From 2000, criticism on Woolf and the visual has quadrupled in volume. The research work about a photographic Woolf – which include other photographers’ interaction with Woolf such as Gisèle Freund or my own analysis of Woolf and Bell’s personal photo albums – shows how these newer issues of Woolf and photography are now absolutely central in any consideration of Virginia Woolf studies, gaining a noticeable importance when we consider the interdisciplinary issue of photography and gender.

Despite their claims that they did not know one another very well, Woolf and Rebecca West maintained a wary regard for one another throughout their lifetimes. To Woolf, West was a “celebrity” and also a somewhat aggressive figure; to West, Woolf was a genius and also a mad woman. In 1982, Woolf was described in the Saturday Review as “the Marilyn Monroe of American academia,” while West was profiled as “the aged virago of English intellectuals” in the New York Times. By putting recent work on literary celebrity into dialogue with Brenda Silver’s earlier theorizing of Woolf’s “iconicity,” this paper asks how West went from being “Indisputably the world’s number 1 Woman Writer” (Time, 1947) to “little more than a famous name” (Mendelson 2000), and questions the value of celebrity to a woman writer. It argues that West and Woolf mutually missed the opportunity for a fruitful intimacy.

It discusses the unique works of modernist painters and writers (Marie Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Pablo Picasso and Virginia Woolf) to explore how modernist art and literature both defined, reflected and shaped gender roles. Virginia Woolf in A room of one’s own (1929) builds a strong connection between food and the material conditions of women writers, asking herself: what food do we feed women as artists upon? From this point of view, food can be considered a metaphor for the achievement of both artistic and gender equality. Hence, my paper aims to outline the relevance of this under-investigated topic in children’s literature, focusing on feminist Künstellromans, namely stories about a female artist’s journey to maturity. Drawing from the methodology of Nodelman, I will investigate two opposite narrative situations: famine and feast. In the first one, the lack of food represents the struggle in the artistic development, often caused by a hostile educational environment, while, in the second, nourishment can be interpreted as fruitful sustainment for the body and soul. My hypothesis seeks to underline how food and girls’ development as women and artists intertwine in children’s literature, figuring out a possible answer to Woolf’s question.

With thirty-nine original chapters from internationally prominent scholars, The Oxford Handbook of Virginia Woolf is designed for scholars and graduate students. Feminist to the core, each chapter examines an aspect of Woolf’s achievement and legacy. Each contribution offers an overview that is at once fresh and thoroughly grounded in prior scholarship. Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) wrote prolifically and experimentally. In all she wrote and did, she strove for the rights of women artists: she was a feminist. This volume’s six parts take her feminism and her experiments in language as foundational to her legacy: the opening Part I has a biographical focus; then the chapters in Part II examine her career, holistically and chronologically; Part III offers more detail on the extent of her experimental and aesthetic practices, taking aspects of her innovation across multiple genres, examining each along the span of her career; Part IV invites readers to consider how Woolf worked in cultural fields including and extending beyond the Hogarth Press and the TLS and Part V ‘Contexts’ moves beyond writing to depict her engagement with expectations of class and gender, the natural world, as well as the political, artistic, and popular culture of her time. Finally, ‘Afterlives’ demonstrates the many ways Woolf’s reputation continues to grow, across the globe, and across media, in ideas and in artistic expression. Chapters on Woolf’s engagement with feminism and suffrage are followed by chapters on Woolf’s posthumous influence on conversations around queer and feminist theory. Of particular note is that chapters explore three distinct Woolfian traditions in fiction: the novel of manners, magical realism, and the feminist novel.

AbstractThis paper studies how the novel Orlando by Virginia Woolf deconstructs the male / female gender binary by deconstructing the past / future time binary. The protagonist’s sex change disrupts the linearity of ‘straight time’, in which the causality of gender is monodirectional, queer agency is impossible, and a false equivalency is drawn between gender identity and biological sex. The text instead leads Orlando (and the reader) away from straight time and into queer time, which is multidirectional, non-linear and non-heteronormative, and which unhitches gender identity at least partially from biological sex through a process that I call ‘gender lag’. This lag grants queer agency to Orlando in terms of his / her own gender identity and gender performativity. In exercising queer agency, Orlando’s changing body becomes a queer ‘chronotope’, that is, a queer expression of time and space within the narrative. Explored in the paper are the various means employed within the text to queer time and gender. The cultural context within which Orlando was written is also considered as a contributing factor to the subtextuality of its queerness. Finally, the text’s transgender connotations are analysed.

The present study delves into the concept of gender by applying the theory of performativity on Qurratulain Hyder’s story ‘The Sound of Falling leaves’. Awareness of the distinction between sex and gender started with the first wave of feminism. Many renowned critics like Virginia Woolf, Simone de Beauvoir, Kate Millet, and Judith Butler have explained this distinction. Writers portray society in text and many writers have tried their hands to depict the role, values, and status of women in a male-dominated patriarchal society. There are many reforms regarding the protection of women and to make women gender better, but we still find a lot of lacks. Gender is defined by society. One is born with sex and becomes a man or woman as he or she starts to identify with society. Gender is constructed on the base of performance of speech and actions which are repeated again and again until it becomes part of our consciousness (Butler, 1990). We have not found any research on this story regarding the application of the theory of performativity. So, this research is designed to examine to what extent the theory of performativity is true by discussing the portrayal of women in this story. This research also analyzes to what extent there is change in a Subcontinent society regarding therole and status of female. Discussion and analysis of text supports the theory of performativity. Instead of many reforms for women rights still woman of subcontinent like ‘Tanvir Fatima’ are suffering. She becomes victim of conservative society who is not ready to accept modern girls. She is beaten terribly by Khushwaqt and has no say. Her dreams are shattered by both cruel men and women. Further, this study also provides suggestions about how we can improve gender roles and provide healthy atmosphere for both men and women who can play the leading roles for the betterment of the world.
