This study aims to (1) identify the factors affecting the production of oil palm cultivation business by the smallholders and (2) identify the technical level as well as factors influencing business inefficiency of oil palm cultivation by the smallholders  in Air Sugihan Sub District of Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, South Sumatera Province.  This research uses the  basic method of analytical descriptive method.  The data were collected by way of observation and direct interviews in the field guided by a questionnaire.  The research location was determined purposively, that is in Pangkalan Damai Village, Air Sugihan Sub-district, Ogan Komering Ilir Municipality, South Sumatera Province. Sampling was conducted using non probabilistic sampling method (purposive sampling).  The research investigated 79 smallholder farmers of oil palm cultivation in Pangkalan Damai village of Air Sugihan Sub-district, Ogan Komering Ilir Municipality, South Sumatera Province.  On the basis of the analysis, it is revealed  that (1) the factors affecting the increase of palm production were labor, land area, TSP fertilizer, NPK fertilizer, organic fertilizer, herbicides and insecticides which also have an effect on decreasing  palm production. (2) Palm plantation business was technically efficient with the average technical level of smallholder palm farmers in Air Sugihan Sub-district of Ogan Komering Ilir Municipality of 0.86090.  Factors that decrease the technical inefficiency in smallholder palm cultivation in Air Sugihan Sub-district of Ogan Komering Ilir Regency were farmers’ education level.  This information can be used by the goverment to improve technical efficiency through education in the form of counseling and training to increase production.

This study analyzes the factors influencing gambier productivity, analyzes the technical efficiency of gambier farming, and analyzes the factors affecting gambier farming's technical efficiency. This research was conducted in Lima Puluh Kota Regency, a gambier production center in West Sumatra. Data were analyzed using the Cobb Douglas stochastic frontier production function. The results showed that the factors that significantly influenced gambier's productivity were labor, NPK fertilizer, plant age, number of trees, varieties, and technology. The number of labor, fertilizer factor, plant age, number of trees, and seedling varieties had a positive effect on gambier productivity. In contrast, NPK fertilizer and technology had a negative impact on gambier productivity. The technical efficiency level of gambier farming started from 0.25 to 0.99 with an average level of 0.76. It means that farmers are technically efficient but can still increase gambier productivity if they use production inputs appropriately and adequately. Factors that significantly influence technical efficiency are age, farming experience, and technology. Older farmers will have a higher level of technical efficiency compared to young age. The lower the farming experience, the more technically efficient the farmer is. Farmers who use the hydraulic jack system technology are more efficient than farmers who use the jack system technology

Shallot is an important vegetable commodity for most Indonesian people. Shallots production is not yet able to supply the domestic consumption, and some is still met through imports. The challenge to produce shallots will be more complex, such as: the desire of consumers to high-quality products and environmentally friendly, as well as competition with similar products in the era of free trade. Based on these reasons, research has been done and the purpose of this study was to analyze the factors affecting shallots production, measuring the level of technical efficiency and economical efficiency. The study was conducted in Nganjuk District by taking 179 respondents from four sub districts. Interviews were conducted in October and November 2013, planting shallots April unti August 2013. Methods of analysis using the stochastic frontier production function to look at the effect of inputs on shallots production, followed by the analysis of technical efficiency (TE), allocative efficiency (AE) and economical efficiency (EE), and the final analysis of competitiveness using the Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM). The independent variable inputs consist of land (X1), seeds (X2), NPK fertilizer (X3), organic fertilizer (X4), labor (X5) and pesticides (X6). The analysis showed all independent variables significantly affected shallots production, where the value of the elasticity of the independent variable X2 is the highest, amounting to 0.2822. The analysis also obtained an average value of TE is equal to 0.808 means farmers are efficient, although there are farmers who are still not efficient. Although TE has been achieved, but is economically inefficient, because the average value of EE only 0.509. From PAM results it can be seen that farming shallots in this study has a competitive advantage but do not yet have a comparative advantage.

