This paper presents a comparative study of the anti-oxidant and anti-microbial activities, total phenolic compounds and total flavonoids in extracts obtained from houseleek (Sempervivum marmoreum L.) leaves by the classical (maceration), ultrasonic and Soxhlet extraction (CE, UE and SE, respectively). The extract obtained by the CE contained higher amounts of phenolic and flavonoid compounds and showed a better antioxidant activity than those obtained using other two techniques. All the extracts, independent of the extraction technique applied, showed antimicrobial activities against Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans only but not against the tested bacteria.

The yield of extractive substances, antioxidant activity, as well as total phenolic and total flavonoid contents of aqueous-ethanolic extracts obtained from aerial parts of Galium mollugo L. by different extraction techniques (maceration, reflux and ultrasonic extraction) were reported. The antioxidant activity of extracts was tested by measuring their ability to scavenge a stable DPPH free radical, while the total phenolic and total flavonoid contents were determined according to the Folin-Ciocalteu procedure and a colorimetric method, respectively. The Duncan?s multiple range tests were used to evaluate if there were significant differences among yields of extractive substances, total phenolics, total flavonoids and EC50 values for the extracts obtained by different extraction techniques. The extracts obtained by the reflux extraction contained higher amounts of extractive substances, as well as phenolic and flavonoid compounds, and showed a better antioxidant activity than those obtained by the two other recovering techniques.

The present work was conducted in order to investigate the effect of auxin type (2,4-D and NAA) and concentration (0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 1.00 and 2.00 mg/l) on Balanites aegyptiaca callus cultures growth and production of secondary metabolites. Obtained results demonstrated that supplementation MS medium with 2,4-D at 2.0 mg/l could enhanced and recorded the ultimate values of callus fresh weight, antioxidant activity (%), total flavonoids, total phenolic compounds and total saponins contents and yields of Balanites aegyptiaca L. callus.

Paku atai plant (Angiopteris ferox Copel), specifically the tuber has been used empirically as an anticancer and antidote materials by Dayaknese in West Kutai, with limited scientific study. Thus, this research had been conducted to determine and evaluate the total phenolic, flavonoid content of this plant along with the antioxidant and toxicity profile. The research used several extracts’ solvents including extraction with ethanol (crude extract, CE) and subsequently partitioned with n-hexane (HF); ethyl acetate (EF) and ethanol aqueous (EAF). The resulted crude extract and fractions were then analyzed through colorimetric method to determine the phenolic and flavonoid total; with DPPH and FRAP to observe the antioxidant activity; and using BSLT method to evaluate the toxicity activity. The results showed that the EF fraction provided the strongest antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 13.79 μg/mL and iron reduction with FRAP value of 387.5±6.41 µM/g. However, a high correlation was observed between the antioxidant and the total phenolic content (r2 = 0.970 - 0.974) but little correlation in total flavonoid (r2 = 0.345 - 0.373). Furthermore, the EF (19.56±7.35) showed the highest toxicity activity followed by CE (22.42±2.10), HF (39.52±7.38), and EAF (41.75±5.10). Therefore, the paku atai tuber can be potentially developed as a natural antioxidant and anticancer material.

The aim of the study was to characterize antioxidative properties and antiradical activity of the herbal syrups collection in Latvia. Spectrophotometry was used to characterize antioxidant properties of herbal syrups. Antiradical activity, total phenols and content of flavonoids were determined spectrophotometrically. The antiradical scavenging activity was measured by the DPPH (2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) reaction. The herbal syrups antiradical scavenging activity was estimated by the amount of DPPH of reagent using in reaction with a sample of vegetable syrup (in percent) and by Trolox equivalent. The total phenolic compounds were determined by using the Folin – Ciocalteu method. The total phenolic content was expressed in mg of the gallic acid equivalents. The content of flavonoids was determined by using reaction between the AlCl3 and flavonoids. Antiradical scavenging activity by Trolox equivalent of the herbal syrups was found from 81 to be 130 mg 100 g-1 herbal syrups. The content of total phenols was found from 22 to be 282 mg GAE 100 g-1, but content of total flavonoids by quercetin equivalent was found from 1 to 44 mg QE 100 g-1. In case of increased disease problems, syrups with increased antioxidant content should be used. However, the specificity of each disease should be taken into account as well as the content of certain compounds in the plants.

Air dried powdered material of the fruits of cedrela toona Roxb. was successively extracted with petroleum ether, hexane, acetone, methanol and water extract by soxhlet extraction and subjected to various qualitative chemical tests to determine presence of various phytoconstituents like alkaloids, glycosides, carbohydrates, phenolics and tannins, phtosterols, fixed oils and fats, proteins, amino acids, flavonoids, saponins etc. Total flavonoids content was measured with the ‘Aluminium Chloride Colorimetric Assay Method’. Total Phenolic content in the aqueous and methanol extracts of fruits of Cedrela toona Roxb. were determined using the Folin Denis Method and expressed as mg of tannic acid equivalents per gram dry weight of extract. This study helps researchers for developmentof isolation method of active ingredient having vast pharmacological effects. Phyllanthus emblica contains rich vitamin C and polyphenol. In the present work, the potential anti oxidant polyphenols is produced from Phyllanthus emblica using soxhlet extraction process. For this purpose, 150 millimeter size of the phyllanthus emblica bark was collected and solvents such as ethanol, acetone and methanol is used for extracting polyphenols from the Phyllanthus emblica. The obtained extract is separated and total phenolic content is determined from the product. From the study it was observed that maximum yield of polyphenol obtained from 80 volume % of ethanol at a temperature of 70°C. The results will be useful in understanding this amla fruit, hence large scale production can be improved industrially.
