TAPPI test T811 is the specified method to ascertain ECT relative to box manufacturer’s certification compliance of corrugated fiberboard under Rule 41/ Alternate Item 222. T811 test sample heights were derived from typical board constructions at the time of the test method’s initial development. New, smaller flute sizes have since been developed, and the use of lighter weight boards has become more common. The T811 test method includes sample specifications for typical A-flute, B-flute, and C-flute singlewall (and doublewall and triplewall) structures, but not for newer thinner E-flute or F-flute structures. This research explores the relationship of ECT sample height to measured compressive load, in an effort to determine valid E-flute and F-flute ECT sample heights for use with the T811 method. Through this process, it identifies challenges present in our use of current ECT test methods as a measure of intrinsic compressive strength for smaller flute structures. The data does not support the use of TAPPI T 811 for ECT measurement for E and F flute structures, and demonstrates inconsistencies with current height specifi-cations for some lightweight B flute.

SUMMARYA series of development stages (I–XI) have been devised to describe the development of the cyst wall of the metacestode ofHymenolepis diminuta. The cyst wall possesses tegumentary, muscular, fibrous and inner cyst tissues, the developmental rates and differentiation patterns of which are not identical. The tegumentary tissue differentiates posteriorly. Its microvillus-bearing distal cytoplasm remains simple until scolex retraction, after which rapid increase in depth followed by vacuolation occurs and basal membrane infoldings surround Phase 3 fibrogenesis fibrils. Senescence, which also affects the tegumentary cytons, then ensues. The muscle system development is posteriad and maturation, completed before scolex retraction, is followed by myocyton senescence. Posteriorly differentiated fibroblasts commence Phase 1 fibrogenesis after scolex retraction and the primary fibrous zone is fully established within approximately 6 days. Phase 2 and 3 fibrogenesis develop centrifugally, the fibrils of Phase 2 surrounding the tegumentary cytons and myocytons prior to their senescence, and those of Phase 3 lying more peripherally. The inner cyst tissue, established posteriorly, differentiates anteriorly, centripetally and early, the penultimate stage commencing just before scolex retraction, about 6 days after which the final maturation junctional complexes start development. Neitherin vitroexcystment nor infectivity of the definitive host can be satisfactorily achieved before the initial development of the primary fibrous zone. This may play a skeletal role during excystment, and is shown to be unaffected by the digestive enzymes which cause loss of cytoplasmic integrity in the outer regions of the cyst.

Thermal stability is an important characteristic of alternative fuels that must be evaluated before they can be used in aviation engines. This characteristic is of great importance to the effectiveness of the fuel as a coolant and to the engine’s combustion performance. In this work, the thermal stability of Gevo fuel, an alcohol to jet fuel made from plant derived feedstock, was studied. This analysis was used to comment on the effectiveness of the current thermal stability test standard. This work was performed using a spectroscopic ellipsometer to measure the thickness of deposits left on aluminum substrates. It was observed that Gevo deposit thickness increased slowly up to 375 °C and much more rapidly after that point. Similar behavior was observed in JP-8 fuel. Comparisons were also made between color standard ratings and ellipsometric thickness measurements, and it was found that in some cases, darker colors did not indicate thicker deposits. Reference tubes were used to validate the optical models used in this work, and different optical constants were found to best model the results than what are published in the ASTM D3241 test method for thermal stability.

AbstractIn this report, we describe the initial development and proof-of-concept studies for UB-612, the first multitope protein-peptide vaccine against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the pathogen responsible for the Coronavirus Disease of 2019 (COVID-19). UB-612 consists of eight components rationally designed for induction of high neutralizing antibodies and broad T cell responses against SARS-CoV-2: the S1-RBD-sFc fusion protein, six synthetic peptides (one universal peptide and five SARS-CoV-2-derived peptides), a proprietary CpG TLR-9 agonist, and aluminum phosphate adjuvant. Through immunogenicity studies in guinea pigs and rats, we optimized the design of protein/peptide immunogens and selected an adjuvant system, yielding a vaccine that provided excellent S1-RBD binding and high neutralizing antibody responses, robust cellular responses, and a Th1-oriented response at low doses of the vaccine. Our candidate vaccine was then advanced into challenge studies, in which it reduced viral load and prevented development of disease in a mouse challenge model and in nonhuman primates (NHP, immunogenicity part is completed, challenge is ongoing). A GLP-compliant toxicity study has shown a favorable safety profile for the vaccine. With the Phase 1 trial ongoing in Taiwan and additional trials planned worldwide, UB-612 is a highly promising and differentiated vaccine candidate for prevention of SARS-CoV-2 transmission and COVID-19 disease.
