Photovoltaic (PV) power systems are increasingly being used as renewable power generation sources. Quasi-Z-source inverters (qZSI) are a recent, high-potential technology that can be used to integrate PV power systems into AC networks. Simultaneously, concerns regarding the stability of PV power systems are increasing. Converters reduce the damping of grid-connected converter systems, leading to instability. Several studies have analyzed the stability and dynamics of qZSI, although the characterization of qZSI-PV system dynamics in order to study transient interactions and stability has not yet been properly completed. This paper contributes a small-signal, state-space-averaged model of qZSI-PV systems in order to study these issues. The model is also applied to investigate the stability of PV power systems by analyzing the influence of system parameters. Moreover, solutions to mitigate the instabilities are proposed and the stability is verified using PSCAD time domain simulations.

This paper investigates the utilization of photovoltaic (PV) systems in a rural area electricity network. The Rural Area Electricity Company of Oman is planning to install a 304 kW PV system at the powerhouse of the Almazyonah network. Based on the available network data, a power flow model of the system under study was built and the system’s performance was studied. The location and installed capacity of the planned PV system were optimized based on loss reduction.

Outages and faults cause problems in interconnected power system with huge economic consequences in modern societies. In the power system blackouts, black start resources such as micro combined heat and power (CHP) systems and renewable energies, due to their self-start ability, are one of the solutions to restore power system as quickly as possible. In this paper, we propose a model for power system restoration considering CHP systems and renewable energy sources as being available in blackout states. We define a control variable representing a level of balance between the distance and importance of loads according to the importance and urgency of the affected customer. Dynamic power flow is considered in order to find feasible sequence and combination of loads for load restoration.

Renewable energy systems have become common in power systems. Many problems associated with connecting a renewable energy system to utility network have arisen. In the traditional power calculation, the resistance of the line is ignored because of large the X/R ratio. However, the R/X ratio in the distribution network is greater than in transmission. Because of that, the line resistance should be considered in the power calculations. In this paper, the effect of the grid resistance on transfer of power is investigated by calculating the active power between a PV system and the grid where the grid resistance is included. Two models were developed to study the effects of the grid resistance. The sensitivity of real and reactive power to the grid impedance, the current performance and the phase angle for the maximum power were studied under variations of the grid resistance. The results from both models have been compared to emphasize that the transfer of power is really influenced by the resistance of the line impedance.

Recently, a lot of PV power systems ranging from 1MW to 10MW have been built in China. However, the power grid can’t accept so much PV power because of their oscillated output power. PV systems are affected by the weather condition a lot, such as the sunlight and the temperature. Embedding energy storage system into PV system could improve the grid-access performance of PV systems as well as expand the functions of original PV systems, including regulating power quality of grid. In this paper, PV-storage topology is presented and the flow direction control (FDC) method is described. Based on the operation data of a 100kW PV system in a certain place of China, simulation studies are performed. The result of simulation verifies the possibility and necessity of building the energy storage system in the PV system. With the decline of the cost of energy storage system and PV system, the development of renewable energy in China will be accelerated and supported by the combination of PV system and energy storage system.

This paper presents photovoltaic system as a stand-alone electric power plant in the renewable energy development. To maximize these stand-alone generators, it is necessary to design photovoltaic modeling to produce energy and maximum power. The problems that exist in the design of PV systems are PV configuration, battery size, and the maximum power system. Therefore, this research will be proposed modeling Matlab/Simulink based PV system. The contribution of this research can provide various characteristics of the photovoltaic system with a capacity of 100 Wp. This modeling is designed using Matlab/Simulink software. The data generated from this simulation will provide a good reference for designing the stand-alone generators in the future.

As the solar PV technology continues to evolve as the most common distributed generation (DG) coupled with increasing interconnection requests, accurate modelling of the potential operational impacts of this game-changer is pivotal in order to maintain the reliability of the electric grid. The overall goal of this research is to conduct an interconnection impact analysis of solar PV systems at increasing penetration levels subject to the feeder constraints within the distribution network. This is carried out with a time series power flow analysis method to capture the time-varying nature of solar PV and load with their interactions with the distribution network device operations. Also, this thesis analyses multiple PV systems scenarios and a wide range of possible impacts to enable distribution system planners and operators understand and characterize grid operations with the integration of PV systems. An evaluation of the operational and reliability performance of a grid-connected PV system based on IEC standards and industry guides is performed to detect design failures and avoid unnecessary delays to PV penetration. The performance analysis metrics in this research allow cross-comparison between PV systems operating under different climatic conditions. This thesis shows the significant impact of temperature on the overall performance of the PV system. This research conducts an interconnection study for spatially distributed single-phase grid-tied PV systems with a five minute-resolution load and solar irradiance data on a typical distribution feeder. Also, this research compares the performance of generator models, PQ and P |V |, for connecting PV-DG with the distribution feeder with their respective computational costs for a converged power flow solution. More so, a method capable of computing the incremental capacity additions, measuring risks and upgrade deferral provided by PV systems deployments is investigated in this research. This thesis proposes surrogate metrics, energy exceeding normal rating and unserved energy, for evaluating system reliability and capacity usage which can be a very useful visualization tool for utilities. Also, sensitivity analysis is performed for optimal location of the PV system on the distribution network. This is important because optimal integration of PV systems is often near-optimal for network capacity relief issues as well. This thesis models the impact of centralized PV variability on the electric grid using the wavelet variability model (WVM) which considers the key factors that affect PV variability such as PV footprint, density and cloud movement over the entire PV plant. The upscaling advantage from a single module and point irradiance sensor to geographic smoothing over the entire PV footprint in WVM is used to simulate effects of a utility-interactive PV system on the distribution feeder. Further, the PV interconnection scenarios presented in this thesis have been modelled with different time scales ranging from seconds to hours in order to accurately capture and represent various impacts. The analysis and advancements presented in this thesis will help utilities and other stakeholders to develop realistic projections of PV systems impacts on the grid. Also, this research will assist in understanding and full characterization of PV integration with the grid to avoid unnecessary delays.
