On March 6, 1972, sociologist Orlando Fals Borda, a native of Barranquilla, arrived in Monteria. He was commissioned by the Rosca Foundation for Research and Social Action to work on the Coast, based in Monteria. The work of Orlando Fals in the peasant movement of Cordoba was of a high-impact, but controversial and treated in an unjust manner. Although he worked especially with the managers and leaders of associations of the city of Monteria and in Cordoba department, its programs and actions affected the entire movement. However, Orlando had to live with many stigmas despite his explanations and open work done. Newly arrived from Bogota, I had references of some works of Orlando. When I realize that he was in Montería I looked for him, we talked several times, I felt identified with the plan he had and we decided to work together. It was this intense, creative and risky work which allowed me to get to know Orlando as a person, humanist and intellectual honest and committed.

ABSTRACTIn order to think the current culture, the communication practices, the incidence of interference image in the production of new types of knowledge, in this paper we will approach the relationship between image as cinematic apparatus and its conceptual, historical and technical aspects to analyze its performance as narration. In an era in which it appears that the images intervenes in consciousness and in the contemporary representation and thus is becoming an important device in the revelation of realities and the construction of the social imaginary, the present work analyzes the Brazilian film City of God, conducted by director Fernando Meirelles, in 2002, considered a landmark in Brazilian cinema of the period, by the boldness of the language used to convert to images the history of violent gangs fighting over the control of drug trafficking in a community of the city of Rio de Janeiro. We will try, then, to identify the techniques used by the camera as devices able to create the effects needed to immerse the viewer in the narrative of the film.RESUMOCom a preocupação de pensar a cultura atual, as práticas comunicacionais, a incidência da interferência da imagem na produção de novas formas de saber tentaremos abordar neste trabalho a relação da imagem como dispositivo cinematográfico e seus aspectos conceituais, históricos e técnicos para examinar a sua atuação como narração.

Sociabilidade. There is even research on the causes of low student performance in national tests and also on the meanings of schooling among young people belonging to poor classes. Our research dialogues with these issues, but the perspective is different. We analyze the "product" of these processes of schooling: poor youth with high school completed. They intend to join the University, but knows about the problems of your education. The investigation was conducted in the only popular “pré-vestibular” of the city of Petropolis, mountain region of Rio de Janeiro. They seek, in this place, school knowledge needed to the exams and also the support of other young people who are in the same situation. This process, which we call in another moment of "education out of school" is permeated by networks of solidarity, affection and sociability that contribute to the redefinition of life projects for young people. The school year allows experimentation with a series of collective experiences that redefine educational expectations and plans for the future. The process is added by different emotions, all narrated by the young students when they reconstruct their trajectories. This paper will examine these narratives focusing on the emotions associated with changes in perspective experienced by young people. Keywords: Youth. Education. Sociability. Sociabilidad. This paper discusses precarious workers in London. The aim is to consider the particular challenges and possibilities for resistance in the context of London. It addresses the theoretical questions of precarity and its significance in post-Fordist capitalism. The innovations of the Operaismo—in terms of workers’ inquiries, the concept of class composition and the strategy of refusal—provide the theoretical basis for the paper. The paper draws on two examples of recent struggles on university campuses, that of casual teaching staff and cleaners, which highlight different points. The first is that a method inspired by the tradition of the workers’ inquiry can provide an important starting point for a campaign, combining knowledge production and a project of organisation. This is illustrated with the use of surveys as a starting point for a campaign at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies), University of London. The second example draws on the experience of the cleaners’ campaigns at the University of London. The history of the dispute is considered along with the use of the London living wage and alternative forms of trade unionism. This paper argues that the particular pressures for precarious workers in London need to be considered, but could also be posed as potential demands from workers, drawing on Henri Lefebvre’s notion of ‘the right to the city’. The conclusion of the argument is a call for further research that is attentive to the new forms of organisation that are emerging from workers’ struggles and to how a consideration of urban demands could provide important opportunities for developing this further.

As community-university partnerships have become mainstream, researchers have argued that these approaches have the potential to be transformative, supporting community learning and creating capacity for community development. While this remains the dominant narrative of community research, some researchers have questioned the impacts of community research on frontline community, or peer, researchers who represent partnerships in their communities. These studies complicate the narrative, suggesting that learning and capacity building are not straightforward processes. While on the whole community-university partnerships tend to be empowering for community researchers, research is needed to understand the experiences of community researchers for whom this is not the case. My research examines a Toronto-based community-university participatory action research partnership, asking what community researchers learnt through their participation. I argue that, while community researchers learnt a great deal from their participation, the overall impact was not empowerment, but alienation. They did have their knowledge of community validated, and they built research skills, developed grievances through their conversations with neighbours and interrogated the links between grievances, all of which were important aspects of their participation. However, through the process they developed, or entrenched, a sense of powerlessness and dependence on the university researchers to take up their cause politically. This contradicts the aspirations of community-university partnership models, especially participatory action research, and raises questions about the inevitability of empowering social action stemming from these research projects. I argue that the disempowerment that the community researchers reported points to the need for community research to be embedded within existing social action organisations and infrastructure to provide clearer pathways to action because, without this, peer researchers may become overwhelmed by the scope of the grievances in their neighbourhoods and withdraw from, rather than embrace, the need for collective social action.

The article analyzes the adhesion of the youth to religious groups and their forms of social action, in the Weberian molds, in contemporary times. Taking as a reference the Catholic-charismatic youth groups in the universities, the article seeks to understand: the functional dynamics of these charismatic youth groups; the general aspects of the social action of these young people in their areas of operation; and the characteristics of the groups operating in the city of Goiânia, mainly in UFG. The faithful analyzed are the participants of Catholic youth groups of the age group from 18 to 30 years, with predominant attention to those attending the activities directed to youth of the universities. The participants of the University Prayer Groups have non-conventional forms of collective action, configuring themselves as a new modality of social practices in the interior of the student life that require the attention of the studies on youth. How recent are the work and debates about University social action aimed at studying the plurality of way of being young in higher education (in addition to the student movement), to turn to the examination of religious issues among students, the article seeks to contribute to the expansion of the understanding of this time in the life cycle.
