Introduction os spherical alloys particles (size range from 15 to 70 micra) in the back at the level of the first thoracic vertebra of 24 male rats, 60 days old, for a period of time of 12, 13, 14 and 15 months, shows no alteration in the connective tissue, striate muscle, fatty tissue, brown fatty tissue, nerve fibres and hair follicle.

The objective of this study was to evaluate whether demineralized bovine bone (Gen-ox®) alters bone neoformation in rats submitted to alcoholism. Forty male rats were separated into two groups of 20 rats and distributed as follows: Group E1, which received 25% ethanol and a surgical cavity filled only by a blood clot, and Group E2, which received 25% ethanol and a surgical cavity filled with Gen-ox®. The animals were euthanized at 10, 20, 40 and 60 days after surgery and necropsy was performed. The histomorphological and histometric analyses of the area of connective tissue and bone neoformation showed that the reorganization of the bone marrow and full repair of the surgical cavity in Group E1 occurred more quickly than in Group E2. It was also noted that in the final period the animals in Group E2 showed areas of connective tissue and thick bone trabeculae around the particles of the implant. It can be concluded that the use of Gen-ox® delayed the process of bone repair in alcoholic rats, although it can be used as filling material because it shows osteoconductive activity, as evidenced by bone tissue formation around the graft particles.

Herein, the structural effect of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on posttraumatic skeletal muscle regeneration in rats with chronic hyperglycemia (CH) was tested. 130 white laboratory male rats divided into four groups (I—control; II—rats with CH; III—rats with CH and PRP treatment; and IV—rats for CH confirmation) were used for the experiment. CH was simulated by streptozotocin and nicotinic acid administration. Triceps surae muscle injury was reproduced by transverse linear incision. Autologous PRP was used in order to correct the possible negative CH effect on skeletal muscle recovery. On the 28th day after the injury, the regenerating muscle fiber and blood vessel number in the CH+PRP group were higher than those in the CH rats. However, the connective tissue area in the CH group was larger than that in the CH+PRP animals. The amount of agranulocytes in the regenerating muscle of the CH rats was lower compared to that of the CH+PRP group. The histological analysis of skeletal muscle recovery in CH+PRP animals revealed more intensive neoangiogenesis compared to that in the CH group. Herewith, the massive connective tissue development and inflammation signs were observed within the skeletal muscle of CH rats. Obtained results suggest that streptozotocin-induced CH has a negative effect on posttraumatic skeletal muscle regeneration, contributing to massive connective tissue development. The autologous PRP injection promotes muscle recovery process in rats with CH, shifting it away from fibrosis toward the complete muscular organ repair.

The long-time severed and isolated intermediate and distal nerve segments, maintained undisturbed in their connective tissue bed, completely separated from each other and from the proximal stump, are repopulated by nerve-fibres which origin is still unknown. The extremities of such nerve segments present complex nervous nodules capped by fibrous tissue, neuroma-like structures.

ABSTRACT Laser and stretching are used to treat skeletal muscle injuries. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of GaAs laser and stretching in the morphology of the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle after contusion. Thirty-six male rats (349±23g) were divided into six groups (n=6): control group (CG); lesion group (LG); lesion and laser group (LLG); lesion and stretching group (LSG); lesion, laser and stretching group (LLSG); and stretching group (SG). TA was wounded by a contusion apparatus. We used GaAs laser 4.5 J/cm2 dose for 32 s each, beginning 48 h after lesion, for 7 days, once a day. Manual passive stretching was applied by 10 repetitions for 1 minute, initiating on the 8th day, once a day, 3 times a week, during 3 weeks. After 4 weeks, rats were euthanized and we analyzed: muscle weight and length, cross sectional area of muscle fibers (CSAMF), serial sarcomere number (SSN), sarcomere length, and percentage of connective tissue. Comparisons among groups were made by ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests, with the significance level set at ≤ 0.05. The serial sarcomere number of LLSG was higher than LSG. The sarcomere length of LSG was superior to LLG, LLSG, and SG. SG increased SSN compared to CG, while the percentage of connective tissue of SG decreased in comparison to LLSG. Thus, the sarcomerogenesis of injured muscles was enhanced by laser therapy, stretching, and association of both. The stretching protocol was enough to increase SSN of intact muscles.

AbstractThe obliteration of the frontal sinus via an osteoplastic approach is performed with the aim of achieving a permanent ‘switching off’ by final and conclusive clearing out. For this, freshly harvested abdominal fat has shown itself to be the best clinically. It is possible to demonstrate the vitality of fat transplanted into the frontal sinus without an operation i.e. by a macroscopical and histological examination using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The magnetic resonance examinations were carried out on a supraconductive 0.5 T Magnet (Gyroscan T.S.II, Philips Medicine Systems, Eindhoven, Netherlands) with a quadrature (square) head spool. We produced T1-weighted spin echo images (TR: 450–550 ms; TE: 20–25 ms), T2-weighted fast spin echo images or in double-echo technique in transverse orientation (Turbo SE or TR: 2000–2500 ms; TE: 50–90 ms) and short tau inversion recovery (STIR) sequences for fat suppression (TJ: 140 ms; TR: 1400 ms; TE: 30 ms). The fat implanted into the frontal sinus of 11 patients aged 22–65 years, having undergone an osteoplastic frontal sinus operation with obliteration, was examined post-operatively by MRI. Objectives were the time-dependent distribution of portions of vital fatty or connective tissue, the eventual development of necroses or cysts as well as recurrences, inflammatory complications or re-epithelization of the frontal sinus four to 24 months postoperatively. In only six out of 11 cases was vital fatty tissue found. Fatty necrosis occurred five times, whereas in four cases a transformation into granulation tissue and in one case into connective tissue could be seen. All 11 patients were complaint-free. Long-term observations are needed to see if differences in the recurrence rate of frontal sinus disease are dependent on whether the implanted fat remains vital or necrosed and transformed.

