Abstract: Wind energy is one of the most important and promising sources of renewable energy all over the world. Throughout the globe, in the last, three- or four-decades generation of electricity from wind energy has created a wide interest. At the same time, there has been a rapid development of wind energy-related technology. The control and estimation of wind energy conversion systems constitute a vast subject and are more complex than those of dc drives. Induction generators are widely preferable in wind farms because of their brushless construction, robustness, low maintenance requirements, and self-protection against short circuits. Low cost, robustness, and ease of maintenance are attractive features of induction generators. With wind turbine and micro/mini-hydro generators as an alternative energy source, the induction generators are being considered as an alternative choice to well-developed synchronous generators because of their simplicity, ruggedness, little maintenance, price, brushless (in squirrel cage construction), absence of separate dc source, self-protection against severe overloads and short circuits. In isolated systems, squirrel cage induction generators with capacitor excitation, known as self-excited induction generators (SEIGs), are very popular. This paper presents a review of literature related to the present status of research work on self-excited induction generators (SEIG), their terminal voltage control strategies, and over the past years discussing the classification of induction generators, steady-state and transient analysis, voltage control aspects, and parallel operation of SEIG.

Fossil fuels have been used extensively all over the world to satisfy energy demands. However, their availability is limited and their negative impact on the environment undeniable. Due to this, the need to develop alternative energy resources was recognized a few decades ago. Among different alternatives that have been developed, wind energy appears as a promising option to be implemented in many parts of the world. Nonetheless, its development and the cost per kW are still higher than that from fossil fuels. The intermittence of its capability to produce energy and the size of the wind power plant (as compared to a coal or nuclear power plant of the same energy output) have not made its implementation easier. In order to make wind energy more competitive and attractive to investors, new energy systems are desired. Specifically, it is desired to have a higher energy output. In this study a brimmed-diffuser shroud was incorporated into a 1 kW wind turbine. The turbine was then evaluated under fluctuating wind conditions. The experiments were conducted at the large boundary wind tunnel of Kyushu University. It is shown that power output increases for a fluctuating flow as opposed to a steady flow. The turbine power output is capable of following the changes in the wind speed accurately in the range of wind speed fluctuations tested. This is shown by correlation analysis and supported by the frequency spectrum. This study is part of a larger research work aimed at evaluating a novel wind turbine design. The current results are very encouraging. Possible wind sites of wind speed average lower than the current minimum accepted values can be exploited by using a turbine like the one evaluated in this work.

Abstract Value based services are the new emerging area in Indian Electricity Market. Technically, such value added services in the electricity market are known as Ancillary Services. Voltage Control Ancillary Service (VCAS) deals with local level voltage control problem of power sector. According to IEEE standards 1159:1995, 1250:2011, only ±5% voltage variation is allowed with almost 0 deviations in frequency (±0.03% maximum variation limit) to interconnect any new generating plant with a grid. The utilization of squirrel cage induction generators (SCIG) as wind operated micro grid may be in a fix without adequate availability of reactive power. Besides SCIG, load changes also cause voltage varying problems and so, this paper investigates how load change can be coped up with fast acting reactive power compensator for such arrangements. To demonstrate this real time Simulink models for fixed capacitor and STATCOM are developed using MATLAB software. The SCIG starting and load change conditions are tested with fixed capacitor, six and 12 pulse STATCOM as reactive power compensators. The SCIG performances in terms of rotor speed, voltage, and frequency control characteristics during starting of the machine as well as at the time of load perturbation are compared.

The article considers the legal basis for the formation and development of the country's energy sector, in particular, the issue of energy production from renewable sources, among which the leading place belongs to wind energy. The tendencies of the world energy market, which minimize the negative impact on the environment, as well as the tendencies of development of this branch in Ukraine are investigated. It was stated that for our country wind energy is one of the strategic directions of development of the sector of alternative energy sources, given the high dependence of the country on imported energy, primarily natural gas, and significant potential for wind power, taking into account the location, climate and terrain. However, unfortunately, the pace of development of wind energy in Ukraine still lags significantly behind European ones. It is noted that the legislative provision of the use of wind energy in Ukraine as a source of alternative energy is characterized primarily by the number of bylaws, general declarative legislation, as well as some inconsistencies in legal regulation. An analysis of current legislation and a number of regulations governing the development of the industry in general and wind energy in particular. A review of the norms that relate purely to the issues of the research area and their features and direction of legal regulation. In addition, it was stressed that Ukraine's accession to European initiatives, as well as borrowing international experience in this area should positively affect the energy balance and ensure the development of the sector, in particular, in the light of the need to create a full competitive environment in Ukraine's energy market; changes in heat generation by renewable energy sources and the full transformation of coal regions, which means the gradual closure of unprofitable enterprises with the parallel creation of alternative jobs in these regions.

Hydrogen as a clean alternative energy carrier for the future is required to be produced through environmentally friendly approaches. Use of renewables such as wind energy for hydrogen production is an appealing way to securely sustain the worldwide trade energy systems. In this approach, wind turbines provide the electricity required for the electrolysis process to split the water into hydrogen and oxygen. The generated hydrogen can then be stored and utilized later for electricity generation via either a fuel cell or an internal combustion engine that turn a generator. In this study, techno-economic evaluation of hydrogen production by electrolysis using wind power investigated in a windy location, named Binaloud, located in north-east of Iran. Development of different large scale wind turbines with different rated capacity is evaluated in all selected locations. Moreover, different capacities of electrolytic for large scale hydrogen production is evaluated. Hydrogen production through wind energy can reduce the usage of unsustainable, financially unstable, and polluting fossil fuels that are becoming a major issue in large cities of Iran.

2020 is a jubilee year for Kharkiv National University of Civil Engineering and Architecture. The article is devoted to the analysis and presentation of the main pages of the University history. Emphasis is placed on the causes and peculiarities of the events that are connected with the foundation of the building institute in 1930. Among the basic stages of history, the attention is drawn to its creation and importance of preparation of qualified personnel of builders and architects during industrialization; features of work of institute during the Second World War and during post-war restoration; rapid development of KHIBI in 1950th – opening of new specialities and formation of scientific schools, expansion of a contingent of students, including the beginning of preparation of foreign listeners is marked. In the following decades there was a steady development and expansion of the structure of the university, cooperation with foreign higher educational institutions, introduction of scientific achievements of teachers of the institute into production. At the time of Ukraine's independence, new tendencies in higher education (humanization of the scientific process, introduction of new methods of teaching and control of students' knowledge, activation of research work in accordance with the requirements of national and world science, etc.) are being implemented – granting the status of a university, and later the status of a national university. The author notes the main achievements of the University during the leadership of each of the directors / rectors of KHIBI – KHTUBA – KHNUBA. The prospects of KHIBI development are determined by its high status of a higher educational institution in the architectural and construction area of modern Ukraine and the potential of its staff. At the end of the article it is concluded that the university has an outstanding history, which was created by teachers, scientists, employees, students and graduates of the university, each of whom made a significant contribution to the achievements of our Alma Mater.
