Conditioning, thickening, and dewatering: research update/research needs

The production of sludges that are amenable to beneficial reuse (and thereby merit the term “biosolids”) has become a high priority concern in wastewater treatment. Regulations in many countries have become stringent in this regard, and the production of suitable biosolids now influences the selection, design, and operation of upstream processes. Among these are the conditioning, thickening, and dewatering of sludges. This paper briefly reviews current technology trends in these process areas, placing them in the context of overall needs for improved biosolids management. It is foreseen that conditioning, thickening and dewatering processes will need to operate at higher performance and reliability levels to maintain disposal and reuse flexibility. The chemistry of conditioning must be more clearly determined since secondary interactions of the conditioning additives may be important in ways that are not currently recognized.

In this paper, we propose a statistical theoretical framework for incorporation of sensor and actuator faults in dynamic simulations of wastewater treatment operation. Sensor and actuator faults and failures are often neglected in simulations for control strategy development and testing, although it is well known that they represent a significant obstacle for realising control at full-scale facilities. The framework for incorporating faults and failures is based on Markov chains and displays the appealing property of easy transition of sensor and actuator history into a model for fault generation. The paper briefly describes Markov theory and how this is used together with models for sensor and actuator dynamics to achieve a realistic simulation of measurements and actuators.

In recent years, close attention has been paid to microbial flocculants because of their advantages, including safety to humans, environmental friendliness, and acceptable removal performances. In this review, the preparation methods of microbial flocculants were first reviewed. Then, the performances of bioflocculants in the removal of suspended solids, heavy metals, and other organic pollutants from various types of wastewater were described and commented, and the removal mechanisms, including adsorption bridging, charge neutralization, chemical reactions, and charge neutrality, were also discussed. The future research needs on microbial flocculants were also proposed. This review would lead to a better understanding of current status, challenges, and corresponding strategies on microbial flocculants and bioflocculation in wastewater treatment.

Abstract. The application of membrane technology in water and wastewater treatment is increasing due to stringent water quality standards. Nanofiltration (NF) is one of the widely used membrane processes for water and wastewater treatment in addition to other applications such as desalination. NF has replaced reverse osmosis (RO) membranes in many applications due to lower energy consumption and higher flux rates. This paper briefly reviews the application of NF for water and wastewater treatment including fundamentals, mechanisms, fouling challenges and their controls.
