While Deleuze explored the temporalities of alcoholism in American literature in The Logic of Sense, and Jean Clet Martin, among others, has extended this inquiry by further extracting the alcoholic’s lines of flight from the same literature, this chapter breaks the mould by understanding alcohol, distilled and in its pure form of ethanol, as well as its imbibition, as a question of a component that passes through anthropocentric, and across multiple non-anthropocentric assemblages. The exploitation of ethanol fermentation, for example, exists across species. Indeed, as we entertain more overtly human cultural examples, such as ‘wine’ for cats, a recent Japanese pet trend, the metabolic communion of interspecies companionship requires that the material expressivity of the substance is overcoded because the ‘wine’ is not only non-alcoholic but liquid catnip in a ‘wine’ bottle. Indeed, theorization of the pursuit of shared pleasures – using Guattari’s ethological terms, we might say deterritorializing from deterministic biological factors yet also modifying these in some measure as well (Machinic Unconscious) – and engaging multiple species is this chapter’s goal, achievable by plotting the passages of alcohol and its related components across assemblages and their material and socio-cultural expressive trajectories beyond strictly anthropocentric and Western prerogatives.

ABSTRACT A procedure for the quantitative determination of 5β-pregnan-3α-ol-20-one in urine is described. After acid hydrolysis of the pregnanolone-conjugates in urine, the free steroids are extracted with toluene. Pregnanolone is isolated in a pure form as its acetate; after chromatographic separation of the free steroids on alumina, the fraction containing pregnanolone is acetylated and rechromatographed on alumina. Quantitative determination of the isolated pregnanolone-acetate is carried out with the aid of the infrared spectrum recorded by a micro KBr-wafermethod. The reliability of the method under various conditions is discussed under the headings, specificity, accuracy, precision and sensitivity. It is possible to determine 30–40 μg pregnanolone in a 24-hours urine portion with a precision of 25%.

The review is concerned with detailed analysis of I. Kargashin’s monograph on Russian poetic narrations in the 17th–21st centuries. Normally applied to the epic genre, the concept of skaz [oral narration, tale] is extrapolated by the scholar to describe lyrical poetry. Hence the broad scope of issues discussed in the book: how accurately can the term be applied to lyrical works, since poetry is anti-narrative in its ‘pure form’? How can one structure the subjective sphere of poems, given that a skaz recreates a consciousness other than that of the author, unlike in lyrical poetry, where the author and the hero are inseparable? Following the questions, the scholar identifies typological characteristics of the examined phenomenon (appropriation of another’s consciousness, realization of this consciousness through a colloquial monologue, and depiction of the subject’s speech in verse), uncovers the reasons for its emergence (including ‘emancipation’ of the hero and transition to the spoken word), and traces its history and development.

Two simple, sensitive and extraction-free spectrophotometric methods are described for the determination of dothiepin hydrochloride (DOTH) both in pure form and in pharmaceutical tablets. The methods are based on ion-pair complex formation between dothiepin base (DOT) and two acidic dyes, namely, bromophenol blue (BPB) or bromocresol green (BCG) with absorption maximum at 425 nm for BPB method or 430 nm for BCG method. Beer?s law is obeyed over the concentration ranges of 1.0-15.0 and 1.0-17.5 ?g mL-1 DOT for BPB and BCG methods, respectively. The molar absorptivity values and Sandell?s sensitivity values are reported for both methods. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were calculated to be 0.18 and 0.53 ?g mL-1 for BPB method, and 0.17 and 0.50 ?g mL-1 for BCG method, respectively. The stoichiometry of the complex in either case was found to be 1: 1 and the conditional stability constant (KF) of the complexes has also been calculated. The proposed methods were applied successfully to the determination of DOTH in pure form and in its tablet form with good accuracy and precision. Statistical comparison of the results was performed using Student's t-test and variance ratio F-test at 95% confidence level and there was no significant difference between the official and proposed methods with regard to accuracy and precision. Further, the validity of the proposed methods was confirmed by recovery studies via standard addition technique.

✓ The rapid spontaneous resolution of two traumatic acute hematomas, one extradural and one subdural, is reported in a 17-year-old young man. The authors believe that this is the first report of simultaneous resolution of both types of hematoma.