This paper describes the ontogeny, breakdown and absorption of the radular teeth of cephalopods and, for the first time, considers the function of the ‘bolsters’ or radular support muscles. The radular ribbon, which bears many regularly arranged transverse rows of teeth one behind the other, lies in a radular canal that emerges from the radular sac. Here the radular teeth are formed by a set of elongate cells with microvilli, the odontoblasts. These are organized into two layers, the outer producing the radular membrane and the bases of the teeth, the inner producing the cusps. The odontoblasts also secrete the hyaline shield and the teeth on the lateral buccal palps, when these are present. At the front end of the radular ribbon the teeth become worn in feeding and are replaced from behind by new ones formed continuously in the radular sac, so that the whole ribbon moves forward during ontogeny. Removal of the old teeth is achieved by cells in the radular organs; these cells, which are formed from modified odontoblasts (‘odontoclasts’), dissolve the teeth and membranes and absorb them. There is a subradular organ in all cephalopods. In Octopus vulgaris , which bores into mollusc shells and crustacean carapaces, it is especially well–developed and there is also a supraradular organ. A characteristic feature of the cephalopod radular apparatus is the pair of large radular support muscles or ‘bolsters’. Their function seems never to have been investigated, but experiments reported here show that when they elongate, the radular teeth become erect at the bending plane and splayed, presumably enhancing their ability to rake food particles into the pharynx. The bolsters of Octopus function as muscular hydrostats: because their volume is fixed, contraction of their powerful transverse muscles causes them to elongate. In decapods and in nautiloids each bolster contains a ‘support rod’ of semi–fluid material, as well as massive transverse musculature. This rod may elongate to erect the radular teeth. At the extreme front end of the bolsters in Octopus there are many nerve fibres that may constitute a receptor organ signalling the movements of the radula against hard material. Such nerves are absent from decapods and from octopods that do not bore holes. The buccal mass of Nautilus is massive, with heavily calcified tips to the beaks and a wide radular ribbon, with 13 rather than nine elements in each row. Nevertheless all the usual coleoid features are present in the radular apparatus and the teeth are formed and broken down in the same way. However, Nautilus has a unique structure, the radular appendage. This comprises a papillate mass extending over the palate in the mid–line and forming paired lateral masses that are in part secretory. The organ is attached to the front of the radula by muscles and connective tissue. Its function is unknown.

Topicality. Hypokinesia is a condition of insufficient motor activity of the body with limited pace and volume of movement, and is currently the fourth leading cause of endemic death in the world. It is known that hypokinesia can affect the metabolism of components of bone and cartilage, which is the basis for the development of pathological processes, but there are no biochemical markers of this process in the literature. Thus, currently, there is insufficient number of experimental scientific works devoted to the study of biochemical parameters characterizing the state of the connective tissue in the experiment to assess the impact of hypokinesia on the body, and this fact determines the relevance of the study. Aim. To study the dynamics of the main metabolites characterizing the state of the connective tissue in the blood serum in hypokinesia in rats of different ages. Materials and methods. The studies were performed on 42 white male rats aged 3 and 12 months, kept in the vivarium of the Sytenko Institute of Spine and Joint Pathology National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Kharkiv. The conditions of hypokinesia were reproduced using a specially designed device that limited the mobility of the animal without disturbing the ventilation of the body. Animals were removed from the experiment by decapitation in Day 7 and 30 of immobilization under thiopental anesthesia. The content of sialic acids in the serum was determined by the Hess method, chondroitin sulfate – by Nemeth-Csoka method modified by L. I. Slutsky, the fractional composition of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) – by the reaction with resoquine. Results and discussion. In the study of the rat serum, it was found that in intact animals of 3 and 12 months of age the content of sialic acids was different; it was 2.94 ± 0.16 and 1.98 ± 0.09 mmol/L, respectively. After 7 days of hypokinesia, their concentration in young animals did not change, but in older animals, this figure increased. By Day 30, the serum sialic acid levels suddenly increased compared to intact animals. In animals of 12 months of age, the concentration of sialic acids in the blood serum increased by both Day 7 and Day 30 of hypokinesia, especially at the end of the experiment. Hypokinesia also showed a significant increase in serum concentrations of chondroitin sulfates on Day 7 of the experiment in animals of both age groups. At the same time, the level of these metabolites on Day 30 was at the same level. In young rats on Day 7 the fraction of GAG remained unchanged, but on Day 30 there was a significant decrease. During this period, the second fraction of GAG increased. In animals aged 12 months on Day 7 and 30, the content of most GAG fractions was lower than the values characterizing the fractional composition of GAG in intact rats. Conclusions. Thus, the determination of sialic acids, GAG fractions and chondroitin sulfates in the serum can be presented as a set of biochemical tests to assess disorders of the connective tissue metabolism while limiting the motor activity of the body. It has been found that the 30-day hypokinesia causes significant disorders of the connective tissue, and it is reflected in changes in the biochemical parameters of the serum of experimental rats.

A new method of staining connective tissue fibres is described. The stain used is alcohol-soluble aniline blue (spirit blue), after oxidation with potassium permanganate. The method is rapid and easy in application. Liang's method for staining nerve-fibres is discussed briefly and its use in demonstrating the excretory system of Fasciola described.
