The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) recently ratified a new health and safety standard requiring schools of music to inform students about health concerns related to music. While organizations such as the Performing Arts Medicine Association have developed advisories, the exact implementation is the prerogative of the institution. One possible approach is to embed health education activities into existing methods courses that are routinely offered to music education majors. This may influence student awareness, knowledge, and the perception of competency and responsibility for addressing health risks associated with learning and performing musical instruments. Unfortunately, there are no known lesson plans or curriculum guides for supporting such activities. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to (1) develop course objectives and content that can be applied to a preexisting brass methods course, (2) implement course objectives into a semester-long brass methods course, and (3) test the effectiveness of this intervention on students’ awareness, knowledge, perception of competency, and responsibly of health risks that are related to learning and performing brass instruments. Results showcase the potential for modifying methods courses without compromising the other objectives of the course. Additionally, students’ awareness, knowledge, perception of competency, and responsibility were positively influenced as measured by changes in pre to post responses to survey group questions.

As the diverse populations of the planet interact on a more frequent and intense basis, it becomes increasingly important for every individual and organization to examine its own approach to this vital issue. The field of performing arts medicine should pay particular attention to diversity for a number of reasons, some of which will help to advance our specialty and improve the lives of performing artists, while others may help save the world.

Purpose: Performing arts medicine has traditionally focused on the medical problems of classical musicians. Unfortunately, there is a paucity of data regarding differential incidence or prevalence of injury in nonclassical musicians. The present study analyzed the baseline prevalence, new onset of injury following a substantial increase in playing time at a music camp, and any possible correlation with technical and postural deficits in a population of amateur folk instrumentalists. Methods: Preliminary and follow-up questionnaires were used to gather background and new incidence data, respectively. A subset of subjects was recorded on video, which was independently analyzed for technical deficits at a later time. Results: Lifetime prevalence is 54% for a previous injury attributed to playing a musical instrument and point prevalence is 19%. Following the camp, prevalence increased to 44% (p = 0.001), and incidence of new injury was 31%, including individuals with more than one active injury. A higher rate of injury correlated with a greater increase in absolute playing time, relative playing time above baseline, and absolute time above baseline during the camp, although these did not reach statistical significance. The limited technical analysis qualitatively correlated a technical deficit to an injury at the same anatomical location in 15 of 47 cases using only a single-view video for analysis. Conclusion: Lifetime and point prevalence is similar to that reported in several studies of classical musicians. Further inquiry into technical and postural analysis may help to identify the cause of, and potentially prevent, overuse injuries in folk and classical musicians.

The purpose of this program evaluation was to examine the effectiveness of an educational course in health promotion and injury prevention designed specifically for college music majors. Course content included the provision of information on medical problems commonly seen in musicians, effective health promotion and preventive strategies, and application of this knowledge to music playing and other daily occupations. Students were taught how to assess risk for potential injury for themselves and their future students. Course content and self-assessment questionnaires aimed at assessing the students' use of health and injury prevention measures were administered before the start of the course, immediately after course completion, and 6 weeks later. The outcomes indicated that students improved in their overall knowledge of the content covered in this educational module and that this increased knowledge was retained 6 weeks later. Interestingly, self-perceived application of health promotion and injury prevention strategies did not improve significantly at the completion of the course but did so 6 weeks later, possibly indicating that behavior change takes longer to incorporate into one's daily routine. Literature suggests that such education programs have benefited performing artists, and these results indicate the efficacy of this type of educational program within an academic curriculum for student musicians. In addition, this program illustrates the role of the occupational therapist as a consultant and educator in the practice of performing arts medicine.

The book seeks to answer these questions: Why are there more than 150 gamelans (Indonesian percussion ensembles) in North America, and why are more than half of them associated with American colleges and universities? How and why did gamelan ensembles spark the ethnomusicological imagination? What impact have these ensembles had on college music programs, their local communities, and transnational Indonesian performing arts scenes? How does a lifetime of teaching foreign college students shape the lives of non-American music teachers? First providing an overview of gamelan and its incorporation in education in North America, this book uses the story of the career and community of one performer-teacher, I Made Lasmawan of Bali and Colorado, as a case study to examine the formation and sustenance academic world music ensembles. It examines the way students develop musical and cultural competence by learning gamelan in traditional ethnomusicology ensemble courses and analyzes the merits of including gamelan ensembles in studies in percussion, composition, and music education. More broadly, the book argues that beyond the classroom, the presence of these ensembles shapes transnational arts education and touristic performing arts scenes in Bali. Finally, it advocates for world music ensemble courses as a powerful means for teaching musical and cultural diversity and sparking transnational exchanges, both in and outside the classroom.

<p>Computer assisted and computer based applications become more and more important in everyday lives. Their implementation in the field of music education seems to become a long-term project. Whereas years ago we were sure about the fact, that the quality of e-learning at our University of Music and Performing Arts depends on the implementation of audio-visual media at our e-learning platform, nowadays the text based tasks and written journals have won the race at least in the statistic of usage. </p><p>Many modules containing multimedia based content promote creative processes and different learning situations. Advantages of e-learning include flexibility and convenience for learners, especially if they have more variety in learning experiences by using multimedia applications. This paper deals with the change of our user behaviors in the last years, discussion forums, blogs, wikis and collaborative online activities and focuses on tools for musicians, composers and music scientists based on the actual status of the discussions in media pedagogies. A scientific project including surveys about the advantages and disadvantages of digital teaching repositories describes common used online music tools. </p><div><span><strong><br /></strong></span></div>

There is no doubt that the field of performing arts medicine continues to grow at a rapid pace. While the consistently high rate of injuries reported by musicians and dancers internationally drives the need for better injury prevention and management strategies, the increasing research and clinical knowledge base provides a platform for further advancements.
