions relating to HIV/AIDS.VCT give clients an opportunity to explore their HIV risks and to learn their HIV test results in complete confidence.Objective The objective of the study was to asses factors affecting voluntary counseling and testing service utilization among preparatory school students in Gondar town.Methods Institutional based cross-sectional study design was employed. A multistage sampling procedure was conducted in the study area. Data were collected using pretested self-administered questionnaire and the data entered, clean and analyzed by using SPSS version 16 software. Descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analysis were employed. Multivariate analysis with 95% CI was computed to identify factors associated with voluntary counseling and testing service utilization at P-value <0.05.Results A total of 654 study participants were included in the study with the response rate of 97%. The study indicated that 81.7% of study participants knew about voluntary counseling and testing services utilization .But the practice of voluntary counseling and testing was 48.3% with (95% CI: 44.5 -52.1).Based on the finding of multivariate analysis among independent variables, age, place of birth, mother’s educational level and discussed with parents on the issue of VCT were significantly associated with voluntary counseling and testing services utilization.Conclusion Majority of the study participants were not utilize voluntary counseling and testing services, only few respondents ever had VCT test as well as the proportion of students who had discussed on VCT issues with their parent was also very low. Cultural taboos was the main obstacle to students did not discuss with parents on the issue of VCT in the study area. Therefore; it needs great effort all concerned body to improve their services utilization. In broadly family life education should be encourage for the students and parents to promote VCT utilization.

Background.In Ethiopia university students are among the most sexually active and high HIV risk young population group but unfortunately VCT uptake was low (35%–38%) among this group. Examining the factors contributing to VCT uptake is vital to facilitate HIV prevention and control efforts.Objective.To assess the prevalence of voluntary counseling and testing utilization and its associated factors among Bahirdar University students in April 2012.Methods.Cross-sectional study was conducted in April 2012, among Bahirdar University students. A multistage sampling procedure was used to select 801 students. Data were collected using pretested self-administered questionnaire and analyzed by using SPSS version-16.Results.772 students (79.7% males) participated in the study. The mean age of the respondents’ was 21.3. From all respondents 37.8% of the study participants had undergone HIV test. Different variables showed significant association with VCT uptake.Conclusion.The major factors identified for increased VCT service utilization were having a friend who got VCT, having discussion about HIV/AIDS with family, origin of residence, year of study, and having boy- or girlfriend. Therefore, actions targeting these predictors are necessary to effectively enhance the use of the VCT services utilization among students.

Abstract Background: The utilization of reproductive health service plays important role in preventing youths from different reproductive related health problems. Adolescents in Ethiopia have inadequate access to information and services.Objective: To evaluate utilization of reproductive health service and determinant factors among preparatory school students in Arba Minch town.Method: Institutional based cross sectional study was conducted among randomly selected 541 regular preparatory students in Arba Minch Town. Data was entered and clean into Epidata-4.6 templates then transferred to SPSS-25 statistical software for and analysis. A bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression model was used to identify statistically significant variables of the independent variable. Variables with P-value <0.05, CI 95% in the final model were considered significant determinant variables.Result: Out of those who had sexual intercourse 78.6% and 29.3% of them used family planning and voluntary counseling and testing service respectively. Married adolescents were 4.236 times more likely utilized F/P service than their counterparts (AOR=4.236, 95% CI: 1.182-15.183). The study participants living with both parents were about 1.6 times (AOR=1.645, CI: 1.077-2.513 more likely to use voluntary counseling and testing service compared to those who living with others.Conclusions and Recommendations: Majority (more than three fourth) of adolescents used family planning, but voluntary counseling and testing service utilization were low. The reasons for not utilizing family planning and voluntary counseling and testing service were felt ashamed from friends and unfriendly approach of health workers during service provision. Encourage adolescents open discussion about reproductive health service utilization with different peoples, open discussion within couples and encourage to increase female education are important steps to improve adolescent’s reproductive service utilization.
