For data collection, questionnaire was distributed to 82 respondents of STIBA IEC Jakarta via whatsApp and face book messenger. In addition, interviews were also conducted to find out the detail information about the role of teacher and inspirational/motivational teacher. For data analysis, the step of sorting, classifying, coding, and presenting the data and drawing conclusion was adopted.  This is a research based article, which has aimed to elaborate the learners’ English learning motivation whether it is instrumentally, integratively or personally motivated and the most dominance type of motivation as well as the important role of teacher in motivating students. It is somewhat surprising that there are six categories found in the research, namely personal motivation (PS), integrative motivation (IT), instrumental motivation (IS), the combination of PS & IT, PS & IS, and IT & IS. The findings have revealed that 1) instrumental motivation is the most dominant type as the first rank, which includes to get a better living, better jobs and position; PS & IS as second rank, IT & IS as the third rank, PS & IT as the fourth rank, personal motivation as the fifth rank and integrative motivation as the last rank; 2) teacher who is resourceful, skillful, competent and has good personality plays a imperative role in motivating and inspiring students. To sum up, regardless of personal, integrative or instrumental motivation, teacher as a role model also determines learner’s success in learning L2. Book reviews reflect the views and opinions of the respective reviewers and do not necessarily represent the position of SCENARIO. Helga Tschurtschenthaler’s study is one of the most important scholarly contributions in recent years to the field of drama-based foreign language teaching. She conducted her research in an EFL class in an upper secondary school in multilingual South Tyrol and presents a plethora of data that demonstrates the impact of drama in foreign language education on students’ sense of self as emerging multilingual subjects (Kramsch 2009). What stands out about this study, besides its detailed presentation and analysis of student data, is the fact that Tschurtschenthaler succeeds in connecting recent theoretical contributions to the fields of language education and identity to more practical considerations. Overcoming the gap between theory and practice in this domain is one of her signal achievements. “You are not you when you speak Italian. It’s as if you become someone else when you change into Italian. You don’t only sound different, but you even behave differently. Then, you’re not the person I know.” (11) These are the opening lines of the book, leading the reader directly to its main subject. Tschurtschenthaler explains that it was a ...

In Iran the age of learning English as a foreign language is decreasing yearly. It is obvious that learning English at a very early age is a most appropriate time to start. The investigation in this study is focused on the speech act of request. Instructional effects of learning request strategies are assessed in preschoolers who received instruction to find out whether the exposure to the foreign language learning enhances the development of request strategy use and brings about changes in their first language strategy use features. The data were collected from 10 preschool Iranian learners of English as a foreign language. The participants of the study took a two-semester speaking course in an academic setting in Iran. The study had a pretest and posttest design in which 10 conversations were used including polite request strategies of English to analyze instructional effects on the learners’ first language after the posttest, by comparing and measuring the backward transfer against the pretest results. The oral task was in the form of role plays which were also utilized for communicative practice with the learners. The data were rated for the extent of a foreign language effect on the first language by experienced tutors and linguistic analyses were done to identify the foreign language components of request strategies features in the first language production. Results showed that frequent use of English request strategy features in the first language was an indication of L2 students’ beneficial experience in their L1.

The rapid development of information and communication technologies, the expansion of international ties in the field of economy, science, culture and education have made foreign language knowledge one of the key components in a specialist’s professional competence. Foreign language in the university is transformed from simply discipline into a tool for obtaining professional information. Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is one of the most expedient ways to successfully establish links between majoring disciplines, as well as effectively prepare a future specialist to conduct professional communication with colleagues in a foreign language, which determines the relevance of our work. The article describes the principles of students’ Content and Language Integrated Learning, their advantages and problems of implementation. The purpose of the article is to determine the impact of CLIL on improving students’ study of vocabulary and to find out if there is a difference between the progress in students’ using CLIL in classes and those who have relied on traditional methods. The study selected students who were trained in experimental and control groups. Students in the experimental group actively used CLIL methods. The results showed that students in this experimental group demonstrate higher skill levels and higher communicative competence than their peers. However, in the process of using the CLIL methodology, both teachers and students faced a number of difficulties. The author concludes that CLIL has the potential to better understand professional content through foreign language learning. These results can be used by teachers, methodologists, researchers, and developers of educational programs.

This research investigates the interaction between English students learning Chinese in the UK and Chinese students learning English in China via a wiki platform. Activity theory and legitimate peripheral participation theory were employed as a theoretical framework; wiki was embedded as an interactive learning tool. The findings revealed that Chinese native speakers assisted English students learning Chinese as foreign language (CFL) by means of reorganizing word orders and restructuring sentence patterns. The usages of clarification and elaboration were more frequent than the usages of added and deleted information. Both CFL and English as foreign language (EFL) students interacted with each other in attending to language forms through the essay correction and revision process, and the interaction consequently enhanced their target language learning. The study suggests that wiki provides a dynamic platform, which encourages further integration into the syllabus to support foreign language learning.
