Weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) methods are especially efficient for numerically solving nonlinear hyperbolic equations. In order to achieve strong stability and large time-steps, strong stability preserving (SSP) integrating factor (IF) methods were designed in the literature, but the methods there were only for one-dimensional (1D) problems that have a stiff linear component and a non-stiff nonlinear component. In this paper, we extend WENO methods with large time-stepping SSP integrating factor Runge–Kutta time discretization to solve general nonlinear two-dimensional (2D) problems by a splitting method. How to evaluate the matrix exponential operator efficiently is a tremendous challenge when we apply IF temporal discretization for PDEs on high spatial dimensions. In this work, the matrix exponential computation is approximated through the Krylov subspace projection method. Numerical examples are shown to demonstrate the accuracy and large time-step size of the present method.

Mathematics is a human creation, which has been developing for more than four thousand years. It emerged as a response to different social and economic needs of civilizations. Historical development of mathematics stresses that mathematics as a science has always been connected to economic and social context and development of society. There is little or no research that promotes using historical content in mathematics lessons in the Nigeria context. In this paper, we model the use of history of mathematical thought (HMT) in mathematics instruction and solved the formulated model equation using integrating factor. The rate at which HMT is used by teachers in mathematics instruction is assumed to be proportional to the number of teachers that do not use HMT. The analysis suggests that with time, only a fraction of teachers can use HMT in teaching mathematics due to the fact that they will not remember to use it, and additional recruitment of teachers will result in only marginal improvement in the usage of HMT.

Abstract The paper analyzes the role of the national team of Spain denoted by the neologism La Roja in promoting patriotic sentiments and building national unity. In a 2014 study entitled Goles y banderas. Fútbol e identidades nacionales en España, Alejandro Quiroga Fernández de Soto argues that the successes of the team in 2008-2012 (Champions of Europe in Austria and Switzerland, World Champions in South Africa and again Champions of Europe in Poland and Ukraine), brought about a patriotic revival, while La Roja itself became an integrating factor which united the Spanish regardless of political differences and distinct identities. The assertion is highly debatable for two reasons: firstly, the resurgence of the national symbols was temporary and did not occur uniformly across the country, especially in Catalonia and the Basque Country; secondly, it would be more fitting to speak of journalistic patriotism rather than actual patriotic revival within the Spanish society. The paper critically assesses the patriotic discourse rooted in the successes of La Roja in 2008-2012. Their poor performance in the last major tournaments in 2014-2018 and absence of any particular euphoria surrounding the national team confirm that the wave of flags which swept the country in the successful period was not an expression of profound, patriotic renewal of national symbols. At most, it may be argued to have been a forced attempt to boost Spanish (centralist) nationalism in the face of the increasingly active peripheral nationalisms, especially its most radical, Catalan embodiment.

Because small changes in thermodynamic quantities will play a central role in much of the development of thermodynamics, the key concepts are introduced in this short chapter. The First Law (conservation of energy) can be expressed simply in terms of infinitesimal quantities: a small change in the energy of a system is equal to the heat added plus the work done on the system. The theories of statistical mechanics and thermodynamics deal with the same physical phenomena. Exact and inexact differentials are defined, along with the important concept of an integrating factor that relates them. The useful equation relating small changes in heat to corresponding changes in entropy is derived.

We find one-dimensional optimal systems of the Lie subalgebras of Noether symmetries associated with systems of geodesic equations. Further, we find invariants corresponding to each element of the derived optimal system. The derived invariants are shown to reduce systems of geodesic equations (nonlinear systems of quadratically semi-linear second-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs)) to nonlinear systems of first-order ODEs. The resulting systems are solved via known methods (e.g. separation of variables, integrating factor, etc.). In some cases, we provide exact solutions of these systems of geodesic equations.
