The generation of Pareto optimal solutions for complex systems with multiple conflicting objectives can be easier if the problem can be decomposed and solved as a set of smaller coordinated subproblems. In this paper, a new decomposition-coordination method is proposed, where the global problem is partitioned into subsystems on the basis of the connection structure of the mathematical model, assigning a relative importance to each of them. In order to obtain Pareto optimal solutions for the global system, the aforementioned subproblems are coordinated taking into account their relative importance. The scheme that has been developed is an iterative one, and the global efficient solutions are found through a continuous information exchange process between the coordination level (upper level) and the subsystem level (lower level). Computational experiments on several randomly generated problem instances show that the suggested algorithm produces efficient solutions within reasonable computational times.

One of the most complex aspects of the veterinarian-client-patient interaction is the clinical decision-making process. Research suggests that the approach to communication used by veterinarians can impact veterinary clients’ involvement in the decision-making process and their ultimate satisfaction. Using different approaches to the decision-making process may affect how information is exchanged and consequently how decisions are made. The objective of this study was to determine pet owners’ expectations with respect to information exchange and decision-making during veterinarian-client-patient interactions and to compare veterinarians’ perceptions of those expectations and the challenges they face in meeting them. Five pet owner focus groups (27 owners) and three veterinarian focus groups (24 veterinarians) were conducted with standardized open-ended questions and follow-up probes. Thematic analysis of the transcribed data was conducted to identify trends and patterns that emerged during the focus groups. Three pet owner-based themes were identified: 1) understanding the client; 2) providing information suitable for the client; and 3) decision-making. In addition, three barriers for veterinarians affecting information exchange and decision-making were identified: 1) time constraints; 2) involvement of multiple clients; and 3) language barriers. Results suggest that pet owners expect to be supported by their veterinarian to make informed decisions by understanding the client’s current knowledge, tailoring information and educating clients about their options. Breakdowns in the information exchange process can impact pet owners’ perceptions of veterinarians’ motivations. Pet owners’ emphasis on partnership suggests that a collaborative approach between veterinarians and clients may improve client satisfaction.

Humans are quite successful at conveying ideas to each other and retrieving information from interactions appropriately. This is due to many factors: the richness of the language they share, the common understanding of how the world works, and an implicit understanding of everyday situations (Dey & Abowd, 1999). When humans talk with humans, they are able to use implicit situational information (i.e., context) to enhance the information exchange process. Context (Cool & Spink, 2002) plays a vital part in adaptive and personalized information retrieval and access. Unfortunately, computer communications lacks this ability to provide auxiliary context in addition to the substantial content of information. As computers are becoming more and more ubiquitous and mobile, there is a need and possibility to provide information “personalized, any time, and anywhere” (ITU, 2006). In these scenarios, large amounts of information circulate in order to create smart and proactive environments that will significantly enhance both the work and leisure experiences of people. Context-awareness plays an important role to enable personalized information retrieval and access according to the current situation with minimal human intervention. Although context-aware information retrieval systems have been researched for a decade (Korkea-aho, 2000), the rise of mobile and ubiquitous computing put new challenges to issue, and therefore we are motivated to come up with new solutions to achieve non-intrusive, personalized information access on the mobile service platforms and heterogeneous wireless environments.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to address challenges in the current information exchange process between building information modelling (BIM) and facilities management (FM) systems and to propose a workable solution. This study’s objective is to identify the information exchange requirements and to develop methods for seamless information flow between building information models and FM systems. Design/methodology/approach Data collection and analysis was based on an extensive literature review of similar studies followed by a questionnaire survey with a total of 112 participants and 2 focus groups with a total of 12 participants to validate the conceptual framework. The outputs of the survey analysis formed the background of the proposed framework to streamline information exchange process between building information models and FM systems. Findings The study findings form a foundation for enabling the integration of various data sources including building information models. Such integrated platforms will enable automated information exchange between the various data sources and FM systems. The study also provides key information requirements sources to complement the existing construction operations building information exchange information and to support standardization for information exchange process. Originality/value The contribution of this study is the identification of information exchange requirements and sources to enable seamless information flow between BIM and FM systems. The study findings will also lay the basis for research studies using the developed framework context to enable the identification of specific data outputs for FM systems inputs.

Internal erosion involves migration and loss of soil particles due to seepage. The process of fluid–solid interaction is a complex multiphase, coupled nonlinear dynamic problem. In this study, we used Particle Flow Code (PFC3D, three-dimensional PFC) software to model solid particles, and we applied computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the coarse mesh element method to solve the local Navier–Stokes equations. An information-exchange process for the PFC3D and CFD calculations was used to achieve fluid–solid coupling. We developed a numerical model for internal erosion of the soil and conducted relevant experiments to verify the usability of the numerical model. The mechanism of internal erosion was observed by analyzing the evolution of model particle migration, contact force, porosity, particle velocity, and mass-loss measurement. Moreover, we provide some ideas for improving the calculation efficiency of the model. This model can be used to predict the initiation hydraulic gradient and skeleton-deformation hydraulic gradient, which can be used for the design of internal erosion control.

Environmental issues can only be solved by coherent action at local, national and international levels, therefore understanding of the factors that influence the information exchange process is very important. The subject of investigation in this research is the influence of environmental information provided in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process on the level of knowledge concerning environmental issues in the local community. A survey of public opinion of the environmental impacts of the Port of Koper in Slovenia was performed. Results show that respondents did not find the EIA presentations effective and received more information from TV, newspapers and radio. The EIA process did not fulfil its' potential, since respondents express the highest trust in expert information, but the effectiveness of the expert part of the presentation is considered to be low, not reaching the media. By improving the presentations effectiveness in the EIA process, further efforts in informing public and employees could theoretically bring the opinions of both groups to a similar level of understanding.

In this paper, by analyzing the characteristics of data exchange process of SaaS-based collaboration supporting platform for industrial chain, a dynamic and secure business data exchange model for the platform is established. On this basis, methods for business data automatic obtain and format conversion, client authentication based on encryption lock and SOAP extension, business data encryption based on public key of the platform, and instant key created by client is discussed. The implementation of these methods is studied based on a .NET environment. Furthermore, the dynamic and secure business data exchange model is used in the SaaS platform of the automotive industry chain and SaaS platform of the injection industry chain, as it meets the multi-source and heterogeneous information exchange requirements.

Construction project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques related to project activities achieving the project requirements. Accurate and timely acquisition of the site data and information could improve the project management decision processes. However, obtaining the data and information in minimum possible time is the complex process due to nature of the construction site condition. There are several limitations with regards to the site data acquisition including, monitoring construction site, and sharing a daily status report. This study investigates the potential of using smartphone as a new technology in construction sites: (1) to improve monitoring and controlling the site activities; (2) to accelerate decisions making process by improving the speed and accuracy of information exchange process. This study provides an overview of the feasibility of using smartphones in three areas of project management knowledge, discussed in a Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), including time management, quality management and human resources management. Validation was conducted through the real case study based on the proposed scenarios. Return of investment and sensitivity analysis of the two scenarios were also compared to find the efficient scenario. The results of this study can be applied to improve the monitoring and understanding of the site status and can potentially facilitate the decision making process.
