AbstractSol-gel derived ceramic bubbles include shaped and fired, porous or impermeable nonvitreous ceramic microcapsules of metal oxide and non-oxide, are made by non-melt process involving the equilibrium boiling point method with controlled thermal gelation. Discrete, free-flowing, ceramic microbubbles consist of a non-oxide component and/or an oxide component having diameters in the range of I to 300 micrometers and each having a wall thickness of less than 10 percent of the diameter of the bubble. In this process, a sol precursor and a bloating agent, when added to a bubble promoting medium under proper conditions, provide green gelled microbubbles which after firing are strong, well formed, ceramic microbubbles. The microbubbles are non-vitreous, sol-gel derived, fine microstructured, uniform, hollow, smooth, and are essentially all oxide or non-oxide or combinations of both. The microbubbles can be used as fillers for metal, glass, ceramic, and polymer or filled with a selected solid, liquid or gas for purpose of storing, transporting, or facilitating the use of the same.

Multiferroic 0.6BaTiO3-0.4NiFe2O4dense nanoceramic composites were synthesized via a powder-in-sol precursor hybrid chemical synthesis route and a ceramic sintering process. At the measured frequency range (1 kHz~1 MHz), the relative dielectric constant is 150~1670 and the dielectric loss is 0.05~0.70. The composite ceramic showed obvious coexistence of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic phases. With the increase of temperature, the saturation ferromagnetic magnetization decreases, while the ferroelectric polarization increases.

Structure-tuned core/shell n-Si@n-Ta3N5 nanowires array heterojunction photoanodes were prepared on a wafer scale by electroless metal-assisted etching of an Si wafer, spin coating of a Ta(OC2H5)5 sol precursor solution, and ammonia treatment to convert it to Ta3N5.

In order to improve the oxidation resistance property of carbon/carbon composites, the C/C matrix was modified with a borate sol precursor and B4C micro-powders by a sol-gel integrating with a solvothermal process. The phase compositions, surface and cross-section microstructures of the C/C matrix modified by different B4C content were particularly investigated. Results show that the surface of the modified composites is covered by a coating composed of B2O3 and B4C, meanwhile, the internal micro-holes of the C/C composites are occupied by B2O3 and B4C. After oxidation in air at 973 K, the B2O3 glassy phase, due to the oxidation of B4C, seals the cracks and holes and effectively prevents C/C composites from oxidation. The weight loss of the modified C/C composites is only 2.21 % after oxidation in air at 973 K for 20 h.
