Psychometric Properties of the Chinese Perceived Responses to Capitalization Attempts Scale

Capitalization is an interpersonal process where one shares personal positive events with others and receives benefits beyond that event's effect. The response a capitalizer perceives from the recipient determines the success of this process. The Perceived Responses to Capitalization Attempts Scale (PRCAS) is an English-language measure used to assess a capitalizer's perception of a recipient's responses. We tested the factor structure, internal consistency reliability, and concurrent validity of the Chinese version of the PRCAS with a sample of 1,213 Chinese college students. Factor analyses replicated the 4-factor model of active–constructive response, passive–constructive response, active–destructive response, and passive–destructive response. All subscales possessed satisfactory internal consistency and evidence for concurrent validity with measures of feeling, flourishing, self-esteem, and mental health symptoms. We also assessed the test–retest stability of the PRCAS with a separate sample of 119 Chinese college students, and found that the subscales possessed low test–retest reliability. Therefore, the Chinese PRCAS possessed acceptable psychometric properties.

BACKGROUND eHealth literacy (EHL) refers to a mixture of capabilities that enable individuals to deal with health information via e-approach, and apply it to solve health problems. With the digitization of health care and the wide availability of health applications, a more diverse range of eHealth skills is required to properly use such health facilities. Existing EHL measurements focus mainly on the health skill of information obtaining (Web 1.0), yet skills of online interactivities (Web 2.0) and self-data managing and applying (Web 3.0) have not been well measured. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to (1) develop a measurement of EHL comprising a comprehensive spectrum of Web 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 skills (eHLS-Web3.0) and (2) evaluate its validity and reliability along with the measurement invariance among college students. METHODS In Study 1, 421 Chinese college students (mean age = 20.5 ± 1.4 years; 51.8% female) and 8 health experts (mean age =38.3 ± 5.9 years; 87.5% female) were involved to develop the eHLS-Web3.0. The scale development included three steps: item pool generation, content validation, and exploratory factor analysis (EFA). In Study 2, 741 college students (mean age = 21.3 ± 1.4 years; 52.2% female) were recruited from four Chinese cities to validate the new-developed eHLS-Web3.0. The construct validity, convergent validity, concurrent validity, internal consistency reliability, test-retest reliability, and measurement invariance across gender, major, and region were examined by a series of statistical analyses, including confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and multi-group CFA analysis with SPSS 25.0 and Mplus 7. RESULTS Based on the item pool of 374 statements collected during the conceptual developments, 24 items (4~10 items per subscale) were generated and adjusted after cognitive testing and content validity examination. Through the EFA, we finally developed a three-factorial eHLS-Web3.0, including Acquisition (8 items), Verification (6 items), and Application (10 items). In Study 2, CFAs supported the construct validity of the 24-item three-dimensional eHLS-Web3.0 (χ2 = 903.076, χ2/df =3.701, CFI = .924, TLI = .914, RMSEA = .060, SRMR = .051). The average variance extracted (AVE) of .58 and high correlation between eHLS-Web3.0 subscales and eHEALS (r = .725- .880, P < .001) supported good convergent validity and concurrent validity of the eHLS-Web3.0. Results also supported satisfactory internal consistency reliability (α = .976, ρ = .934 - .956) and test-retest reliability (r = .858, P < .001) of the scale. Multi-group CFAs demonstrated that the 24-item eHLS-Web3.0 to be invariant at all configural, metric, strong, and structural levels across gender (female/male), major (sport-related/medical/general), and region (Yinchuan/Kunming/Xiamen/Beijing). CONCLUSIONS The 24-item three-dimensional eHLS-Web3.0 is developed and verified to be a reliable and valid measurement of EHL in Web 3.0 context among Chinese college students.

We evaluated the psychometric properties of the Chinese Precursors to Boredom Scales (C-PBS) with a sample of Chinese college students. The results show that the C-PBS had acceptable internal consistency reliability and criterion validity, and that the eight-factor model fit the data well. We also investigated the characteristics of precursors to boredom in Chinese college students. Apart from one factor (being underchallenged), all precursors were significantly and negatively correlated with students' self-efficacy for self-regulated learning, and with academic achievement. It is notable that low-income (vs. high-income) students who were bored during mathematics classes felt less monotomy, lack of meaning, and oppurtunity costs. The C-PBS is, thus, a relevant instrument for the investigation of precursors to boredom in Chinese college students.

