ABSTRACTIn order to think the current culture, the communication practices, the incidence of interference image in the production of new types of knowledge, in this paper we will approach the relationship between image as cinematic apparatus and its conceptual, historical and technical aspects to analyze its performance as narration. In an era in which it appears that the images intervenes in consciousness and in the contemporary representation and thus is becoming an important device in the revelation of realities and the construction of the social imaginary, the present work analyzes the Brazilian film City of God, conducted by director Fernando Meirelles, in 2002, considered a landmark in Brazilian cinema of the period, by the boldness of the language used to convert to images the history of violent gangs fighting over the control of drug trafficking in a community of the city of Rio de Janeiro. We will try, then, to identify the techniques used by the camera as devices able to create the effects needed to immerse the viewer in the narrative of the film.RESUMOCom a preocupação de pensar a cultura atual, as práticas comunicacionais, a incidência da interferência da imagem na produção de novas formas de saber tentaremos abordar neste trabalho a relação da imagem como dispositivo cinematográfico e seus aspectos conceituais, históricos e técnicos para examinar a sua atuação como narração. Numa era em que se constata que as imagens intervêm na consciência e na representação contemporâneas e, portanto, vêm se impondo como um dispositivo importante na revelação de realidades e na construção do imaginário social, o presente artigo visa analisar o filme brasileiro Cidade de Deus, realizado pelo diretor Fernando Meirelles, em 2002, considerado um marco no cinema brasileiro do período, pela ousadia da linguagem utilizada para converter em imagens a história de gangues violen-tas em disputa pelo controle do tráfico de drogas em uma comunidade da cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Tentaremos, então, identificar as técnicas usadas pela câmera como dispositivos capazes de criar os efeitos necessários para imergir o especta-dor na narrativa do filme.

The city of Rio de Janeiro underwent profound changes between 1870 and the early 20th century. Its population grew dramatically, attracting migrants not only from abroad but also from other regions of Brazil. It also expanded significantly in size, as the construction of trolley and railway lines and the introduction of real estate capital powered the occupation of new areas. Meanwhile, urban reforms aimed at modernization transformed the social ways in which urban space was used. During this period, Rio de Janeiro went from being the capital of the Brazilian Empire to being the capital of the Brazilian Republic. It nevertheless maintained its position as the cultural, political-administrative, commercial, and financial center of the country. Against this backdrop of change, the city was an important arena for the political struggles that marked the period, including demonstrations in favor of abolition and the republic. Rio de Janeiro’s citizens were not inert during this period of transformation, and they found various ways to take action and fight for what they understood to be their rights. Protests, demands, petitions, and a vibrant life organized around social and political associations are examples of the broad repertoire used by the city’s inhabitants to gain a voice in municipal affairs. Citizens’ use of public demands and petitions as a channel to communicate with the authorities, and especially with city officials, shows that while they did not necessarily shun formal politics, they understood politics to be a sphere for dialogue and dispute. The sociocultural history of Rio de Janeiro during this period was therefore built precisely through confrontations and negotiations in which the common people played an active role.

Drawing the city is a proposal for an ethnographic research project in Rio de Janeiro. I begin by mapping the production of an international group calling themselves ‘urban sketchers,' whose collective project extols drawing as a form of looking, knowing and registering the experience of living in cities. Next I show the connections between art and anthropology, as well as their relation to cities and to Rio de Janeiro in particular. The sources and bibliography on the themes of the social history of art, drawing, visual anthropology and urban anthropology are also discussed. Setting out from the latter area, I present the possibilities for undertaking an ethnography that contributes to our comprehension of the graphic and symbolic narratives of urban life.

