Dental caries is a most common disease that affects large number of people. It is a worldwide public health problem, affecting numerous urban and rural communities. White-spot lesions (WSL) are the earliest macroscopic evidence of enamel caries. Typically, the enamel surface layer stays intact during subsurface demineralization, but, without treatment, will eventually collapse into a full cavity. Near-neutral pH of saliva is endowed with a natural buffering capacity. Natural demineralization of tooth at an early stage is reversed by saliva, which contains calcium ions, phosphate ions, buffering agents, fluoride, and other substances. The strategy for aided remineralisation is to have ions directly delivered to where and when they are needed the most. Several mechanisms are available for aided remineralisation. The most well known is the delivery of topical and systemic fluoride, which has been proven to be a highly effective measure for prevention of caries. However limitations and risks associated with the use of fluoride as a remineralising agent fuelled the need to develop newer non-toxic techniques that deliver calcium and phosphate ions directly into subsurface lesion and/or boost remineralising properties of saliva. Encouraging microscopic changes in the demineralized enamel surface following the treatment with different concentration of metal salts, involving zinc, strontium, magnesium, in addition to stannous fluoride, many metal salts are in use for the treatment of dental caries. Microscopic examination was conducted on teeth samples before and after pH-cycling procedure and following the treatment with the selected metal salt under polarized microscope (100X). The best obvious remineralisation was found following treatment with stannous fluoride, followed by zinc chloride. The stannous fluoride was the best in the remineralisation of initial caries, results for other metals seem to be promising if used for prevention of dental caries. Mineralization of teeth is determined by major inorganic elements as calcium, phosphorous in addition to other elements that occur in traces within tooth structure (Thylstrup and Fejerskov, 1996 Murry, 1996 Peter, 2004). Fluoride now a day is widely used either systemically or topically to increase resistance of teeth surface, it has been well documented as a major contributing factor in the decline of the incidence and severity of dental caries in many countries (Murry, 1996 Curzon,1999).So far fluoride has been considered to play an almost unique role in the prevention of dental caries however there is no reason to dismiss the role of other elements as being potential cariostatic agents. Different concentrations of different metal ions as zinc and copper have been tested for better effect on remineralisation in vitro (Dedhiya, et al., 1974 Fang et al., 1980). However controversy is present in the literature concerning their effectiveness in prevention of dental caries when used topically at effective concentrations (Torredo et al., 2004 Elzbieta et al., 2008 Curzon, 1983).

Although fluoride levels become elevated in sound enamel following a topical fluoride treatment, the caries-preventive effect of fluoride is thought to be due primarily to the role of fluoride in remineralization of clinically undetectable enamel lesions and hypomineralized enamel. During lesion formation, redistribution of fluoride from the enamel surface to the subsurface demineralized enamel occurs. This results in a surface zone with a relatively low fluoride content. In order to maintain an intact surface zone over a carious lesion, it may be necessary to replenish the fluoride levels with an exogenous fluoride source. By acid-etching the lesion surface, a more reactive surface is made available for fluoride interaction. In addition, porosities and etching patterns may be created, allowing for bonding of a caries-resistant resin material to the lesion surface. The purpose of this study was to determine the integrity of the caries-like lesion surface following acid-etching and subsequent stannous fluoride treatment (SnF2).

The aim of this study is to describe the remineralization effect of the nano-HA toothpaste on artificial caries. The artificial dental caries is made using sour solution. The demineralized teeth specimen is put into five kinds of toothpaste solution respectively for 5 days and 10 days, which are: solution of containing needle like nano-HA, solution of containing spherical nano-HA, solution of general HA, fluorine sodium solution and physiological saline. The hardness of specimen is measured and the surface morphology is characterized by SEM. The remineralized test indicates that the nano-HA toothpaste can enhance the hardness of artificial caries and improve the remineralization of artificial caries. The SEM analysis shows that the cavities and defects of enamel surface are decreased and many mineral salts are sedimentated, which indicate that the nano-HA could promote remineralization for the demineralized enamel.

In present era competition and advancement have led to hectic and stressful life, man has eventually forgotten the absolute enjoyment and solitary affection of nature and as a result is facing many health problems. Gridhrasi is no exception, it is correlated to sciatica in modern science where low back ache radiating to toes in the lateral aspect of the thigh associated with stiffness is the main complaint.

Dental caries is a chronic oral condition that disproportionately affects low-income women. The aim of this research was to investigate relationships between dental nutrition knowledge, socioecological factors, and prevalence of dental caries in low-income women. This quantitative cross-sectional study involved 220 women who were recruited from Central Texas. Participants completed demographics, the Dental Nutrition Knowledge Competency Scale, United States Adult Food Security Survey Module, and the Multidimensional Home Environment Scale. Two dentists measured dental caries via the Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth Index. Regression models were conducted to test the effects of dental nutrition knowledge and Multidimensional Home Environment Scale factors on dental caries. Finally, mediation analysis explored relationships between dental nutrition knowledge and dental caries, adjusting for Multidimensional Home Environment Scale scores. Results showed that dental nutrition knowledge and Multidimensional Home Environment Scale score were significantly associated with dental caries. Subscales of self-efficacy for eating healthy, oral hygiene practices, emotional eating, availability of unhealthy foods at home, and social support were related to dental caries. The relationship between dental nutrition knowledge and caries was mediated by Multidimensional Home Environment Scale scores. This research emphasizes the role of dental nutrition knowledge and socio-ecological factors on prevalence of dental caries. Public health interventions to reduce dental caries should involve strategies that increase dental nutrition knowledge and encourage behavior change in low-income populations.

The electron microprobe was used to analyze the calcium and phosphorus concentrations of sound, acid-etched, and remineralized enamel. By use of a weak acetic acid-potassium acetate buffer, it was found that the demineralization probably affected only the first 10 micrometers of the enamel surface. This demineralized enamel was successfully remineralized by the use of a calcifying solution. The changes in calcium and phosphorus concentrations and the Ca/P ratios were determined.

The specific role of protein deficiency in altering dental caries incidence in rat pups was investigated. A 10% protein supplement given to undernourished rats during development allowed them to overcome weight deficiencies and reversed dental caries to the low incidence found in well-nourished control rats. Caries in undernourished rats supplemented with an isocaloric, proteinfree solution, was as high as that of undernourished rats intubated with distilled water.

SUMMARY This study evaluated the microhardness and histomorphology of bovine enamel when 35% hydrogen peroxide is used. A total of 44 specimens were adapted to removable devices used by 11 individuals subjected to dental caries challenge. A decrease in microhardness was observed for all groups after the cariogenic challenge. Microscopic analysis revealed that fragments subjected to cariogenic challenge associated with bleaching had more intense superficial histologic changes, but the depth of the lesions remained unchanged. It was concluded that 35% hydrogen peroxide enhanced the reduction in hardness and histomorphologic changes in the enamel surface exposed to cariogenic challenge.
