AbstractThe field dependence of magnetization of a silicon nanosandwich measured at room temperature in weak magnetic fields manifests de Haas–van Alphen oscillations, the behavior of which is explained under the condition of the dependence of the effective carrier mass on the external magnetic field.

AbstractThe observation of de Haas–van Alphen oscillations when studying the silicon nanostructure at room temperature in weak magnetic fields enables the use of thermodynamic relations to calculate the density of states at the Fermi level at critical values of external magnetic-field strengths for integer filling factors.

PS/CoPd Janus particles respond very sensitively to application of low external magnetic fields. Owing to the magnetic properties, the PS/CoPd particles may be used, for example, to sense the presence of weak magnetic fields as micro-magnetometers.

Abstract The effect of an external magnetic field on the decay of an excited single rotational state of the 1Au electronic state of biacetyl is observed in a hypersonic jet experiment after narrow bandwidth laser excitation. The lifetime of the ex-cited state decreases already at low magnetic fields and the molecular quantum beat vanishes.

AbstractMagnetization dynamics in spheroidal ferromagnetic samples is studied theoretically. It is shown that, in a magnetostatic approximation, electronic-nuclear magnetostatic modes with a discrete spectrum of eigen oscillations exist in such samples. The structure and the field dependence of the frequencies of these oscillations are substantially dependent on the parameter of the spheroid shape that is the ratio of it’s axes and also on the external magnetic field value. In a certain region of values of these parameters, the dependence of the eigenfrequencies of the system on them becomes nontrivial. The external field strength and the sample shape determine not only the eigenfrequencies in the system, but also the number of the eigenmodes. In addition, for each of the eigenmodes, there exists a “forbidden” region of magnetic fields and shape parameters in which this mode cannot be observed.

The magnetic alignment of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and lepidocrocite nanorods (LpN), pristine and in hybrid suspensions has been investigated using contrast-matched small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) under in situ magnetic fields (0 – 6.8 T) and polarized optical microscopy. The pristine CNC (diamagnetic) and pristine LpN (paramagnetic) align perpendicular and parallel to the direction of field, respectively. The alignment of both the nanoparticles in their hybrid suspensions depends on the relative amount of the two components (CNC and LpN) and strength of the applied magnetic field. In the presence of 10 wt% LpN and fields < 1.0 T, the CNC align parallel to the field. In the hybrid containing lower amount of LpN (1 wt%), the ordering of CNC is partially frustrated in all range of magnetic field. At the same time, the LpN shows both perpendicular and parallel orientation, in the presence of CNC. This study highlights that the natural perpendicular ordering of CNC can be switched to parallel by weak magnetic fields and the incorporation of paramagnetic nanoparticle as LpN, as well it gives a method to influence the orientation of LpN.<br>

AbstractIn continuous casting DC magnetic fields perpendicular to the wide faces of the mold are used to control the flow in the mold. Especially in this case, even a rough knowledge of the flow structure in the mold would be highly desirable. The contactless inductive flow tomography (CIFT) allows to reconstruct the dominating two-dimensional flow structure in a slab casting mold by applying one external magnetic field and by measuring the flow-induced magnetic fields outside the mold. For a physical model of a mold with a cross section of 140 mm×35 mm we present preliminary measurements of the flow field in the mold in the presence of a magnetic brake. In addition, we show first reconstructions of the flow field in a mold with the cross section of 400 mm×100 mm demonstrating the upward scalability of CIFT.

In contrast to the majority of related experiments, which are carried out in organic solvents at high temperatures and pressures, cobalt nanowires were synthesized by chemical reduction in aqueous solution with the assistance of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as surfactant under moderate conditions for the first time, while an external magnetic field of 40 mT was applied. Uniform linear cobalt nanowires with relatively smooth surfaces and firm structure were obtained and possessed an average diameter of about 100 nm with a coating layer of PVP. By comparison, the external magnetic field and PVP were proven to have a crucial influence on the morphology and the size of the synthesized cobalt nanowires. The prepared cobalt nanowires are crystalline and mainly consist of cobalt as well as a small amount of platinum. Magnetic measurements showed that the resultant cobalt nanowires were ferromagnetic at room temperature. The saturation magnetization (M s) and the coercivity (H c) were 112.00 emu/g and 352.87 Oe, respectively.

The results of the creation of a high-temperature spin injector based on EuO: Fe composite material are discussed. Their magnetic, electrical, structural and resonance parameters are given in a wide range of temperatures and an external magnetic field. A model calculation of the electronic spectrum of the solid solution Eu–Fe–O, responsible for the manifestation of the outstanding properties of the composite, is performed. The possibility of creating semiconductor spin electronics devices capable of operating at room temperature is shown.