Este artigo busca descrever e analisar a atividade da pesca artesanal no município de Maricá (RJ), para chegar, finalmente, à discussão dos impactos socioambientais da expansão da Região Metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro sobre suas lagunas e restingas. O registro da evolução histórica da paisagem de Maricá, a partir da literatura dos viajantes – naturalistas e geógrafos–, desde o século XIX, constitui, juntamente com uma ampla discussão da natureza, dinâmica e perspectivas dos ambientes lacustres fluminenses, o cerne da proposta para uma etnografia de seu manejo, pelas comunidades de pescadores e pela engenharia sanitária e urbana, com suas distintas, conflitantes e concorrentes concepções dos mecanismos de seu funcionamento (estagnação versus circulação); nesse caso, analisa-se a relação do conjunto de lagunas como mar, ou seja, a questão das barras oceânicas permanentes versus barras oceânicas sazonais. Palavras-chave: comunidades pesqueiras; pesca lacustre; manejo de ecossistemas lacustres. Abstract: The article describes and analyzes small-scale non-industrial fishing in the city of Maricá. The final aim of this study is to discuss the social and environmental impact of Greater Metropolitan Rio de Janeiro on the Maricá region’s lagoons and saltmarshes. Registering the historical evolution of Maricá’s landscape, using literature written by traveling naturalists and geographers since the XIX Century, constitutes, together with an ample discussion of the nature, dynamics and perspectives of Fluminense lagoon environments, the core proposal of this ethnographical research is how a regional environment is handled by fishermen as well as sanitary and urban engineering with its distinct, conflicting and competing conceptions of operational mechanics (stagnation versus circulation) in this case, specifically, the relationship of the group of lagoons to the sea is analyzed, i.e., the problem of permanent oceanic bars versus seasonal sand bars. This audiovisual essay investigates the intermedial nature of Brazilian film comedies produced during the 1940s and 50s by exploring the musical numbers of Aviso aos navegantes (Calling All Sailors, Watson Macedo, 1950). Brazilian cinema of this period is a privileged arena of different media strategies. Its “mixed” style is informed by Hollywood cinema but also by the domestic influence of radio, Carnival, and by the local forms of comic staging of the teatro de revista (the Brazilian equivalent of music hall or vaudeville). Of particular interest in this regard are the chanchadas, a body of films made between the mid-1930s and the early 1960s, that presented musical performances intertwined with comic situations, slender narrative lines and strong connections with the world of Carnival. Our aim is to show how the relationships between the different forms of cultural production in 1950s Brazil can be identified in a specific chanchada, opening a dialogue between musical performances on stage, over the radio, at Carnival and on screen. The essay also examines similarities and differences between chanchadas and the Hollywood musical comedy tradition. One area explored is integration, both in the sense in which it is often used in film studies, to discuss the relationship between the numbers and the narrative, and in reflecting on whether the different elements which feed into the numbers of Aviso aos navegantes are seamlessly combined in the film. Despite the huge popular success of his films, Watson Macedo was considered by many as the most “Americanised” of the directors of that period, adhering less to the critical mechanisms of parody than was the case with his contemporaries. However, if we pay attention to Macedo’s musical numbers, it is evident that these performances are not imperfect copies of Hollywood originals, but have a logic of their own. This audiovisual essay complements Flávia Cesarino Costa’s other contribution to this issue of Alphaville, the article “Building an Integrated History of Musical Numbers in Brazilian Chanchadas”, by exploring related ideas in the context of a single film. As well as the interest of the video essay’s own exploration and argument, the pairing of essays—traditional and videographic—enables readers of this issue to pursue their thinking about chanchadas and intermediality with specific audiovisual material in front of them

O papel primordial da água nas paisagens do estuário guajarino, situado na foz do rio Amazonas, convida à investigação acerca da memória das comunidades ribeirinhas da cidade de Belém. Através da observação etnográfica das paisagens ribeirinhas do Porto do Sal, situado no centro histórico da cidade, analiso a relação dos habitués do lugar com o ambiente que, neste caso, representa a zona mestiça de água e de terra que define o lugar. A relação íntima e própria dos habitués do Porto do Sal com a baía influencia diretamente suas relações sociais dinâmicas e as suas expressões imaginárias. A partir da perspectiva da Antropologia Urbana e de acordo com uma abordagem “sensível” desenvolvida por Pierre Sansot (1973), realizada principalmente por meio das artes visuais é possível identificar aspectos do cotidiano de tais pessoas junto ao Porto do Sal e ao Rio Guamá, bem como as formas sociais que unem os sujeitos entre si e ao meio. A proposta de construção de uma reflexão considera o ambiente como elemento da experiência estética e ética com o lugar, com destaque ao registro sensorial na forma de habitar o mundo urbano e de senti-lo nos gestos mais cotidianos e no estar-junto em relação (Maffesoli, 1999; 2010), configurando as paisagens ribeirinhas da urbe na Cidade Velha. A descrição etnográfica visa produzir imagens do Porto do Sal enquanto um conjunto de paisagens com a intenção de estimular a reflexão sobre o imaginário no contexto amazônico, especialmente do mundo urbano belemense. Palavras chaves: Paisagens. Arte.  Digging waters and exploring Porto do Sal: Essays on an ethnographic itineraryAbstractThe importance of water in the estuary landscapes of the Guajará Bay invites us to investigate the memory of the riverine communities of the city of Belém, Northern Brazil. Through an ethnographic observation of the riverine community of Porto do Sal, I propose to analyze the relationship of the inhabitants with their environment, in this case the encounter of water and land in the urban environment of Belém. The intimate relationship of the habitués of Porto do Sal with the Guajará Bay directly influences their social relations and imaginary expressions. From the perspective of urban anthropology and according to Pierre Sansot’s sensitive approach (1973), I propose a reflection that considers the environment as an aesthetic and ethic experience with the place based on a definition of the landscape as a phenomenon that originates from the human experience in the world. I put a particular emphasis on the sensitive register of the daily experience of the urban world, on the day-to-day gestures and the “being-together” (Maffesoli, 1999; 2010) that are specific to riverine landscapes of the waterside of Belém’s old port. In this case, the ethnographic description aims to produce images of Porto do Sal as an ensemble of landscapes, with the intention to stimulate reflection about the social imaginary in the Amazon region, specifically in the urban environment of Belém. Key words: Landscapes. The qualitative and clear definition of the legal regime of the capital of Ukraine, the hero city of Kyiv, is influenced by its legislative enshrinement, however, it should be noted that discussions are ongoing and one of the reasons for the unclear legal status of the capital is the ambiguity of current legislation in this area. Separation of the functions of the city of Kyiv, which are carried out to ensure the rights of citizens of Ukraine and the functions that guarantee the rights of the territorial community of the city of Kyiv. In the modern world, in legal doctrine and practice, the capital is understood as the capital of the country, which at the legislative level received this status and, accordingly, is the administrative and political center of the state, which houses the main state bodies and diplomatic missions of other states. It is the identification of the boundaries of the relationship between the competencies of state administrations and local self-government, in practice, often raises questions about their delimitation and ways of regulatory solution. Peculiarities of local self-government in Kyiv city districts are defined in the provisions of the Law on the Capital, which reveal the norms of the Constitution in these legal relations, according to which the issue of organizing district management in cities belongs to city councils. Likewise, it is unregulated by law to lose the particularity of the legal status of the territory of the city. It should be emphasized that the subject of administrative-legal relations is not a certain administrative-territorial entity, but the social group is designated - the territorial community of the city of Kiev, kiyani. Thus, the provisions on the city of Kyiv partially ignore the potential of the territorial community.