Abstract The economic importance of soybean towards poverty alleviation and food security is gaining wider popularity and common acceptance among smallholder farmers in sub-Sahara Africa, especially in Ghana. Commercial soybean cultivation is relatively new in Ghana; hence it has recently benefited from several productivities enhancing innovation/technologies. However, despite these efforts, productivity has remained low. This paper investigates factors affecting production efficiency among commercial soybean farmers, across the three commercial districts of the Upper West region of Ghana. A cross-sectional data collected from 271 soybean farmers were used to investigate technical efficiency of soybean production. The overall mean technical efficiency estimate is 59% with a scale elasticity of 0.89-indicating a huge scope for efficiency improvement. The result shows that, factors affecting technical efficiency are dependent on the farmer’s socioeconomic status. With the existing technology and production recourses, soybean farmers can improve their current levels of soybean production by 41% through the adoption of best production practices.

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) holds a very strategic role in the Indonesia economy. Plants that have reached the economical age of 25 years need to be replanted using qualified oil palm seedling. The qualified seedling is obtained through proper fertilization. The combination of NPK fertilizer and organic material of oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) which has been given a cellulolytic bacterial consortium can provide sufficient nutrients for the growth of oil palm seedlings. The study aimed to determine the effect of giving a combination of OPEFB organic material, cellulolytic bacterial consortium, and NPK fertilizer on the growth of oil palm seedling (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) at main nursery. This experiment used a single factor experiment arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The treatments were a 100% NPK, a OPEFB compost, a 50% NPK + OPEFB compost, a 50% NPK + OPEFB + Cellulolytic bacterial consortium, and a OPEFB + cellulolytic bacterial consortium. The results showed that the application of inorganic fertilizers combined with organic fertilizers (a OPEFB compost and a OPEFB + cellulolytic bacterial consortium) had a good effect on each parameter. Giving organic fertilizer without inorganic fertilizer had not affected plant growth on all parameters. Application of a OPEFB compost and a OPEFB + cellulolytic bacterial consortium can reduce the use of inorganic fertilizers by 50%.

Abstract The livestock sector is the largest agricultural-sub sector in South Africa contributing approximately 30% to the agricultural output. The aim of this research is to measure the profit efficiency of smallholder sheep farmers and to identify the factors affecting profit efficiency of the farmer, in order to propose better strategies for sustainable livestock production among smallholder farmers in the Free State. A stochastic profit frontier approach was used to evaluate the profitability and efficiency of 217 smallholders in the N8 development corridor Free State, South Africa. The results found that the farmers are not efficiency and have great capacity to improve profitability in sheep production. The result showed that Profit efficiencies of the farmers varied between 15.5% and 80.4% with a mean of 65.1% implying that an estimated 34.9% of the profit is lost due to a combination of economic and allocative inefficiencies in sheep production. The study found that profit efficiency is positively influenced by level of education and household size (members below 18 years old) while gender and sheep loss increase profit inefficiency. Profit efficiency of the farmers can be significantly increased through effective education and training of farmers.

<p><br />Main nursery is the first step affecting oil palm’s age and productivity. Good plant growth will produce high quality and yield of oil palm. The demand of oil palm seedlings for extensification and replantation increases continuously, and therefore this need to be supported by precise fertilization programs. The objectives of this experiment were to investigate the role of organic fertilizer and to obtain the best organic-NPK fertilizer combination in increasing the effectiveness of the use of NPK fertilizer for the growth of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) seedling in the main nursery. The experiment was conducted from December 2011 to September 2012 at IPB Teaching Farm Dramaga Bogor. The treatment was arranged in a factorial randomized block design with three replications. The first factor was amount of organic fertilizer consisted of 0:6, 1:6, 2:6, and 3:6 of the soil volume (6 kg). The second factor was NPK fertilizer rates, i.e., 0.0, 127.5, 255, and 382.5 g NPK per plant. The results showed that application of organic fertilizer increased the effectiveness of NPK fertilizer and could be a substitute for NPK fertilizer in oil palm seedlings. The best combination treatment was 2:6 (organic fertilizer:top soil) and 382.5 NPK g per plant with effectiveness of 158.9, 209.1 and 170.1 % for plant height, leaf number and stem diameter, respectively. The efficiency of N, P, and K application were 56.2, 11.1, and 29.0% for the same variables, respectively. Based on morphological variables, recommended rate of an NPK compound fertilizer 15-15-15 was in the range of 396.05 g per seedling for eight months. Recommended NPK were 7.00, 12.59, 37.58, 56.41, 36.74, 87.00, 86.60, and 72.97 g per seedling for first to eighth months, respectively.</p><p>Keywords: chlorophyll, fertilizer recomendation, morphological and physiological response, nutrient balance</p>