Alexithymia is defined as the lack of words to describe emotions and is associated with different psychopathologies. Various tools have been developed for measuring alexithymia; each has its limitations. A new questionnaire, Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire (PAQ), was developed to simultaneously assess positive and negative dimensions. Validation of such a tool in different cultures allows cross-cultural health psychology studies and facilitates knowledge transfer in the field. We aimed to examine the psychometric features of the PAQ in the Farsi-speaking population in Iran. Four-hundred-twenty-nine university students were asked to complete the PAQ, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and emotion regulation questionnaire (ERQ). Concurrent validity, discriminant validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability and factor structure were investigated. Confirmatory factor analysis showed a five-factor model identical to the original questionnaire. The questionnaire indicated good internal consistency (0.82 &lt; α &lt; 0.94). Test-retest reliability was acceptable for all subscales. The correlations between PAQ and its subscales with BDI-II, BAI, and TAS, and expression suppression subscale of ERQ were strong for concurrent validity. Concerning the discriminant validity, PAQ and its subscales were not correlated with reappraisal subscales of ERQ. The present findings suggest that the Farsi version of PAQ has strong psychometric properties and is appropriate for use in the Farsi-speaking population.

The purpose of this study was to create a valid and reliable instrument to evaluate theory-basedbeliefs towards physical activity among clergy members. Data were collected from 174 clergy that par-ticipated in a 15-item online and paper-based survey. Psychometric properties of the instrument includedconfirmatory factor analysis (construct validity), and cronbach’s alpha (internal consistency reliability).In addition, the stability (test-retest reliability) of each subscale was evaluated with a sub-sample of 30participants. Results show the instrument was both valid and reliable, and will be useful in future studiestargeting this population. Future implications are discussed.

Background: This study aimed to translate and validate the Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory (FCRI) questionnaire into Persian and to investigate its psychometric properties. Methods: The FCRI was translated to Persian using a linguistic methodology according to WHO guidelines. A total of 450 breast cancer survivors who had the following inclusion criteria were included: time elapse of more than six months after the treatment prior to the study; absence ofobjective markers of recurrence, fluency in the Persian language, and signing the informed consent. Internal consistency was estimated with Cronbach's α coefficient and test-retest reliability with Interclass correlation.  Concurrent validity was estimated through Pearson’s correlation between the FCRI and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Principal component analysis (PCA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were employed to evaluate dimensionality. Results: The Persian version was acceptable for patients. The content validity index (CVI) was 0.80.  The instrument had good test-retest reliability (ICC= 0.96) and internal consistency (Cronbach’s α=0.86).  PCA and CFA indicated that the factor structure of the Persian version was similar to the original questionnaire and had acceptable goodness of fit.  Correlations between the FCRI and HADS was remarkable (r= 0.252 – 0.639), indicating acceptable concurrent validity. Conclusions: The Persian version of FCRI could be considered a good cross-cultural equivalent for the original English version. The questionnaire was a reliable and valid instrument in terms of internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and dimensionality.

Abstract Background The Patterns of Activity Measure-Pain (POAM-P) is a self-report questionnaire that measures avoidance, overdoing, and pacing in individuals with chronic pain. We aimed to develop and confirm the psychometric properties of the Japanese version of the POAM-P(POAM-P-J) in Japanese individuals with chronic pain. Methods We recruited 147 Japanese individuals with chronic pain (106 women; mean age 64.89 ± 12.13 years). The individuals completed the POAM-P-J, the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The following psychometric properties of the POAM-P-J were confirmed: structural validity, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and concurrent validity. Results We tested factor structure via confirmatory factor analyses (CFA). We chose the 3-factor model with six covariances. The POAM-P-J’s internal consistency and test-retest reliability were acceptable to good (α = 0.79–0.86; ICC = 0.72–0.87). The avoidance and overdoing scales were positively associated with pain severity, pain interference, and anxiety measures (all p < 0.05), but the pacing scale was not significantly associated with these pain-related measures. Conclusions Although the structural validity of the POAM-P-J remains questionable, its internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and concurrent validity were confirmed. The POAM-P-J is useful in both research and clinical practice for evaluating the activity patterns of Japanese patients with chronic pain.

The study examines the factor structure, internal consistency, concurrent and discriminant validity, and test-retest reliability of the Exercise Dependence Scale-Revised scores (EDS-R: Symons-Downs, Hausenblas, & Niggs, 2004 ) in a sample of Greek exercise participants. The Greek translation of the EDS-R was completed by 581 exercise participants along with measures of exercise addiction. Confirmatory factor analysis provided support for the hypothesized EDS-R correlated 7-factor model along with evidence for strong item loadings and factor discriminant validity. Further evidence emerged in favor of the internal consistency, concurrent validity, and test-retest reliability of the translated EDS-R scores. The results provide initial support for various aspects of the validity and reliability of the translated-into-Greek EDS-R scores.

