Cross sections for the 70,76Ge(n,2n), 72,73Ge(n,p) and 72,74Ge(n, α) reactions have been measured at the 5.5 MV tandem T11/25 Accelerator Laboratory of NCSR Demokritos, using the activation technique. Neutron beams have been produced in the ~16-20 MeV energy region, by means of the 3H(d,n)4He reaction. The maximum flux has been determined to be of the order of 105 n/cm2 s, while the flux variation of the neutron beam was monitored by using a BF3 detector. The cross section has been deduced with respect to the 27Al(n, α)24Na and 93Nb(n,2n)92mNb reference reactions. The contaminations from reactions induced on neighboring Ge isotopes and leading to the same residual nucleus, have been taken into account. After the end of the irradiations, the activity induced by the neutron beams at the targets and reference foils, has been measured by HPGe detectors. Statistical model calculations using the EMPIRE code were performed on the data measured in this work as well as on data reported in literature.

The partial photonuclear [Formula: see text], pn) and [Formula: see text] and the total photonuclear cross-sections (the giant dipole resonance (GDR)) have been investigated theoretically for neodymium isotopes, namely [Formula: see text]Nd, using framework of the EMPIRE 3.2.2 code. The energy, width and cross-section parameters of the GDR used in our calculations have been investigated in this paper depending on the deformation parameters of nuclei. The calculated results have been compared with the experimental data and with those calculated using Lorentzian fitting parameters. Our calculations show a good agreement for all isotopes under study and give better results than the results calculated with Lorentzian parameters. Furthermore, the neutron number dependence of the total and partial photonuclear cross-sections has also been discussed. The results appear that the EMPIRE code used is a perfect tool for reproducing the splitting in the GDR for deformed [Formula: see text]Nd isotope in two distinct dipole modes which are perfectly consistent with the experimental results. It has also been shown that the present parameters are suitable parameters for reproducing the GDR for spherical, or nearly spherical, and the deformed ([Formula: see text]Nd) neodymium isotopes. The parameters have been indicating the small deformation in [Formula: see text]Nd, which cannot be shown by the Lorentzian fitting parameters.

Both 13C 16O and 22Ne 25Mg reactions perform a cosmic role in the production of neutrons in AGB stars, which significantly contributes to the nucleosynthesis via the s-process. The astrophysical S-factor for both reactions has been calculated in this research, utilizing EMPIRE code and depending on two parameter sets for the optical potential: McFadden and Satchler (MFS), and Avrigeanu and Hodgson (AH) for the non-resonant region of the spectrum, and over a temperature range . The extrapolated S-factor at zero energy is derived to be  and  for 13C 16O,  and  for 22Ne 25Mg from using MFS and AH parameter sets respectively, and they show a reasonable agreement with the most recommended value. The differences in the S-factor, S(E), values obtained from these two adopted parameters set, were attributed to the variations of the real potential term's diffuseness parameter that affecting the reaction cross section, hence S-factor, and specifically at low energy region. Moreover, the present results imply an influential enhancement of the rates by the electron shielding effect at the low-temperature region  in which 13C 16O reaction activated, and especially on 22Ne 25Mg reaction. In addition, for both adopted reactions and overall selected temperature range, the reaction rates using  values based on MFS showed acceptable results with other previous compilations and reference libraries. While that obtained from AH exceed all other compilations even though the resonance contributions are currently unconsidered.

Knowledge of neutron cross-sections of various plutonium isotopes and other minor actinides is crucial for the design of advanced nuclear systems. The 240,242Pu(n,f) cross-sections were measured at the CERN n_TOF facility, taking advantage of the wide energy range (from thermal to GeV) and the high instantaneous flux of the neutron beam. In this work, preliminary results are presented along with a theoretical cross-section calculation performed with the EMPIRE code.
