Abstract. A very diverse ostracod fauna was discovered in the latest Permian strata of the Dongpan section, southwestern Guangxi, South China. Fifty-one species belonging to twenty-eight genera were identified and described, including two new species (Bairdia dongpanensis n. sp. and Spinomicrocheilinella anterocompressa n. sp). This type of assemblage, with nineteen palaeopsychrospheric species and four pelagic species, is the first world-wide deep-water ostracod fauna reported from the latest Permian strata and the first one recorded in the Permian of China. The palaeoenvironmental analysis allows one to propose an evaluation of the bathymetry variation along the Dongpan section.

Four species ofLaonice(Annelida: Spionidae) were collected from the lower bathyal depths (3300–3700 m) in the Whittard Canyon, NE Atlantic. Two are herewith described as new species:Laonice whittardensissp. nov. andLaonice nataesp. nov. The other two areLaonice blakeiSikorski & Jirkov, 1988 andLaonice magnacristataMaciolek, 2000.Laonice whittardensishas genital pouches appearing from chaetiger 3, prostomium free of peristomium and bidentate hooks.Laonice nataebelongs to the subgenusAppelloefianov. with prostomium distinct from the peristomium, more than two vertical rows of capillaries in several anterior chaetigers, genital pouches present on a limited number of segments or totally absent. However, the absence of pronounced anterior widening of the body together with anterior branchiae, which are remarkably (nearly twice) longer than the notopodial postchaetal lobes, the narrow lanceolate notopodial postchaetal lobes, the pronounced pointedness of all postchaetal lobes (both notopodial and neuropodial) in the anterior half of body at least, and absence of genital pouches and the size of the body all distinguishL. nataefrom other species belonging to this subgenus. An identification key to all nine known deep-water (>400 m depth)Laonicespecies in North Atlantic is given and four previously recognized sub-generic groups are formally named:Laonice, Sarsianasubgen. nov.,Appelloefiasubgen. nov.,Norgensiasubgen. nov.

Two new deep-water mysids from the subfamily Petalophthalminae (Crustacea: Mysida: Petalophthalmidae) are described from specimens collected from Challenger Plateau, Chatham Rise, and off the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. These new species raise the number of species of both genera to five. Petalophthalmus lobatus sp. nov. differs from its congeners by the structure of an elongated ventilation lobe on the seventh oostegites, laterally flattened eyes, and the armature of the telson. Ipirophthalmus crusulus sp. nov. can easily be distinguished by the rudimentary sixth to eighth thoracic endopods. Both species were found to be the prey of several fishes, including commercially caught species, providing insight into their ecology. An identification key to the subfamily is provided.

Two new species of deep-water xanthid crabs, Euryxanthops chiltoni, new species, and Medaeops serenei, new species, are described from the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand. This is the first time these genera are reported from New Zealand. Keys for the identification of all species of Euryxanthops and Medaeops are provided. The two new species bring the total number of species of xanthids from the Kermadec Is. to 17, and the known species of Euryxanthops and Medaeops to five and six respectively;. Although caught in the vicinity of hydrothermal vents, there is no evidence that these species are directly dependent upon the vent community.

Three new genera and five new species of epialtid majoid crabs are described from deep water in the western Pacific. Two new species of Oxypleurodon Miers, 1886: O. sanctaeclausi n. sp. and O. annulatum n. sp. are described from the Philippines. New specimens of the rare Oxypleurodon carbunculum (Rathbun, 1906) from the Hawaiian Islands are also recorded. Three new genera are established: Garthinia n. gen. for G. disica n. sp. from the Solomon Islands; Guinotinia n. gen. for G. cordis n. sp. from New Caledonia and G. lehouarnoi n. sp. from Fiji and Tonga; and Laubierinia n. gen. for Sphenocarcinus nodosus Rathbun, 1916, and Rochinia carinata Griffin & Tranter, 1986.

Two new species of the deep-water spider crab genus Pleistacantha Miers, 1879, are described: P. griffini sp. nov. and P. maxima sp. nov. Pleistacantha griffini, from northwestern Australia and Indonesia, most closely resembles P. moseleyi (Miers, 1886), with which it has been confused. Pleistacantha griffini is readily distinguished from P. moseleyi based on carapace physiognomy, pereopod morphometrics and gonopod structure. Pleistacantha maxima, ranging from Japan to Australia, has been previously confused with the morphologically similar P. oryx Ortmann, 1893. The new species differs from P. oryx in numerous features, the most striking being a maximum body size exceeding twice that of P. oryx.

Two new species of fauveliopsid annelids, Fauveliopsis antri sp. nov. and Laubieriopsis soyoae sp. nov., are described based on specimens collected from Japanese waters. Fauveliopsis antri sp. nov. inhabits submarine caves and can be discriminated from the other congeners by the following features: i) 32 chaetigers, ii) chaetigers 1–3 with stout hooks, iii) minute body (about 1 mm in length), iv) all parapodia with same number of chaetae (2 notochaetae; 2 neurochaetae), and v) presence of dorsal and ventral papillae. Laubieriopsis soyoae sp. nov. inhabits deep water sediments and can be distinguished from the other congeners by: i) 24 chaetigers, ii) chaetigers 1–3 without annulations, and iii) acicular chaetae with tips entire, without denticles.
