Fifty-two subjects, high or low in levels of self-disclosure and disclosure flexibility, were selected (from a larger sample of 139) to test the effects of similarity and actual levels of disclosure and disclosure flexibility on perceptions of interpersonal attraction and social adjustment. Subjects rated protocols contrived to be similar! dissimilar in disclosure and in disclosure flexibility levels to that of the subject. Results generally confirmed the hypotheses and found: 1) a similarity effect for disclosure flexibility. 2) highest adjustment ratings for medium-high disclosure and high disclosure flexibility protocols; 3) actual disclosure level as a more potent determinant of perceived adjustment and attraction than was similarity in disclosure level; and 4) no discrimination of judgments by individuals low in disclosure flexibility.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the frequency and nature of pain in dreams. Several authors have suggested that pain may be beyond the representational capability of dreaming.OBJECTIVE: To obtain more detailed information on the nature and prevalence of pain in a larger sample of everyday dreams collected through home logs. To examine the context within which dreamed pain occurs and to assess participants' retrospective recall of past experiences of pain in dreams.METHOD: One hundred and eighty-five participants completed a battery of questionnaires and recorded their dreams for two consecutive weeks.RESULTS: Retrospective responses to the questionnaire indicate that close to 50% of individuals report having experienced pain in their dreams at least once. A total of 3045 dreams were reported in the home dream logs. Eighteen of these dreams contained unambiguous references to the subject experiencing pain.DISCUSSION: Pain sensations in dreams are reported as being realistic, localized to a specific area of the body, typically resulting from violent encounters with other characters and often accompanied by intense affect. A model is proposed to explain how sensory experiences such as pain can be produced in the dream state.CONCLUSION: Cognitive systems that contribute to the representation of pain imagery are sometimes functional during dreaming.

The purpose of this study is to find out how to adjust to adolescents who have to face the divorce of their parents, find out the impact of parental divorce for adolescents, and also understand how the psychological dynamics of the research subjects. The subjects in this study were two adolescents who fulfilled the predetermined research subject criteria, namely facing divorce from parents and taken with a purposive sampling technique. This study uses a qualitative phenomenological method. The results of this study indicate that all research subjects develop poor relationships outside the home, difficulty in getting along due to hampered social adjustment. Divorce of parents also raises a lot of anxiety and frustration in adolescents and reduce academic achievement in school. In addition, divorce that occurs in parents also makes children build feelings of being hurt, neglected, and betrayed by their parents. However, there seems to be a quite striking difference regarding the development of adjustment that occurs in each subject. One subject showed a better adjustment. This condition seems influenced by his ability to apply coping stress appropriately, namely trying to accept the divorce of parents and not thinking about the divorce (emotional focused coping). In addition, the parents of the subject also did not show conflict in front of their children despite the divorce.