Background. The Preschool Activity Card Sort (PACS) is an interview-based assessment tool to measure participation of preschool children with age range from 3 to 6 years. Objective of Study. The purpose of this study was to establish the psychometric properties of the recently translated Arabic PACS (A-PACS). Methods. One hundred fifty-one Jordanian parents participated in the study representing different geographical areas. Children were almost equally distributed between males and females and into three age groups. Construct and concurrent validity were examined as well as the internal consistency of the scale and the test-retest reliability. Findings. The A-PACS was able to differentiate between the participation level of young and old children in the domains of education, community mobility, and low demand leisure of the A-PACS giving evidence to its construct validity and it significantly correlated with some aspects of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale (VABS) giving evidence to its concurrent validity. The A-PACS showed excellent overall internal consistency (α=.859) for all domains and good test-retest reliability (r=.976, p<.001). Conclusion. The A-PACS can be considered as a valid and reliable tool to measure participation of preschool children with normal development from Arabic cultures. Future studies should focus on the validity of the A-PACS for use with children with disabilities.

Objective: The purposes of this paper were to (a) develop a new short, theory-driven, version of the physical activity enjoyment scale (PACES-S) using content analysis; and (b) subsequently to measure the psychometric properties (construct validity, internal consistency, test–retest reliability, and concurrent validity) of the PACES-S for adolescents. Methods: Six experts used a four-point Likert scale to assess the content validity of each of the 16 items of the physical activity enjoyment scale according to a provided definition of physical activity enjoyment. Based on the results, exploratory factor analysis was used to analyze survey data from a longitudinal study of 182 individuals (Measure 1 of Study 1: 15.75 ± 3.39 yrs; 56.6% boys, 43.4% girls), and confirmatory factor analysis (Measure 2 of Study 1: 15.69 ± 3.44 yrs; 56.3% boys, 43.7% girls) was used to analyze the survey data from a cross-sectional study of 3219 individuals (Study 2; 15.99 ± 3.10 yrs; 47.8% boys, 52.2% girls) to assess the construct validity of the new measure. To assess the reliability, test–retest reliability was assessed in Study 1 and internal consistency in Study 1 and 2. For the concurrent validity, correlations with self-reported and device-based physical activity behavior were assessed in both studies. Results: Four out of sixteen items were selected for PACES-S. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analyses identified and supported its factorial validity (χ2 = 53.62, df = 2, p < 0.001; RMSEA = 0.073; CFI = 0.99; RFI = 0.96; NFI = 0.99; TLI = 0.96; IFI = 0.99). Results showed good test–retest reliability (r = 0.76) and internal consistency (a = 0.82 to 0.88). Regarding concurrent validity, the results showed positive correlations with a physical activity questionnaire (Study 1: r = 0.36), with a physical activity diary (Study 1: r = 0.44), and with accelerometer-recorded data (Study 1: r = 0.32; Study 2: r = 0.21). Conclusions: The results indicate that PACES-S is a reliable and valid instrument that may be particularly useful to measure physical activity enjoyment in large-scale studies. It shows comparable measurement properties as the long version of PACES.

Abstract Background The 7-item Gaming Addiction Scale (GAS) has been used as a screening tool for addictive game use worldwide, and this study aimed to examine its psychometric properties and measurement invariance among college students in China. Methods Full-time students from multiple colleges in China were recruited. A total of 1040 completed questionnaires were used in the final analysis. Reliability of the GAS was assessed by internal consistency and split-half reliability. Validity of the GAS was assessed by structural validity, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and concurrent validity. A series of Multigroup Confirmatory Factor Analysis (MG-CFA) were conducted to test and establish measurement invariance across gender, class standing, family income and parental educational level. Results Exploratory factor analysis revealed a unidimensional structure of the GAS. The GAS exhibited excellent internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.951, theta coefficient = 0.953, omega coefficient = 0.959) and structural validity (χ2 /df = 0.877 (p < 0.05), CFI = 0.999, TIL = 0.996, RMSEA =0.000). Concurrent validity of the GAS was confirmed by its correlation with problematic internet use, sleep quality, nine dimensions of psychiatric symptoms, and substance use. The GAS also demonstrated measurement invariance across father’s educational level (Δχ2 (df) = 19.128 (12), ΔCFI = − 0.009, ΔRMSEA = 0.010 for weak factorial model; Δχ2 (df) = 50.109 (42), ΔCFI = − 0.010, ΔRMSEA = 0.007 for strict factorial model.) and mother’s educational level (Δχ2 (df) = 6.679 (12), ΔCFI = 0.007, ΔRMSEA = − 0.010 for weak factorial model; Δχ2 (df) =49.131 (42), ΔCFI = − 0.009, ΔRMSEA = − 0.004 for strict factorial model), as well as partial measurement invariance across gender (except for item 2), class standing (except for item 7) and family income (except for item 5). Conclusions The Chinese version of the 7-item GAS can be an adequate assessment tool to assess internet gaming disorder among the college student population in China.