The aim of the study. Assess the importance of pregravid preparation and outcomes of pregnancy and childbirth, depending on the reproductive attitudes of women in the city of Omsk. Materials and methods. The study included 92 women who were divided into groups: group A (n=43) - women whose pregnancy was planned; group B (n=49) - women whose pregnancy occurred accidentally. Each group was divided into subgroups depending on age: from 18 to 30 and from 31 to 49 years. For each patient included in the study, a specially designed map was filled out. These patients were interviewed at the City Clinical Perinatal Center. Results. Comparative analysis revealed the relationship between the reproductive settings of women of childbearing age and the peculiarity of the course of pregnancy and childbirth in these patients. Summary. The majority of women of fertile age are married: in subgroup AA - 25 (96.2%), AB - 13 (76.5%), BA - 25 (92.6%), BB - 20 (91.0%). The predominant number of women of fertile age have one or more abortions: in subgroup AA - 12 (46.2%), AB - 6 (35.3%), in subgroups of comparison BA - 8 (29.6%), BB - 6 (27.3%). More than half of the women of fertile age surveyed have a history of untreated cervical pathology (from 40.8% to 64.7%). The course of pregnancy in women planning pregnancy in most cases proceeded without complications: in subgroup AA - 13 (50.0%), AB - 11 (64.7%). The most common cause of complicated pregnancy in women whose pregnancy occurred accidentally is the threat of spontaneous miscarriage: in subgroup BA - 15 (55.6%), BB - 16 (72.7%). The uncomplicated course of labor more often [subgroup AA - 19 (73.0%), AB - 12 (70.6%)] was observed in women whose pregnancy was planned and they were motivated to give birth to a healthy child.

This book analyses the physical, social, and cultural history of Rome in late antiquity. Between AD 270 and 535, the former capital of the Roman empire experienced a series of dramatic transformations in its size, appearance, political standing, and identity, as emperors moved to other cities and the Christian church slowly became its dominating institution. Urban Space and Aristocratic Power in Late Antique Rome provides a new picture of these developments, focusing on the extraordinary role played by members of the traditional elite, the senatorial aristocracy, in the redefinition of the city, its institutions, and spaces. During this period, Roman senators and their families became increasingly involved in the management of the city and its population, in building works, and in the performance of secular and religious ceremonies and rituals. As this study shows, for approximately three hundred years the houses of the Roman elite competed with imperial palaces and churches in shaping the political map and the social life of the city. Making use of modern theories of urban space, the book considers a vast array of archaeological, literary, and epigraphic documents to show how the former centre of the Mediterranean world was progressively redefined and controlled by its own elite.

In the history of urban thought, density has been closely indexed to the idea of citylife. Drawing on commuters’ experiences and perceptions of crowds in and around Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station, this article offers an ethnographic perspective on the relationship between urban crowds and life in the city. We advance understandings of the relations between the crowd and citylife through three categories of ‘crowd relations’– materiality, negotiation and inclusivity – to argue that the multiplicity of meanings which accrue to people’s encounters with crowds refuses any a priori definitions of optimum levels of urban density. Rather, the crowd relations gathered here are evocations of citylife that take us beyond the tendency to represent the crowd as a particular kind of problem, be it alienation, exhaustion or a threshold for ‘good’ and ‘bad’ densities. The portraits of commuter crowds presented capture the various entanglements between human and non-human, embodiment and mobility, and multiculture and the civic, through which citylife emerges as a mode of being with oneself and others.
